Most procurement guides treat stainless steel pipe as a commodity line item. In an oil & gas plant, a desalination skid, a brewery or a pharmaceutical clean utility loop, it is anything but. The grade, the standard, the surface finish and the matching fittings all sit inside one pressure boundary, and that boundary either holds for thirty years or fails at the first hydrostatic test. This walkthrough explains how EPC and maintenance teams can lock grade, schedule, end connection and the entire fitting stack into one bundle, so the pipe arrives on the same MTC, the same heat-number family and the same delivery window as everything it welds to.
A stainless line on a process skid is never a stand-alone purchase. The pipe butt-welds to pipe fittings, bolts to pipe flanges, sits inside an industrial valve body and rests on a gasket stud bolt nut set. Every one of those components has to share the same material family, the same corrosion allowance and the same MTC chain. Specifying the pipe on its own and then buying the rest of the joint from a different mill is how 304L weld necks show up next to 316L valve bodies, and how inspectors reject an entire skid because the heat numbers do not match.
That is why EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL has reorganised its supply around project bundles rather than single SKUs. A stainless steel pipe order ships with matching BW fittings, RF flanges, spiral-wound gaskets and the corresponding B8/B8M stud bolts, all cut from the same heat and covered by one traceability dossier. Procurement gets one PO, one MTC, one delivery window and one point of accountability.
The first document on the desk is the pipe standard, not the material price list. For austenitic stainless steel pipe in process service, three specifications cover the majority of industrial RFQs:
For pressure-tube service inside boilers and heat exchangers, the European equivalents EN 10216-5 (seamless) and EN 10217-7 (welded) carry 1.4301 / 1.4404 / 1.4571 designations that map cleanly to 304 / 316L / 316Ti. The standard fixes the test regime, the dimensional tolerance and the marking format; the trade name (304, 304L, 316, 316L, 321, 347, 904L) is a downstream consequence.
Field rule: write the standard on the data sheet first, then choose the UNS number
A line marked simply as “stainless pipe” invites the mill to ship whatever is on the rack. Marking it “ASTM A312 TP316L / SCH 40S / ASME B36.19M” forces the heat to match, the schedule to match and the test certs to match. The same discipline on the matching fittings is what keeps the inspector from rejecting the joint.
Reference articles on building water supply rightly distinguish 304 from 316L on chloride content. Industrial process piping adds a second axis: temperature, pressure and the chemistry of the process stream. The table below maps the common austenitic grades to the services they actually run in.
| UNS grade | Common name | Typical industrial service | Why it is chosen |
|---|---|---|---|
| S30400 / S30403 | 304 / 304L | Low-pressure water, HVAC, food and dairy lines, inland building services | Economical, good general corrosion resistance, easy to fabricate |
| S31600 / S31603 | 316 / 316L | Chemical processing, coastal seawater, pharmaceutical clean utilities, marine piping | 2–3 % Mo gives pitting resistance; L grade prevents carbide precipitation during welding |
| S32100 | 321 (stabilised) | Refinery hydrocracker, ethylene, high-temperature reactor piping | Ti stabilisation resists intergranular corrosion in the 427–816 °C sensitisation range |
| S34700 | 347 (stabilised) | Boiler superheaters, FCC catalyst lines, power-plant reheaters | Nb stabilisation, higher creep strength than 321 at sustained high temperature |
| N08904 | 904L | Sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid, high-chloride process streams | High Cr and Mo, resists strong reducing acids where 316L fails |
| S31803 / S32205 | 2205 duplex | Seawater systems, desalination, offshore process piping, FGD scrubbers | PREN ~35, roughly double the chloride resistance of 316L with higher strength |
The pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN = Cr + 3.3 Mo + 16 N) is the cleanest single metric to compare grades for chloride service. 304 sits around 18, 316L around 23–25, 2205 duplex around 35, and super-austenitics / super-duplex climb above 40. For offshore, FGD and seawater-cooled condenser service, a PREN below 25 is rarely accepted by EPC piping specs.
For the same nominal size and schedule, seamless and welded stainless pipe carry very different price tags and very different fitness-for-purpose profiles. The right choice depends on the service, not on mill preference.
Produced by hot extrusion, hot piercing or cold drawing, seamless stainless steel pipe has no longitudinal weld seam, which removes the heat-affected zone as a potential failure path. It is the default for high-pressure boiler tubes, refinery reactor piping, supercritical steam lines, instrument air and any service where the inspection regime calls for 100 % radiographic or ultrasonic examination of the parent pipe.
Modern welded pipe uses TIG, plasma or laser welding of cold-rolled strip, followed by online solution annealing and 100 % eddy-current or hydrostatic testing. For low- and medium-pressure process lines, sanitary and food-grade loops, structural service and architectural applications, welded pipe delivers equivalent corrosion performance at a substantial cost saving. The weld zone must be solution-annealed; cold-worked as-welded pipe is not acceptable for corrosive service.
Cold drawing after welding raises the yield strength, tightens the wall tolerance and improves the surface finish. Heavily cold-worked austenitic pipe is used in high-pressure instrument tubing, sub-sea umbilicals and HP / HT process lines where weight and wall thickness matter as much as corrosion resistance.
A stainless line is only as good as the components that terminate it. Once the pipe standard and grade are locked, the rest of the joint stack must be sized to the same ASME / EN pressure class and the same facing type. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL supplies the full bundle from one factory in order to keep heat numbers, MTCs and delivery windows consistent.
Field rule: a 150# flange on a 300# valve is the most common site failure
Pressure class, facing type and gasket style have to be specified as a set, not as three independent line items. A coordinated bundle from a single source removes the four most common joint-stack errors: 150# flanges next to 300# valve bodies, undersized stud bolts for the actual flange thickness, mixed-material MTCs on the same skid, and three different delivery windows for parts that have to install in one shift.
The inspection regime is what separates a commodity order from a project-quality order. For stainless steel pipe destined for process service, the minimum package is:
EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL's ISO 9001-certified laboratory issues all the above with the shipment, and supports third-party inspection by SGS, BV, TÜV or Lloyd's when the project calls for it.
If the stainless line feeds a boiler, condenser or waste-heat-recovery unit, the pipe specification tightens further. Heat efficiency tubes cover two specialist geometries that the standard stainless steel pipe catalogue does not:
The same bundled-sourcing logic applies: the heat-exchanger tube, the tube sheet, the header piping and the connecting flanges should arrive together, from the same mill, on the same MTC.
