A practical selection handbook for engineers, EPC contractors, and procurement teams who need dependable pipe flanges for refineries, power plants, shipyards, and water projects.
A pipe flange looks like a simple ring of steel — until a wrong grade shows up on site. A flange that is one pressure class too low, made from the wrong alloy, or ordered without a matching gasket will leak at first heat-up, fail hydrotest, or shut down a plant during commissioning. Most of these problems start long before fabrication: they begin with the procurement specification.
After three decades supplying flanges, fittings, and pressure piping to the world’s most demanding projects — including China’s West-East Gas Pipeline and South-to-North Water Diversion — we have seen that the right steel flanges are less about the catalog number and more about how the type, material, facing, and pressure class line up with the service fluid, temperature, and inspection regime. This guide walks through the four decisions that determine whether a flange performs for the next 20 years — or becomes a maintenance headache in year two.
Before browsing flange types, capture the operating envelope of the line. The four numbers below decide almost every downstream choice:
Once these are fixed, the flange type, material grade, facing, and bolt class all follow logically. Without them, even an experienced supplier is forced to quote the most common stock item, which is rarely the optimal one.
Each flange type solves a different connection problem. The table below summarizes the structures that EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL regularly supplies for industrial piping.
| Type | Typical Use | When to Choose It |
|---|---|---|
| Slip-On (SO) | Low-to-medium pressure utility lines | Cost-sensitive service, easier field alignment, fillet-welded assembly |
| Weld Neck (WN) | High pressure, high temperature, critical service | Stress transfer through the hub, full-penetration butt weld, preferred for cyclic duty |
| Blind (BL) | End closures, vessel heads, test blanks | Line isolation, hydrostatic testing, future tie-in points |
| Socket Weld (SW) | Small-bore high-pressure piping | Smooth bore, limited crevice, 1″ and below instrumentation lines |
| Threaded (TH) | Low-pressure, non-critical service | Where welding is not permitted; economical for firewater and drainage |
| Lap Joint (LJ) | Stainless or alloy lines requiring frequent dismantling | Backing flange rotates around a stub end for bolt-hole alignment |
Practical tip: A weld neck flange costs more than a slip-on but pays back quickly in any line that sees thermal cycling, vibration, or hydrotest above 40 bar. For refinery hydrocracker and power-plant high-pressure feedwater, WN is almost always the right call.
Material selection is where many projects quietly overspend or under-spec. The wrong material either corrodes through, or costs 3–5× more than necessary. Three families cover the majority of industrial service.
ASTM A105, A350 LF2, and A516 Grade 70 are the workhorses for hydrocarbon service, steam, and water. They are weldable, machinable, and stocked in nearly every size from ½″ to 60″. For sour service (NACE MR0175), restricted-hardness grades are mandatory. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL holds full traceability on every heat and supplies EN 10204 3.1 / 3.2 certificates on request.
A182 F304/F304L, F316/F316L, and the duplex grades (F51, F53, F55) cover most corrosive, hygienic, and offshore service. Stainless flanges pair naturally with our stainless steel pipe range for process modules where mixed materials would create galvanic risk. For chloride-bearing environments above 60 °C, duplex or super-duplex is often the more economical long-term choice despite the higher unit price.
For seawater cooling, firewater, and shipboard piping, 90/10 and 70/30 copper-nickel flanges are the industry default. They resist biofouling, tolerate moderate velocities, and remain stable in brackish water. We supply both 90/10 (UNS C70600) and 70/30 (UNS C71500) copper nickel flanges in weld neck, slip-on, and blind configurations to EEMUA 234, ASTM B151, and ASME SB564. For higher temperatures and aggressive chemicals, Monel 400, Inconel 625, and other nickel alloys are available on mill order.
Pressure class is often confused with pressure rating. In ASME terminology, “Class 150” is not “rated for 150 psi” — it is a class identifier that, with the material group and temperature, defines the actual allowable pressure. The most common industrial classes are 150, 300, 600, 900, 1500, and 2500.
A flange joint is a system, not a ring. The right gasket and stud bolt set are just as critical as the flange body. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL supplies gasket stud bolt nut kits matched to the flange size, class, and facing — spiral-wound, ring-joint, compressed non-asbestos, graphite, and PTFE — so the entire sealing package arrives together, traceable, and ready for installation.
There is a real difference between a mill-direct flange and one passed through several intermediaries. When you buy from a manufacturer with its own forging, machining, and inspection facilities, you control the heat number, the chemistry, the heat treatment, and the test records. When you buy through a trading house, you inherit the supplier they used that month.
EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL has been a mill-direct producer since 1994, with 500+ technical staff, an annual capacity above 480,000 tons, and a fully accredited ISO 9001 laboratory. Our carbon steel pipe, fittings, and flanges are produced under API, EN, and ASME certifications for EPC contractors, shipyards, petrochemical plants, and power-generation projects — including the South-to-North Water Diversion and West-East Gas Pipeline.
Send us your line class, fluid, and quantity — we will return a recommendation, a datasheet, and a quotation within one business day. From pipe flanges and gaskets to a complete piping package including pipes, fittings, and valves, EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL delivers mill-direct quality with project-level coordination.
