Most articles on stainless steel piping stop at building water supply. Here is what EPC contractors, refineries, and shipyards actually need to know when they specify stainless steel pipe for pressure service, structural work, and fluid transport.
If you have ever searched for a guide on stainless steel pipe, you will find dozens of articles comparing 304 and 316L grades for drinking water lines, press-fit systems, and residential plumbing. That coverage is useful, but it leaves industrial buyers under-served.
A petroleum refinery, a chemical plant, a steam power station, or a shipyard has a very different specification sheet. Engineers are not only choosing between 304 and 316L; they are also weighing ASTM A312 versus A269, A213 versus A249, JIS G3463 versus EN 10216-5, and how the chosen pipe interfaces with pipe fittings, flanges, gaskets, and valves in a complete piping package.
At EZ Steel Industrial, we have supplied industrial stainless steel pipe for more than three decades, working on projects such as the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, the West-East Gas Pipeline Project, petrochemical plant piping, and marine vessel systems. This guide is written from that project experience.
The standard 304 versus 316L debate is well documented, so we will keep it short. The real industrial question is broader: which austenitic, ferritic, or duplex grade is best matched to your fluid chemistry, temperature, and chloride exposure?
Specifying the wrong grade is one of the most expensive mistakes in pipe procurement. A 304 line in a 600 ppm chloride cooling circuit will pit within months, while a 316L line in a clean steam service is wasted budget. Always anchor grade selection to fluid chemistry and temperature, not to general reputation.
Industrial buyers do not buy "stainless steel pipe" in the abstract. They buy pipe made to a specific standard, with defined test, inspection, and certification requirements. Knowing the standard landscape is half the battle.
| Standard | Typical Use | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| ASTM A312 / A312M | Seamless, welded, heavily cold-worked austenitic pipe for high-temp and corrosive service | Most widely cited for general process piping |
| ASTM A213 / A213M | Seamless ferritic and austenitic boiler, superheater, and heat-exchanger tubes | Required for fired-heater and boiler service |
| ASTM A249 / A249M | Welded austenitic tubes for boilers, superheaters, condensers | Solution-annealed condition mandatory |
| ASTM A269 / A269M | Seamless and welded austenitic tubing for general low- and high-temperature service | Common for instrumentation and process lines |
| EN 10216-5 | Seamless stainless tubes for pressure purposes | European pressure-equipment directive compliance |
| JIS G3463 | Boiler and heat-exchanger tubes, STB and STBA grades | Standard reference in Asia-Pacific EPC projects |
| GOST 9940 / 9941 | Seamless stainless tubes for general and corrosion-resistant service | Commonly requested for CIS-region shipments |
A responsible supplier will quote the standard explicitly on the mill test certificate. If the MTC only says "stainless steel pipe" without a standard reference, treat that as a red flag.
Industrial stainless pipe typically falls into three families. Procurement, inspection, and welding procedures are different for each, so it pays to keep them separate from the very first inquiry.
Used in boilers, superheaters, reheaters, condensers, and process heat exchangers. The dominant standards here are ASTM A213 for seamless tubes and ASTM A249 for welded tubes, with EN 10216-5 and JIS G3463 as regional equivalents. These tubes must meet tight dimensional tolerances, full NDT coverage (eddy current, ultrasonic, or hydrostatic), and specific mechanical properties at design temperature.
Process and utility piping for refineries, chemical plants, and offshore platforms. ASTM A312 is the default choice for austenitic stainless lines carrying hydrocarbons, chemicals, or treated water. For larger diameters and thicker walls, you will also see EN 10217-7 for welded or EN 10216-5 for seamless. Project specs typically require a full traceability trail from heat number to finished pipe.
Architectural, mechanical, and load-bearing applications such as handrails, supports, framework, and equipment skids. EN 10296-2 and ASTM A554 are the most commonly referenced standards here. Tolerance, surface finish, and straightness matter more than high-temperature strength, but the corrosion-resistant surface is still a key selling point.
A practical tip: if your project spans all three families, ask your supplier to deliver each family on separate MTC sets. Mixing pressure-tube and structural-tube paperwork is the most common reason a third-party inspector flags documentation as non-conforming.
In real EPC projects, pipe is rarely the only item on the bill of materials. A typical package includes the pipe itself, matching pipe fittings in butt-weld, socket-weld, or threaded form, pipe flanges, gaskets, stud bolts, and industrial valves.
Sourcing each item from a different vendor creates three problems: mismatched delivery schedules, mismatched material certificates, and finger-pointing when a weld interface fails. The cleanest projects we have shipped have been the ones where a single mill supplies the pipe and the complementary components, all on a coordinated inspection and release plan.
EZ Steel Industrial operates as that single point of accountability. Our eight product lines — carbon and carbon alloy steel, stainless steel, copper and nickel alloy, heat efficiency tubes, pipe fittings, pipe flanges, gaskets and stud bolts, and industrial valves — are produced or sourced through the same quality system and the same ISO 9001-certified laboratory. This is what "full-cycle manufacturing expertise" and "project-centric bundled solutions" mean in our customer agreements: one PO, one quality file, one delivery window.
A trustworthy MTC is not just a piece of paper. For EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 inspection documents, you should be able to read the following information directly from the certificate and verify it against the marking on the pipe:
If your project is in oil and gas, power, or nuclear, you will also want to confirm that the mill is approved under the relevant schemes — API, ASME, EN, RCC-M, or AWS — and that the welders and procedures are certified to the right ASME or EN ISO 15614 qualifications. EZ Steel Industrial ships against API, EN, and ASME specifications, with AWS-qualified welding as standard.
Industrial pipe pricing is driven by three factors: raw-material surcharges, manufacturing capacity, and inventory carrying cost. A mill that holds strategic inventory of common grades and sizes — for example, ASTM A312 TP304 / TP316L in Sch 10S, 40S, and 80S — can typically deliver in days rather than months, and that speed translates directly into shorter project schedules.
When evaluating supplier proposals, look beyond the per-tonne price. A cheaper quote from a mill with no stock, no in-house NDT, and no export documentation experience often costs more once you factor in expediting fees, third-party inspection charges, and the risk of delayed shipments. The 480,000-tonne annual capacity and project-proven inventory model that EZ Steel Industrial runs is designed to compress those hidden costs.
Before you issue the next stainless steel pipe purchase order, run through this short list:
A clean answer to all five questions is usually the difference between a piping package that arrives on schedule and one that does not.
