How procurement teams, EPC contractors, and plant engineers can pick the right grade, standard, and wall schedule — without over-specifying or under-buying.
Walk into any refinery, desalination plant, or LNG terminal, and the same conversation comes up: "Which stainless steel pipe should actually go on this line?" The wrong answer costs weeks of rework. The right answer comes down to three things — the standard you specify, the grade that matches the fluid, and the mill that can certify it.
At EZ Steel Industrial, we have been producing industrial pipe, fittings, and flanges out of Changsha since 1994. We ship over 480,000 tons a year to more than 60 countries, and we see the same procurement mistakes over and over. This guide is the shortlist of what actually matters when you source stainless pipe for an industrial project.
Most purchasing problems begin when a buyer asks for "316L pipe" without naming the standard. Two mills can both sell you 316L, but the test requirements, tolerances, and traceability can be worlds apart.
For austenitic stainless pipe in pressure and process service, the three standards you will see most often are:
If you do not know which standard to call out, ask two questions first: is the line a pressure line, and will it be welded in the field? Pressure plus field welding almost always means A312 with a 100% radiographic or hydrostatic test.
304 and 316L get the most attention, but industrial lines run the full spectrum. A short, honest selection table:
| Grade | Typical Service | Why It Works |
|---|---|---|
| TP304 / TP304H | General process water, food, dairy, low-pressure steam | Cost-effective austenitic with good formability and weldability |
| TP316L | Chemical, pharmaceutical, marine, chloride-bearing cooling water | Molybdenum boosts pitting and crevice corrosion resistance |
| TP321 / TP347 | High-temperature refinery and boiler service | Stabilized against intergranular corrosion at 400–800 °C |
| Duplex / Super duplex | Offshore, seawater, high-pressure process | Higher strength, better chloride stress-corrosion cracking resistance |
Rule of thumb from our mill floor
If chloride levels stay below 200 ppm and the temperature stays under 60 °C, 304 is usually the most economical pick. Push past either of those limits and you almost always end up in 316L territory. Above 80 °C with chlorides, look at duplex or super duplex.
A lot of buyers default to seamless because it feels safer. In reality, modern welded austenitic pipe made to A312 with full radiographic testing is fully qualified for the same service conditions. The honest split looks like this:
A pipe is only as good as the joint that holds it. Industrial buyers regularly under-spec the matching components and end up with a system that fails at the flange or the fitting. A complete industrial stainless package should include pipe fittings in matching grades — typically butt-weld for process, socket-weld for small-bore instrument, and threaded for low-pressure utility — paired with the correct pipe flanges, stud bolts, and gaskets.
For high-temperature or hydrogen sulfide service, look at ASTM A182 flanges and A193 B7/B8 stud bolts matched to soft or spiral-wound gaskets. For sanitary or pharmaceutical service, choose 316L fittings with a documented surface finish (Ra value) and a matching ASME BPE gasket.
Two shipments of "the same" stainless pipe can behave completely differently depending on how the steel was melted, annealed, and pickled. Before you place the order, ask your mill for:
At EZ Steel Industrial, every shipment leaves with a 3.1 certificate, full traceability from heat to bundle, and the option of independent inspection at our Changsha facility. We also hold ISO 9001, and we manufacture to API, EN, and ASME specifications.
Before you send the RFQ, run through this list. It will save you at least one round of revisions and a lot of emails:
If your project needs more than just pipe — if you also need fittings, flanges, and gaskets from the same mill and the same QA system — we can deliver a bundled package. Our eight product lines cover carbon steel pipe, stainless pipe, copper-nickel and nickel alloy tube, heat efficiency tubes (U-bend and finned), fittings, flanges, gaskets and stud bolts, and industrial valves. We currently supply the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, the West-East Gas Pipeline, petrochemical plants, marine yards, and steam power stations across Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and the Americas.
