Picking the wrong flange material can shut down a plant. This guide compares carbon, stainless and alloy steel flanges so engineers and buyers can match the right grade to pressure, temperature and corrosion service.
A steel flange is more than a connection ring. It transfers mechanical load, seals the joint against the process medium, and survives pressure cycling for years. When the material grade is wrong, you get corrosion pitting, gasket blowout, or brittle fracture under cold start-up.
In real EPC and plant maintenance work, flange material is almost always decided together with the pipe material, the bolt set, and the gasket. That is why gasket stud bolt nut specifications and the flange grade are issued on the same data sheet. Treating pipe flanges as a standalone purchase is one of the most common causes of joint leakage in the field.
Most published flange standards (ASME B16.5, EN 1092-1, JIS B2220, GOST) allow the same pressure classes to be produced in different steel families. The material, not the dimension table, decides where the flange can be used.
Carbon steel is the default for low-to-medium temperature, non-corrosive service. Grades such as ASTM A105, A350 LF2, and the Chinese 20# / 16Mn cover the bulk of oil and gas, power plant, and general plant piping. They are economical, easy to machine, and easy to weld.
When the line is downstream of a carbon steel pipe spool, sticking to a carbon steel flange keeps the galvanic series consistent and avoids unexpected bimetallic corrosion at the joint.
Austenitic stainless flanges (304/304L, 316/316L) are used wherever corrosion, hygiene, or elevated temperature rules out carbon steel. They show up in chemical, food, pharmaceutical, and marine systems. For sour service or chloride-bearing water, higher alloys such as 321, 347, or duplex 2205 are often selected.
Stainless flanges are typically paired with stainless pipe fittings so the whole joint behaves as one alloy system.
Alloy flanges contain chromium, molybdenum, and sometimes vanadium. Grades like F11, F22, and F91 are designed for high-temperature headers, boiler drums, and hydrocracker reactors. They retain strength above 400°C where carbon steel would creep rapidly.
| Property | Carbon Steel | Stainless Steel | Alloy Steel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical Grades | A105, A350 LF2, 20# | 304/304L, 316/316L, Duplex | F11, F22, F91 |
| Max Service Temperature | Up to ~425°C | Up to ~800°C (grade dependent) | Up to ~600°C+ |
| Corrosion Resistance | Limited; needs coating or lining | Excellent in most chemical media | Moderate; depends on alloy content |
| Relative Cost | Lowest | Medium to high | High |
| Typical Use | Oil & gas, water, steam, structural | Chemical, food, marine, pharma | Power, high-pressure, high-temp |
Material is only half of the decision. The flange facing and structural form must also fit the duty:
For most refinery, chemical and power applications the Weld Neck flange in the matching steel family is the safe default. Slip-on and blind flanges are then selected case by case.
An experienced buyer never sources flanges in isolation. The flange, the gasket, the stud bolts, and the mating industrial valves all share the same pressure class and the same corrosion environment. Mixing a Class 300 weld neck with a Class 150 valve, or a carbon steel flange with stainless bolts, is a frequent source of leaks on site.
A clean procurement data sheet should always list:
EZ Steel Industrial has supplied flanges, pipes, fittings, and valves to EPC contractors and plant operators since 1994. The steel flanges range covers carbon, stainless, and alloy grades in ASME, EN, JIS, BS, and GOST standards, while the pipe flanges category extends to copper-nickel alloys for marine service.
Because the same factory also produces carbon steel pipe, pipe fittings, industrial valves, and gasket stud bolt nut sets, material certificates, heat numbers, and pressure classes can be matched across the entire joint bundle, not just the flange. This is what we mean by a project-centered, full-cycle supply.
Send us your line class, design pressure and temperature, and the process medium. EZ Steel Industrial will return a complete joint package: flange type, material grade, facing, gasket, stud bolt, and mating valve specification, with mill certificates attached. One RFQ, one consistent answer, one shipment to site.
