Specifying the right stainless steel pipe can decide whether a project meets its design life, pressure rating, and corrosion targets. With dozens of ASTM, EN, JIS and GOST grades on the market, even experienced buyers struggle to match a pipe spec to the right service condition. This guide walks through what a specifier actually needs to lock in before issuing a purchase order, drawing on the inventory and mill experience of a long-standing Chinese manufacturer, EZ Steel Industrial.
Stainless steel pipe is the workhorse of any plant that handles corrosive fluids, high-purity media, or elevated temperatures. The chromium-rich passive film on its inner surface protects against pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking, while austenitic grades such as 304/304L and 316/316L keep their toughness down to cryogenic temperatures. That combination of corrosion resistance, mechanical stability and cleanability is why a stainless steel pipe is the default choice in chemical processing, food and beverage, pharmaceutical, marine, and power generation piping.
Outside of stainless, plants usually pair the stainless line with a carbon steel pipe network for utility water, firewater and low-temperature service, because the cost-per-ton gap is still significant. Knowing where each material belongs in the line list is the first step to a defensible specification.
The service envelope sets everything else. A 316L pipe carrying demineralised water at 80 °C is a different procurement than the same pipe handling wet chlorine at 180 °C. Map the design temperature, design pressure, and chloride / H₂S exposure first, then match a standard that has been qualified for that envelope. EZ Steel's stock covers the full spectrum from cryogenic LNG service (ASTM A312) to high-temperature reformer outlet (ASTM A213 TP304H/TP316H).
ASTM A312 is the default for general corrosive and high-temperature service, A269/A270 cover sanitary and instrumentation tubing, A213 governs boiler and superheater tubes, and EN 10216-5 covers seamless pressure stainless in the European market. For each standard, the grade selection (304, 304L, 316, 316L, 321, 347, duplex S32205) changes the weldability and corrosion profile. A reliable stainless steel pipe supplier should be able to cross-reference JIS, GOST and GB/T equivalents on request.
Seamless pipe is preferred for high-pressure, high-temperature and cyclic service. Welded pipe (A312 in welded or welded-and-drawn condition) is acceptable for lower-pressure lines and gives better surface finish and dimensional consistency. Cold-worked pipe is used when tighter ovality and higher strength are required. Confirm the delivery condition on the MTR, not just on the brochure.
Power, oil and gas and nuclear projects usually require EN 10204 3.2 certification, 100 % hydrostatic testing, ultrasonic or eddy-current NDT, PMI verification, and full traceability back to the heat number. Make sure the mill can deliver these documents as part of the standard shipment rather than as a costly add-on.
| Grade | Typical Standard | Best-Suited Service |
|---|---|---|
| TP304 / 304L | ASTM A312, A213, A249 | General corrosive service, food & beverage, low-temperature piping |
| TP316 / 316L | ASTM A312, A213, EN 10216-5 | Chloride-bearing media, marine, pharmaceutical, chemical process |
| TP321 / TP347 | ASTM A312, A213 | High-temperature service with welded joints, refinery furnace tubes |
| TP304H / TP316H | ASTM A213 | Boiler superheaters, power plant reheaters above 600 °C |
| Duplex S32205 / S31803 | ASTM A789, A790 | Seawater handling, high-chloride environments, offshore piping |
| 904L (N08904) | ASTM B677 | Sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid service |
Pipe is ordered by nominal pipe size (NPS) and schedule (SCH), with dimensional limits set by ASME B36.10M for carbon/alloy and B36.19M for stainless. Outer-diameter tolerance for seamless stainless is typically ±0.5 % with wall-thickness tolerance of ±12.5 %. Standard stock length is 6 m; fixed lengths of 9 m or 12 m can be arranged for spool prefabrication.
The theoretical mass of a stainless pipe (kg/m) is calculated as W = 0.02491 × T × (D − T), where T is wall thickness in mm and D is outside diameter in mm, based on a density of 7.93 g/cm³ for austenitic stainless. Specifiers should request a mill weight table on the MTR and cross-check against ASME B36.19M for the ordered schedule, because the ±12.5 % wall-tolerance band alone can move a freight calculation by several percent.
A pipe on its own does not make a piping system. Every line terminates in elbows, tees, reducers, and flanges, and every joint needs the correct gasket and bolting. A single mismatch on the flange facing (RF vs RTJ) or the stud bolt material can scrap an entire spool. Bundling the pipe with the matching pipe fittings and pipe flanges from one supplier is the most reliable way to keep the line list consistent.
Project-ready bundle: A full-cycle pipe package typically includes pressure tubes, structural pipe, fittings (BW / SW / threaded), flanges (carbon steel, stainless or alloy), stud bolts and gaskets, plus industrial valves for isolation. Ordering these as a single package from one mill reduces documentation overhead, MTR mismatches and shipping windows.
EZ Steel Industrial has been producing and exporting industrial pipe, fittings, flanges and valves since 1994, with an annual capacity above 480,000 tons and a workforce of more than 500 specialists. The Changsha-based facility is API, EN and ASME certified, runs an ISO 9001-accredited laboratory, and holds ASME and AWS welding qualifications, which is the combination buyers look for when they need to clear pre-shipment inspections on tight programmes.
The catalogue is organised around the way projects are actually executed: carbon steel pipe for utility and structural service, stainless steel pipe for corrosive and high-purity service, copper-nickel alloy for marine and offshore, and a complete pipe fittings and pipe flanges range to close the system. The bundled-sourcing model lets a procurement team issue one PO and one set of MTRs for an entire pressure-boundary package.
Send your line list, the relevant standards (ASTM / EN / JIS / GOST / GB/T), the quantity and the destination port, and EZ Steel Industrial's engineering team will return a documented quotation with grade cross-references, MTR samples and lead time. For projects that need a pressure-boundary bundle, the team can pre-package pipe, fittings, flanges, gaskets and stud bolts into a single shipment.
