EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL · Flanges & Bolted Joints Insights
How to read flange classes, faces, materials and the matched gaskets, stud bolts and pipes that actually decide whether a joint holds pressure.
A steel flange is rarely a stand-alone purchase. The moment you bolt a flange to a valve header, a heat exchanger shell, or a pipeline tie-in, three more components enter the room: the pipe fitting or butt-weld end that the flange welds to, the gasket that sits between the two flange faces, and the stud bolts and nuts that tighten the whole joint. Get any one of those four items wrong and the joint leaks, even if the flange itself is perfectly machined. That is the first lesson every piping lead learns on a refinery or power-plant project, and the reason EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL has been exporting complete flange-and-joint packages since 1994.
Procurement teams often treat a flange RFQ as a single-line item. In reality, a Class 150 RF flange, a Class 600 RTJ flange, and a Class 900 weld-neck flange are three different commodities with three different pressure-temperature envelopes, three different face finishes, and three different bolting and gasket schedules. Add industrial valves on the same line and you have a bolted joint that must hold the same design pressure for the next 20 to 30 years.
EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL runs the flange, the butt-weld and socket-weld fittings, the stud bolts and gaskets, and the upstream pipe on a single ISO 9001 quality system. With 480,000+ tons of annual capacity and 500+ employees, we can put a flange and its complete bolting kit on the same MTR, the same heat number, and the same shipping pallet. That is the practical value of mill-direct supply: one supplier, one documentation chain, one responsible point of contact.
Flange type is dictated by duty, not by tradition. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL supplies the six families below, all to ASME B16.5 / B16.47 / EN 1092-1 / GOST 33259 and the matched MSS-SP dimensional standards. Picking the wrong one is one of the most expensive errors on a piping project.
A long tapered hub that is butt-welded to the pipe gives a smooth bore, low turbulence, and excellent fatigue performance under thermal cycling. Weld-neck flanges dominate Class 600 and above in refinery, hydrocracker, ethylene, and high-pressure steam service. They are the natural partner for API 600 gate valves and API 6D ball valves.
Slip-on flanges slip over the pipe and are fillet-welded inside and outside. They are easier to align, cheaper to make, and perfectly adequate for Class 150 and Class 300 utility, water, fire-protection, and low-pressure gas service. Avoid them in high-cycle thermal or sour (NACE) service.
A socket-weld flange has a socket that the pipe is inserted into and then fillet-welded. It is used in small-bore (typically NPS 1/2 to NPS 2) high-pressure instrument, sample, and chemical-injection lines. Socket-weld flanges work alongside socket-weld fittings, both of which EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL produces under ASME B16.5 and B16.11.
Threaded flanges are tapped to match NPT or BSP threads on the pipe. They are common in utility, drain, and small-bore auxiliary lines where welding is restricted (e.g., plant areas classified as non-welding). They are not recommended for service above 260 °C or for cyclic duty.
A lap-joint flange is paired with a stub end that is butt-welded to the pipe. The flange rotates freely, which simplifies bolt-hole alignment on large-diameter or lined systems. Lap-joint flanges are the standard choice for stainless or alloy systems where the flange itself is made of carbon steel (cost saving) and the wetted side is the alloy stub end.
Blind flanges close a line, a vessel, or a manway. They carry the full design pressure with no bore and are often used as test blanks. Blind flanges for higher classes (Class 600 and above) are heavy and should be specified with lifting ears when size exceeds NPS 12.
Buyer tip: When you compare flange suppliers, ask for the ASME B16.5 / B16.47 dimensional report, the EN 10204 3.1 / 3.2 mill test certificate, the NACE MR0175 hardness compliance (for sour service), and the matched stud-bolt and gasket schedule on the same quotation. A flange quoted 5% cheaper without the bolting and gasket data will cost your project weeks of rework in procurement.
The reference article on American-standard gate valves highlights the four core API gate-valve standards (API 600, 6D, 602, 603) and the matched flange/inspection standards. The same logic applies on the flange side: design, dimensional, material, and inspection standards have to match across the whole bolted joint. Below is the working map that EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL uses on every export RFQ.

A flange is only as good as the joint you build around it. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL ships the four components on the same MTR chain so that traceability, material, and pressure class are guaranteed to line up on site.
Material drives both lifecycle cost and safety margin. The four families below cover roughly 95% of the industrial flanges EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL ships.
| Family | Typical ASTM Grades | Best For | Watch-outs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carbon & low-temp carbon | A105, A350 LF2 Cl.1, A516-70 | General service, -46 °C to 425 °C, oil & gas, power, water, steam | Not for corrosive media; check NACE for sour service. |
| Austenitic stainless | A182 F304 / F304L, F316 / F316L, F321, F347 | Chemical, food, pharma, marine, -196 °C LNG to 800 °C | Sensitization above 425 °C; use L-grade for welded service to avoid intergranular corrosion. |
| Alloy steel | A182 F11 / F12, F22, F91, F92 | High-temperature power and petrochemical (450-650 °C) | Hardness-controlled per NACE; PWHT may be required. |
| Duplex & super-duplex | A182 F51 (2205), F55 (2507), F53 (2507) | Seawater, sour, chloride-containing service | Strict heat-input control during welding; solution anneal required. |
The most common field question is "which class and which face?" Below is a simplified working map that the EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL sales engineering team uses on every inquiry. For a full ASME B16.5 pressure-temperature table, request the engineering datasheet at RFQ stage.
Over three decades of mill-direct exports, our steel flanges and complete bolted-joint packages have been delivered into some of the most demanding projects in the world.
Every flange we ship carries documentation an inspector can actually use. Our ISO 9001 lab and ASME / AWS-certified procedures cover the full quality chain.
The result is a Mill Test Report (MTR) plus, when required, NACE MR0175 / MR0103 certification for sour (H₂S) service, EN 10204 3.1 / 3.2 certificates, and full dimensional reports. The bolting is shipped on a separate traceable schedule but the heat number is cross-referenced to the same MTR lot.
To get a fast, accurate mill-direct quotation, send the following five items in one email.
With these five items, EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL can return a packaged offer covering steel flanges, matched fittings, gaskets, stud bolts, and the upstream pipe from a single source — usually within three working days.
Slip-on flanges are fine for Class 150 and Class 300 low-pressure utility, water, air, and fire-protection. From Class 600 up, in cyclic thermal service, in sour (NACE) service, and on hydrocarbon process lines, always specify weld-neck. The butt-welded tapered hub gives a smooth bore, lower turbulence, and superior fatigue life.
Raised Face (RF) is the default for Class 150-600 with spiral-wound or compressed non-asbestos gaskets. Flat Face (FF) is used with cast iron or non-metallic flanges in low-pressure water. Ring-Type Joint (RTJ) is mandatory for Class 600 and above in high-pressure hydrocarbon, with metal ring gaskets (soft iron, low-carbon steel, 304, 316, Monel 400) seated in the machined groove.
No. The two classes have different OD, BC, thickness, and bolt-hole patterns. Mating a Class 150 to a Class 300 is a sure path to a leak or a rupture. Always use the class specified in the line class table.
For wetted parts in H₂S-containing service, specify NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 on the inquiry. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL will deliver flanges, bolting, and trim with documented hardness ≤ 22 HRC (237 HB) and the matching NACE MTC.
No. They differ in dimensions, bolt patterns, and pressure-temperature ratings. A project in Europe should use EN 1092-1 (Type 01-13); a project in the Americas, the Middle East, or Asia-Pacific typically uses ASME B16.5 / B16.47. Mismatched flanges will not bolt up.
Mill-direct pricing is typically 20-40% below stockist pricing for the same ASME B16.5 / B16.47 flange, you get the mill MTC and full heat traceability from a single source, you can bundle the flange with the matching pipe, fittings, gaskets, and bolting on the same shipment, and your lead time becomes a direct mill schedule instead of stockist inventory cycle. The breakeven is usually around 2-5 tonnes per project.
EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL has been exporting steel flanges and complete bolted-joint packages since 1994. With 500+ employees, 480,000+ tons of annual capacity, and a documented ISO 9001 quality system, we help EPC contractors, distributors, and end users shorten their supply chain and reduce project risk.
Send your flange list, line class table, or RFQ today, and our sales engineers will propose a single, traceable package — flanges, fittings, gaskets, stud bolts, and the matched pipe — that fits your project schedule.
