For most procurement engineers, the phrase "stainless steel pipe" quietly collapses into a single mental image: an ASTM A312 TP304/316 seamless tube, picked by schedule, ordered by the meter. In real projects that image breaks down fast. A condensate line in a refinery, a sanitary loop in a brewery, a ballast cooling pipe on a chemical tanker, and a superheater outlet in a power plant all share the same material family, yet they call for completely different specifications, testing, and joining accessories. Treating them as the same buy usually means re-orders, field rework, or, worse, premature failure.
This walkthrough is written for project buyers who already know the basics and need a sharper way to map stainless steel pipe to the service environment they actually have. The goal is simple: specify once, order once, install once.
Grade is a result, not a starting point. Before you write "TP304" or "TP316L" on a requisition, lock down four things: the fluid chemistry, the peak operating temperature, the pressure class, and the cleanliness expectation. Each of these nudges the specification in a different direction.
Doing this exercise up front makes the rest of the procurement package almost mechanical.
Stainless pipe specifications are not interchangeable. A312 covers seamless, welded, and cold-worked austenitic pipe for general corrosive and high-temperature service. A213 covers seamless ferritic and austenitic tubes for boilers and heat exchangers. A249 covers welded austenitic tubes for the same duty. A269 covers general seamless and welded tubes for low- and medium-temperature service. A270 is the sanitary tubing standard. EN 10216-5, EN 10217-7, JIS G3459, and GB/T 14976 cover the same families in other regulatory regions.
| Service | Typical standard | Common grades |
|---|---|---|
| Process piping, general corrosive | ASTM A312 / EN 10217-7 | TP304, TP316L |
| Boiler & superheater tubes | ASTM A213 / EN 10216-5 | TP304H, TP316H, TP321 |
| Condenser & heat exchanger | ASTM A249 / A269 | TP304, TP316L |
| Sanitary / hygienic | ASTM A270 / EN 10357 | TP304L, TP316L |
| High-temp / power plant | ASTM A312 + ASME B36.19M | TP304H, TP316H |
Once the standard is right, the schedule question becomes much easier. ASME B36.19M governs stainless pipe dimensions; pick the schedule that handles the design pressure with margin, and stop over-specifying wall thickness out of habit.
A stainless line is a system, not a tube. The pipe, the pipe fittings, the pipe flanges, and the industrial valves must be specified as one metallurgical family. Mismatched families are the single most common source of galvanic and crevice problems on stainless systems. When you order a TP316L line, the elbows, tees, reducers, flanges, and valve bodies should all carry the same or a compatible grade, with matching ASTM/EN references and full MTC traceability.
Three details to keep on the requisition:
For a project buyer, an EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 mill test certificate is the cheapest insurance on the job. It links the heat number on every tube, fitting, and flange to a chemistry and a mechanical test result. When a third-party inspector flags a heat, you can isolate the lot in minutes instead of quarantining the whole shipment. For hygienic, nuclear, and offshore work, 3.2 certification with a named inspection body is usually mandatory — confirm before placing the order, not after.
Two practical tips from real project work:
Run the requisition through this list before sending it out. Items that survive a quick review almost never come back as field complaints.
EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL has been supplying industrial pipe, fittings, flanges, and valves since 1994 from its base in Changsha, China. Our team is used to working from a project specification, not a part number list. Send us your datasheet, your piping class, or even a rough line list, and we will come back with a consolidated offer covering stainless steel pipe, matching pipe fittings, pipe flanges, and industrial valves from one production plan and one MTC file.
