A practical engineering walkthrough from EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL — choosing the right stainless steel pipe for pressure, fluid, structural and high-temperature service, and bundling it with the matching pipe fittings and pipe flanges your project actually needs.
Walk through any oil refinery, chemical plant, shipyard or boiler house and you will find the same quiet decision sitting at the back of every line drawing: which stainless pipe, in which grade, to which standard, supplied alongside which fittings. Get the package right and the project installs on schedule with predictable weld behavior and reliable inspection results. Get it wrong and you are stuck chasing replacement batches, fighting weld repairs, or worse, living with a corrosion failure for the next twenty years.
This guide distills what EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL has learned from supplying ezindustrialtube.com customers across the world since 1994. We work on projects as small as a single skid module and as large as the China West-East Gas Pipeline, so the recommendations below are field-tested rather than textbook-only.
Most selection mistakes begin with the wrong first question. Buyers ask "what schedule?" or "what wall thickness?" before they have answered the more important question: what fluid, what temperature, and what lifetime. Stainless pipe selection is dominated by corrosion environment, not pressure rating, because stainless steel earns its keep through chemistry — chromium content, molybdenum additions, and stabilizing elements — rather than raw wall thickness.
Map your project against four service families before looking at any catalog page:
Once the service family is fixed, the standard almost picks itself. ASTM A312 covers seamless and welded austenitic stainless pipe for high-temperature and general corrosive service. ASTM A213 is the standard for seamless ferritic and austenitic alloy steel boiler, superheater and heat-exchanger tubes. ASTM A269 handles seamless and welded austenitic stainless tubing for general low- and high-temperature service. ASTM A249 covers welded austenitic tubes for boilers, superheaters, heat exchangers and condensers.
Grade selection is where most procurement time gets burned. The 300-series austenitic family covers the vast majority of industrial applications, but there is no "default" grade. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL stocks the following grades on the floor and can mill custom orders for the more specialized alloys.
| Grade | Typical Use | Why It Is Chosen |
|---|---|---|
| TP304 / TP304H | General process piping, food equipment, structural | Baseline corrosion resistance and formability at the lowest cost |
| TP304L | Welded process systems, tanks | Lower carbon reduces intergranular corrosion after welding |
| TP316 / TP316L | Marine, chloride-bearing water, chemical | Molybdenum addition improves pitting and crevice resistance |
| TP321 | Boiler tubes, high-temperature process | Titanium stabilization prevents chromium carbide precipitation |
| TP347 / TP347H | Refinery, superheater service | Niobium stabilization for higher creep strength at 540–650 °C |
| Duplex 2205 | Offshore, chemical tankers, desalination | Higher strength plus excellent chloride stress-corrosion resistance |
Field rule from our project desk: if chloride concentration in the process fluid exceeds 200 ppm or operating temperature sits above 60 °C, default to 316L over 304L. The small price premium pays back many times over in leak prevention and longer inspection intervals.
The seamless-versus-welded question is engineering, not commercial. Welded stainless pipe has improved dramatically over the past two decades — modern TIG and plasma welding with 100 % radiography delivers weld zones that meet or exceed the parent metal in corrosion performance. That said, seamless still wins in three situations:
For the rest of the project — process lines, utility piping, structural tubing, low-pressure water and air service — welded pipe to ASTM A312 or ASTM A269 is the smarter buy. You save 20–40 % on raw material, shorten lead time, and your welding procedure qualification already covers the joints you will be making in the field.
The stainless steel pipe category at EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL is organized the same way the standards are: by the kind of service the pipe is doing. Each sub-category has its own documentation, test regime and typical buyer.
Pressure tubes are held to the tightest tolerances in our inventory. Wall thickness is verified to ±10 %, every tube is solution-annealed, and hydrostatic or eddy-current testing is the norm. Grades TP304H, TP316H, TP321 and TP347H are the workhorses, with ASTM A213 and EN 10216-5 being the most common standards. Our seamless high-pressure stainless process line and our GB/T 13296 boiler tube program are typical buys for power plant and refinery customers.
Pipeline grade stainless focuses on long-run, leak-tight fluid transport. The standard is ASTM A312, with GOST 9940, EN 10216-5 and GB/T 14976 used depending on geography. For water, oil, gas and chemical transfer, buyers usually pair the pipe with matching pipe fittings in the same standard and grade so that the entire line picks up a single mill test certificate. See the multi-standard stainless pipeline pipe range for a typical bundle.
Stainless structural tube is purchased for corrosion resistance and appearance rather than pressure. ASTM A554 is the dominant standard, with EN 10296-2 for European projects. Mechanical properties, surface finish (often polished or brushed) and dimensional consistency are what matters here. Our welded and seamless structural stainless tube line is widely used in architectural, marine and rail applications.
The single most common procurement mistake is buying pipe from one supplier and fittings from another. The pipe may meet ASTM A312, but if the elbows are from a different heat with different solution-anneal history, the corrosion cells form right at the joint. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL was built around the idea that industrial projects need pipe fittings, pipe flanges, gaskets, stud bolts and industrial valves that share the same metallurgical story as the pipe.
Our butt weld fittings are the default for high-pressure stainless lines because they produce a butt-welded joint with full penetration and no crevices. For smaller-diameter, high-pressure stainless systems our socket weld fittings provide a strong, vibration-resistant alternative. For instrumentation and low-pressure utility lines, threaded fittings remain a cost-effective option.
Procurement tip: request a single combined mill test certificate covering pipe, fittings and flanges. It collapses three quality records into one and dramatically simplifies the QA package at site reception.
The stainless steel pipe market is crowded with trading companies. What separates a real manufacturer from a broker is the ability to control chemistry, heat treatment, NDT and surface finish in-house. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL operates 500+ employees, 480,000 tons of annual capacity, and a full-cycle manufacturing chain: raw material inspection, hot and cold forming, solution annealing, pickling and passivation, hydrostatic and ultrasonic testing, and finished-goods packaging for export.
Our laboratory is ISO 9001 certified and our pipe, fittings and flanges carry API, EN and ASME third-party approvals. For projects requiring nuclear-grade traceability, our RCC-M II copper-nickel pipe line and our PWR nuclear material guide demonstrate the kind of documentation depth that nuclear and aerospace buyers require.
When a project RFQ lands on our desk, our engineering team walks it through the same five-step filter:
Running an RFQ through this filter before sending it out saves weeks of back-and-forth and produces bids that are genuinely comparable.
A few mistakes we see again and again, even from experienced procurement teams:
We are not a trading desk. We manufacture at scale and we stock at depth. Our stainless program is anchored by:
For projects on tight schedules we ship from floor stock in 1–2 weeks; for custom orders our typical lead time is 4–6 weeks. Our export team handles seaworthy packaging, customs paperwork and on-time dispatch from our facility in Changsha, China.
Stainless steel pipe selection is a system-level decision. The pipe, the fittings, the flanges and the gaskets have to tell the same metallurgical story, be documented against the same standard, and arrive at site in the same packaging batch. Working with a manufacturer who can deliver that bundle — and stand behind it with a single point of accountability — turns procurement from a sequence of phone calls into a clean, auditable supply chain.
If you are weighing grade options, comparing standards, or trying to consolidate multiple SKUs into a single shipment, our engineering desk is happy to walk through your project with you. Send your line list, design conditions and destination port and we will return a clean, fully-documented bid within five working days.
