A field-tested sourcing perspective from EZ Steel Industrial for engineers, EPC contractors, and procurement teams specifying stainless steel pipe for process plants, marine systems, and structural applications.
Most stainless steel pipe problems that show up at site were not caused by a wrong grade. They were caused by a right grade that arrived with a damaged surface, an incomplete MTR, or the wrong standard behind it. The pipe on the spool looks identical to the one on the drawing; the difference is invisible until the line goes into service and crevice corrosion, chloride pitting, or weld-side cracking starts eating into the bundle.
EZ Steel Industrial has been supplying stainless steel pipe from its Changsha, Hunan facility since 1994, with over 480,000 tonnes of annual capacity serving petrochemical, power, marine, food-grade, and structural applications worldwide. This field note walks through what actually drives premature failure in stainless pipe — and how procurement decisions on surface condition, standard coverage, and traceability close the gap long before the line is hydrostatically tested.
Stainless steel depends on a thin, self-healing passive oxide layer for its corrosion resistance. Once that layer is contaminated, mechanically damaged, or chemically attacked, the underlying alloy is just another carbon-bearing metal. Industry literature is clear on the three contamination vectors that shorten the life of stainless pipe in service:
None of these failure modes show up on a tensile test, a hydrotest, or even a PMI gun reading. They show up because the surface the MTR describes and the surface that arrives on the pipe rack are not the same surface. Closing that gap is where procurement, not metallurgy, makes the decision.
"Stainless pipe" is a category, not a specification. Behind it sit ASTM A312 for seamless and welded austenitic pipe, ASTM A358 for electric-fusion-welded pipe in high-temperature service, ASTM A269 for general low- and high-temperature service, ASTM A249 for welded boiler and heat-exchanger tubes, EN 10216-5 for seamless pressure stainless tubes, JIS G3463 for boiler and heat-exchanger grades, GB/T 13296 for boiler and heat-exchanger stainless, and GOST 9941 for heat- and corrosion-resistant seamless tube. Each one covers a different envelope of size, grade, and inspection regime.
Sourcing against the wrong standard is one of the most expensive mistakes in stainless pipe procurement, because the difference often only shows up at inspection. A 304/304L pipe ordered to A312 is not the same product as the same nominal size in 304/304L ordered to A269 — the A312 version carries the dimensional and mechanical envelope for high-temperature and general corrosive service, while A269 is tighter on surface and dimensional tolerance for general service. The two cannot be interchanged on a hydrocracker reactor feed line without a re-spec.
Standard crosswalk — picking the right envelope
For high-temperature and general corrosive process service, anchor on ASTM A312 (austenitic) or A358 (EFW large-diameter). For heat-exchanger and condenser tube service, switch to ASTM A249 (welded) or ASTM A213 (seamless) on the tube side, and reserve EN 10216-5 for European-spec pressure service. JIS G3463 and GB/T 13296 cover the Asian boiler and heat-exchanger space; GOST 9941 is the standard of choice for legacy CIS and Russian-project seamless tube.
A mill finish on stainless pipe is not a passive characteristic — it is an active corrosion control. Procurement language that does not specify the surface condition leaves the door open for delivery of pickled-and-passivated, mill-polished, or as-rolled finishes interchangeably, and each of those has a different service life in the field. In our shop at EZ Steel Industrial, every stainless steel pipe shipment is reviewed against the surface envelope written into the PO before it leaves the loading bay.
Three rules keep the surface integrity intact from mill to site. First, dedicate tooling and lifting gear to stainless work. Second, package the bundle in plastic sleeves or protective wrap from the moment it leaves the mill until the moment it goes into the weld prep area — never store stainless pipe directly on carbon steel racks. Third, require post-weld pickling and passivation on every welded joint, with documented procedure and inspection. These three rules cost very little; skipping any of them is the most common root cause we see in premature failure analysis.
Grade selection is not a brand-loyalty exercise; it is a chloride, temperature, and stress decision. EZ Steel Industrial ships the full austenitic family — TP304, TP304H, TP304L, TP316, TP316L, TP316H, TP321, TP321H, TP347, TP347H — and the ferritic / duplex family on request. The mapping below reflects how we typically recommend grades to EPC clients:
| Service environment | Preferred grade | Standard envelope | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| General process piping, water, low-temperature service | TP304 / TP304L | ASTM A312, A269 | Cost-effective austenitic; good corrosion resistance in neutral and mildly oxidising media. |
| Boiler, superheater, high-temperature creep service | TP304H, TP316H, TP321H, TP347H | ASTM A312, A249, JIS G3463, GB/T 13296 | Higher carbon / stabilised grades resist sensitisation and creep at sustained 500–650°C operation. |
| Chloride-bearing, marine, or chemical process | TP316 / TP316L | ASTM A312, A249, EN 10216-5 | 2–3% molybdenum improves pitting and crevice resistance in chloride-rich media. |
| Sanitary, pharmaceutical, food-grade | TP304L / TP316L | ASTM A270, A249 | Low-carbon grades minimise carbide precipitation; surface finish controlled to sanitary requirement. |
| High-temperature chemical, nitric / acid service | TP321 / TP347 | ASTM A312, A249 | Titanium / niobium stabilisation prevents intergranular corrosion after welding or extended heat exposure. |
| Severe chloride, seawater, sour service | Duplex / super-duplex | ASTM A789, A790 | Higher pitting resistance equivalent (PREN) than 316L; specified where 316L is no longer adequate. |
Within a project, the same service envelope frequently needs stainless pipe plus the matching pipe fittings, the matching pipe flanges, and the gasket, stud bolt, and nut set. Sourcing these from different vendors tends to deliver components that look compatible on a drawing but were manufactured to different inspection regimes. The mismatch almost always surfaces as a joint leak during the first thermal cycle.
A stainless pipe MTC is a corrosion-prevention document, not a paperwork document. It should carry the heat number, the steelmaker, the chemical composition with exact Cr / Ni / Mo / C values, the mechanical test results, the heat treatment condition (solution annealed for austenitic grades), the NDT regime applied, and the pickling / passivation status of the as-shipped surface. If any one of these is missing, the receiving inspector is being asked to trust the surface life of the bundle on faith.
At EZ Steel Industrial, every stainless steel pipe order ships with a Mill Test Certificate to EN 10204 3.1, with full chemical and mechanical results traceable back to the heat. The 3.1 certificate identifies the manufacturing facility, the heat number, the inspection body, and the actual results — not a generic compliance statement. For pressure-service and nuclear-adjacent projects, 3.2 certification with independent third-party witness is available on request.
Receiving-inspection note
Before signing for a stainless pipe delivery, run three checks: confirm the heat number on every pipe matches the MTC, perform a PMI (positive material identification) reading on a sample of pipes, and visually inspect the protective wrap for tears, water staining, or carbon-steel contact marks. A single torn sleeve on a chloride-bound site is enough to put a bundle into quarantine.
On a real project, the stainless pipe spool does not arrive alone. The procurement team typically also needs matching pipe fittings (butt-weld elbows, tees, reducers), the matching pipe flanges in the same material, the correct gasket and stud-bolt grade, and the isolation industrial valves for the line. Sourcing each line item from a separate vendor turns the MTR trail into a paper chase and leaves the EPC contractor reconciling half a dozen certificate formats at site.
EZ Steel Industrial runs a project-centric bundled model. A single PO covers the stainless pipe, the matching fittings and flanges, the gaskets and stud bolts, and the required industrial valves — all on a unified MTR trail that goes back to one heat per material lot. Our engineering team supports the specification from the front end: reviewing the data sheet, recommending the grade and standard envelope, matching the bundle to ASME, EN, GOST, JIS, or GB/T as the project requires, and aligning inspection and test plans to the project's quality requirements. The 480,000-tonne annual capacity, the ISO 9001-certified laboratory, and the API / EN / ASME-compliant material sourcing sit underneath that workflow.
EZ Steel Industrial stainless pipe is in service across the West-East Gas Pipeline network, the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, petrochemical plant reactor feed and overhead systems, food and pharmaceutical sanitary lines, marine and offshore seawater systems, and a string of high-purity process installations in the power and steel sectors. The pattern is consistent: the projects that hit their reliability targets are the ones that locked the stainless pipe specification — grade, standard, surface condition, and traceability — at the procurement stage, not at the failure-analysis stage.
Send us your data sheet — fluid service, temperatures, pressures, chloride and H2S exposure, applicable standard, and connection type — and we will return a recommended grade and standard envelope, a surface-condition spec, and a bundled quote covering the stainless steel pipe, the matching pipe fittings and pipe flanges, the gasket, stud bolt, and nut set, and any industrial valves required. One PO, one MTR trail, one delivery to site. Contact our export team at export@ezsteelpipe.com or call +86 731 8870 6116 to start the conversation.
