Drafted for B2B sourcing engineers, EPC procurement, and refinery / power / marine / food-and-pharma buyers. Reference: ASTM, EN, GB/T, ASME, NACE MR0175, EN 10204.
Search any sourcing portal and "stainless steel pipe" returns thousands of listings. In practice, the same nominal diameter — say NPS 4 / DN100 — can mean six different products depending on what you actually need:
A single grade — say 304 — is not interchangeable across these. The mill test certificate (MTC to EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2) and the NDT regime (eddy current, hydrostatic, ultrasonic, PMI) follow the standard, not the chemistry alone. The most common purchasing error is to buy an A312 process pipe and try to use it as an A213 boiler tube. The chemistry looks similar; the creep data, solution-anneal condition, and NDT are not. That is why a 2026 buyer's guide starts with the standard, not the grade.
This is also why sourcing from a mill-direct manufacturer matters. A trading house that buys from three different mills can give you a price, but it cannot give you a single, traceable heat number, a single QMS (ISO 9001, API Q1, ASME QSC), and a single EN 10204 3.1 certificate for the whole batch. EZ Steel Industrial runs an integrated stainless steel pipe programme that covers all six service families above out of one facility in Changsha, China, founded 1994, with 480,000+ t/yr capacity and 500+ technical staff.
For the vast majority of B2B inquiries, the spec reduces to one of these. Anything else is either an outdated regional standard or a niche application.
| Standard | Typical service | Form | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| ASTM A312 / A312M | Austenitic process pipe, high-temp, corrosive | Seamless, welded, cold-worked | The default for chemical, refinery, food, water, structural-fluid service. Covers TP304/304L/304H, 316/316L/316H, 321, 347, 309, 310 and duplex/super-duplex. |
| ASTM A213 / A213M | Boiler, superheater, heat-exchanger tube (small OD) | Seamless | The right standard for ferritic-austenitic tube in power and process fired heaters. Includes the TP304H / TP321H / TP347H family plus T5/T9/T11/T12/T22/T91/T92 for creep-resistant service. |
| ASTM A269 / A269M | General low-/medium-temp seamless & welded austenitic | Seamless & welded | The "any-tube" standard — used when the service is general corrosion rather than pressure or high temp. Often called out for instrumentation, sample lines, and utility. |
| EN 10216-5 | European pressure-purpose seamless stainless | Seamless | The EN equivalent of A312 for pressure. Grades 1.4301 (304), 1.4401/1.4404 (316/316L), 1.4571 (316Ti) — what EU refineries and EPCs ask for. |
| GB/T 14976 | Chinese standard for fluid-transport stainless pipe | Seamless & welded | The PRC domestic equivalent; widely used in Chinese water, chemical, and HVAC projects. EZ Steel mills to GB/T 14976 in addition to the international standards above. |
Two points worth highlighting:
In our experience at EZ Steel Industrial, ~90% of inquiries can be served by four grades. The remaining 10% is where 90% of the cost and lead-time pain lives.
Add 2–3% Mo and you get meaningful resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion. The 316 family is the right answer for:
316L (0.03% C max) is the field-weldable version. EZ Steel stocks and mills stainless steel pipe to ASTM A312 TP316 / 316L, A213 TP316 / 316L, A269 TP316 / 316L, and the EN equivalents.
These are the "10%" grades — and they are where a mill-direct source earns its keep:
For each of these, the mill must demonstrate solution-anneal temperature control, ferrite balance (duplex 30–70% ferrite per ASTM A923), and PMI on every heat. EZ Steel delivers the full 904L / 2205 / 2507 range with full ASTM A923 and NACE MR0175 documentation.
A clean A312 inquiry should look like this, in this order:
Most RFQs we receive in 2026 only contain items 1, 2, 3 and 5. That is fine for a budgetary quote. For a PO-ready quote, the missing items 6–11 are where the mill-direct advantage of EZ Steel becomes visible — the price gap between a "shopping-cart quote" and a real PO-ready quote is usually the cost of the mill adding items 6–11 to its work order.
When you receive goods, do not just look at the MTC. The five inspection tests that catch the most real-world defects are:
EZ Steel's lab runs all five in-house (ISO 9001 accredited), which is one of the reasons we ship mill-direct from Changsha with the documentation a refinery, EPC, or shipyard actually needs to release material to site.
The gap between an EZ Steel mill-direct price and the same material sold by a domestic stocking distributor is typically 15–30% on FOB-China basis. That gap is real, but it is not free. To capture it without burning the order, follow this sequence:
Use the 11-item checklist in Section 4. The cleaner the spec, the faster and more accurate the mill quote.
For a first-time order, ask for a proforma sample of 2 tubes of each grade/size — with MTC, PMI, and dimensional report. Pay for these; the ~$200 cost is the cheapest insurance you will buy on the order.
For orders above ~$50K, engage SGS, Bureau Veritas, TÜV, or CCIC for a pre-shipment inspection (PSI). The inspector witnesses hydrostatic, ET, dimensional, PMI on a sampled lot, and photographs the MTCs and the container loading. Cost: 0.3–0.8% of the order. This is mandatory for sour service (NACE MR0175) and nuclear-grade (RCC-M) orders.
EZ Steel ships in 20'GP / 40'GP containers. A 20'GP takes ~22 t of 316L Sch 40S NPS 4 — roughly 230 tubes. Lead time ex-Changsha: 25–35 days for stocked grades, 45–60 days for duplex / 904L mill runs. Documents: commercial invoice, packing list, MTC (EN 10204 3.1), certificate of origin (Form A or E for tariff preference), bill of lading, and PSI report.
If you are buying stainless steel pipe for a process skid, you almost always also need carbon steel pipe for the utility side, pipe fittings (BW elbows, tees, reducers) to make the joints, and industrial valves for isolation. Combining them in one PO with one supplier saves 5–10% on logistics and a great deal of administrative friction. EZ Steel supplies all four families out of one mill-direct programme.
Stainless is not always the right answer. Three cases where a different material is a better economic decision:
The wrong alloy choice is more expensive than the wrong supplier. A well-spec'd carbon steel pipe lasts decades; a mis-applied 304 fails in months.
Three shifts in the 2026 market that buyers should be aware of:
Q1. Can I use ASTM A312 TP304 instead of TP304H for a superheater?
No. A312 TP304 is the process-pipe grade; for sustained high-temperature creep service (≥525 °C) you need A213 TP304H, with controlled carbon (0.04–0.10%) and the proper solution-anneal condition. Using 304 in superheater service leads to early creep rupture and is the most common grade-substitution failure in legacy utility plants.
Q2. What is the difference between A312 seamless and A778 welded?
Both are austenitic, both can be the same grade, but A778 is the welded standard for low-temperature, low-pressure corrosive service (e.g. water treatment, food). A312 covers both seamless and welded and is the right choice when pressure or temperature is non-trivial. A778 welded is typically 10–20% cheaper because the production route is more efficient.
Q3. Do I need 316L or is 316 sufficient?
Use 316L whenever the tube or pipe will be welded in the field and the joint cannot be solution-annealed afterwards. 316 (0.08% C max) can sensitize at the weld HAZ. 316L (0.03% C max) does not. If the system is fully shop-fabricated and solution-annealed, 316 is fine.
Q4. Is duplex 2205 always better than 316L?
No. Duplex 2205 has roughly 2× the yield strength and better chloride SCC resistance, but it has a narrower temperature window (typically −50 °C to +300 °C). Above ~300 °C the ferrite phase can embrittle (475 °C embrittlement). For sustained high-temperature service, 321H / 347H is the right call. For seawater and produced water at moderate temperature, 2205 wins.
Q5. What MTC should I require?
For most applications, EN 10204 3.1 is sufficient. For nuclear, sour (NACE MR0175), or pressure-vessel service, require 3.2 — that is, witnessed by a third-party inspector (SGS, BV, TÜV, Lloyd's, DNV). EZ Steel provides both.
Q6. How do I check a Chinese mill-direct quote is real?
Three quick checks: (a) the kg/m weight must match the dimensional standard for the size and schedule quoted; (b) the chemistry in the MTC must match the grade (C, Cr, Ni, Mo); (c) the heat number on the MTC must be physically stamped on the tube end. If any of the three is missing, walk away.
Q7. Can EZ Steel also supply the matching fittings and valves?
Yes. We run an integrated programme covering pipe fittings (BW, SW, threaded, ASME B16.9 / B16.11), flanges, and industrial valves to API 6D / 600 / 598. Combining pipe + fittings + flanges + valves in one PO simplifies traceability and reduces administrative overhead.
A stainless steel pipe is, in the end, a piece of steel. What you are paying for is not the metal — it is the documentation, the traceability, the chemistry, the heat treatment, the NDT, and the willingness of the mill to stand behind every heat number for the next 20 years. EZ Steel Industrial has been doing exactly that since 1994, across 8 product lines and 70+ grade/size combinations, with API / EN / ASME certification and an ISO 9001-accredited lab.
If you are evaluating a mill-direct source for your next project — a chemical plant, a desalination skid, a boiler replacement, a marine piping refit, a food/pharma process line — send the spec. The 11-item checklist in Section 4 is the fastest way to a clean quote. EZ Steel responds with grade availability, MTC level, lead time, and FOB-China price within two business days.
