A practical walkthrough of how to specify the right stainless steel pipe for high-temperature, corrosive, and sanitary service — from ASME B36.19 sizing to ASTM, EN, JIS, and GB/T grade cross-reference.
A buyer who only asks for "stainless pipe, 2 inch, schedule 40" usually gets a quote — and a surprise at the receiving dock. The mill test certificate says one standard, the marking on the pipe says another, and the actual chemical composition drifts between A312, A249, and EN 10216-5. Welds, cold work, and solution annealing each change the price line. And once the pipe is in service, swapping it for a different lot is rarely an option.
The good news is that the buying process becomes routine once you separate three decisions: which grade, which product standard, and which dimensional standard. The EZ Steel team has been walking buyers through these three decisions for industrial piping, marine, and power projects since 1994. This guide puts the same workflow on paper.
Grade is a metallurgy question, not a catalog question. Once the wrong grade is welded into a header, replacement cost dwarfs the original savings.
304 covers roughly 18% Cr, 8% Ni austenitic chemistry. 304L drops the carbon to 0.03% max specifically to suppress carbide precipitation during welding, which is the usual failure mode of straight 304 in welded service. Both are the right call for general-purpose water, low-temperature chemical, and food-contact service where chloride exposure is modest.
316 adds about 2–3% molybdenum, which is what makes the difference between "rust stain after a year" and "still clean at the ten-year inspection." 316L is the low-carbon twin for welded assemblies. Use 316L whenever the service involves seawater, brines, de-icing salts, bleach, or process chemicals that carry chloride traces.
For sustained service above 500 °C, stabilized grades such as TP321 or TP316Ti resist intergranular corrosion better than 304/316. Where you need both chloride resistance and roughly double the yield strength of 304, lean duplex 2205 (S31803/S32205) is the standard pick for seawater piping, FGD scrubbers, and offshore process lines.
Rule of thumb: Match the grade to the most aggressive expected condition, not the steady-state one. Downgrading from 316L to 304 to save 5% on the line item is one of the most common causes of mid-life pipe replacement in chemical and coastal installations.
"Stainless pipe" is a category, not a specification. The product standard tells the mill what testing, marking, and traceability you are buying. A trustworthy quote always names the standard in the MTC, not only on the purchase order.
| Standard | Form | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| ASTM A312 / A312M | Seamless, welded, cold-worked | High-temp and general corrosive service — the most common general industrial choice |
| ASTM A249 / A249M | Welded | Boilers, superheaters, condensers |
| ASTM A269 / A269M | Seamless and welded | Low- and mid-temp general service tubing |
| EN 10216-5 | Seamless | European pressure and heat service, 1.4301 to 1.4571 |
| EN 10312 | Welded | Stainless water transport tubes |
| JIS G3463 | Seamless and welded | Boiler and heat-exchanger tubes, STB / STBA grades |
| GOST 9940 / 9941 | Seamless | Heat- and corrosion-resistant service for CIS and Eurasian projects |
| GB/T 13296 | Seamless | Boilers and heat exchangers to Chinese standard |
| GB/T 14976 | Seamless | Fluid transport, water, oil, gas |
Most cross-border projects end up needing pipe from at least two of these standards. A mill-direct supplier that stocks and traces all of them side by side is far easier to audit than one that has to special-order half the spec. EZ Steel keeps this multi-standard inventory under one quality system so a single MTC line can be cross-checked against the equivalent ASTM, EN, JIS, and GB/T grade.
Stainless pipe dimensions are governed by ASME B36.19, with ASME B36.10 covering carbon and alloy steel. The two big practical differences are the schedule suffix and the wall thickness pattern.
A quick reference: a 2-inch NPS stainless pipe (OD 60.3 mm) measures 2.77 mm in 10S, 3.92 mm in 40S, and 5.54 mm in 80S. A 6-inch NPS pipe (OD 168.3 mm) jumps from 3.41 mm in 5S up to 10.98 mm in 80S — the higher the schedule, the more weight per metre, and the more attention you need to pay to handling and welding procedure qualification.
Most industrial RFQs fall into one of three buckets. Each has its own default standard and grade stack.
Boilers, superheaters, and high-temperature headers call for TP304H / TP316H per ASTM A213 for seamless tubes, or A312 for pipe. Solution-annealed condition and full NDT are the norm. If the design is on the European side, EN 10216-5 grade 1.4571 (316Ti) is a common equivalent.
Chemical, water-treatment, and process plants typically run A312 seamless or welded pipe in 304L or 316L. Where welded assemblies are heavy, the L-grade is mandatory to avoid sensitization. For water supply specifically, EN 10312 welded stainless is the cleanest European spec.
Dairy, beverage, and pharmaceutical lines need polished internal surfaces, controlled ferrite, and 316L throughout. Pick A270 or A249 sanitary tubing for the polished runs, then transition to A312 for the non-polished utility sections.
Industrial pipe never arrives alone. A serious project pulls together pipe, matching fittings, flanges, gaskets, stud bolts, and valves from a single coordinated supply chain so traceability, marking, and MTCs line up.
For process and utility lines, the natural bundle is stainless steel pipe joined with pipe fittings and pipe flanges of the same family. For high-pressure and high-temperature service, the same coordination extends into industrial valves and the matching gasket, stud bolt, and nut sets, so torque, gasket stress, and flange class are matched from the first drawing review.
Mill-direct procurement with one quality plan across all of these items is also how buyers avoid the most common cross-spec problem: a 316L pipe welded to a 304 fitting. Material mix-ups of that kind are not visible on the spool drawing; they show up in service.
EZ Steel Industrial has run stainless pipe orders under ASTM, EN, JIS, GOST, and GB/T since 1994. The mill-direct model keeps the chain short: stock program, MTC discipline, and a single quality plan across pipe, fittings, flanges, valves, and bolting. Whether the order is a five-tonne sanitary bundle for a beverage plant or a multi-standard pressure piping package for a refinery, the buying workflow is the same — and the documentation is built to survive an audit.
