EZ Steel Industrial · Structural Pipe & Foundation Piling 2026
A practical procurement playbook for civil engineers, EPC buyers and foundation contractors sourcing structure works pipe from a mill-direct Chinese manufacturer with bundled piping components.
When a project engineer prices a deep-foundation package, the headline numbers usually belong to the concrete, the rebar, the piling rig and the geotechnical contractor. The structure works pipe — the welded or seamless steel casing that carries the load or forms the cast-in-place pile — gets treated as a commodity.
In practice, the wrong steel grade, the wrong wall thickness, or the wrong delivery condition on a structural pipe pile can stop a rig, force a redesign, or shorten the design life of the structure by decades. ASTM A252 Grade 3 pipe piles routinely carry 45,000 psi minimum yield strength, EN 10210 hot-finished hollow sections deliver impact-tested toughness down to −20 °C, and GB/T 8162 seamless tubes have been quietly doing the same job on Chinese infrastructure since 1994.
This guide is written for the procurement and engineering teams that have to translate a geotechnical report into a steel specification they can actually order, ship and drive — without having to re-tender three months later.
Quick read
If you only have 60 seconds, jump to Section 3 (ASTM A252 grade cheat sheet) and Section 9 (procurement checklist) before you send your next inquiry to any mill.
"Structure works" is the catch-all term used in the steel pipe industry for tubular products that are not carrying pressure and not transporting fluid. The product family covers four very different duty cycles, and mixing them up is the most common specification mistake.
| Duty cycle | Typical standard | Form | Main use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Load-bearing pipe piles | ASTM A252 / EN 10219 / JIS A5525 | Welded or seamless, large OD | Bridge piers, building foundations, wharves |
| Structural hollow sections | EN 10210 (hot-finished) / EN 10219 (cold-formed) / ASTM A500 | Round, square, rectangular | Building columns, trusses, space frames |
| General structural tubes | GB/T 8162 / JIS G3444 / GOST 8732 | Seamless or welded | Mechanical parts, brackets, machine frames |
| Casing / shell piles | ASTM A252 + project-specific | Welded, often thick-wall | Temporary or permanent casing for cast-in-place concrete |
At EZ Steel Industrial, all four duty cycles sit under one structure works category inside the carbon steel pipe line, and a parallel stainless line covers the same products for corrosive environments. That means a buyer can pull a complete structural package — piles, hollow sections, matching flanges and connecting pipe — from a single mill test certificate family.
ASTM A252 is the most widely specified standard for cylindrical steel pipe piles in North America and the Middle East. It covers both welded and seamless pipe, and the three grades differ only in strength — the chemistry, dimensions and testing regime are otherwise identical.
| Property | Grade 1 | Grade 2 | Grade 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Min. yield strength | 30,000 psi (205 MPa) | 35,000 psi (240 MPa) | 45,000 psi (310 MPa) |
| Min. tensile strength | 50,000 psi (345 MPa) | 60,000 psi (415 MPa) | 66,000 psi (455 MPa) |
| Min. elongation in 2 in. | 30% | 25% | 20% |
| Typical wall tolerance | ± 12.5% (standard) | ± 12.5% | ± 12.5% (tighter on request) |
| Form | Welded or seamless | Welded or seamless | Welded or seamless |
| Best fit | Light structures, casings, sign gantries | Building foundations, low-rise frames | Bridge piers, marine wharves, high-capacity bearing piles |
The choice of grade is driven by the geotechnical capacity demand, not the availability. A 45 ksi Grade 3 pile costs more per ton than a 30 ksi Grade 1, but allows the same load to be carried on fewer, smaller-diameter piles — which usually reduces the overall foundation cost. EZ Steel Industrial stocks Grade 2 and Grade 3 as standard and can dual-certify to A252 plus EN 10219 on the same heat when the project sits in both regions.
In European, Middle Eastern and African infrastructure, EN 10210 and EN 10219 are the two structural hollow section (SHS) standards that come up on almost every civil RFQ. They look interchangeable on a datasheet, but they are produced by fundamentally different routes and end up in very different services.
EN 10210 covers hollow sections made by hot-forming at temperatures above the recrystallisation temperature of the steel. The result is a normalised grain structure, excellent impact toughness (typically 27 J at −20 °C as standard), and a wall thickness range that reaches 100 mm and above for the largest sections. EN 10210 is the right choice for bridge piers, offshore wind monopile transition pieces, and any heavily loaded column where fatigue performance matters.
EN 10219 covers hollow sections formed from strip at room temperature and welded, then stress-relief annealed. The process gives tighter dimensional tolerances, thinner walls and a wider choice of square and rectangular profiles, but at the cost of lower impact toughness and reduced fatigue performance. EN 10219 is the right choice for building frames, canopies, sign gantries, secondary structural members and architectural applications where tight tolerances and clean surface finish matter more than ultimate toughness.
| Attribute | EN 10210 (hot-finished) | EN 10219 (cold-formed) |
|---|---|---|
| Forming temperature | Above recrystallisation | Room temperature |
| Typical impact (27 J) | −20 °C as standard | 0 °C standard, −20 °C on request |
| Wall thickness range | Up to 100 mm+ | Typically up to 16 mm |
| Dimensional tolerance | Looser | Tighter |
| Best fit | Bridge piers, offshore, heavy columns | Building frames, canopies, secondary members |
Most international projects reference at least one of the standards below, and a savvy buyer will dual-certify the same heat against two of them to keep the supply base portable.
| Standard | Origin | Form | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| ASTM A500 | USA | Cold-formed welded & seamless, round/shaped | Building columns, trusses, space frames |
| ASTM A252 | USA | Welded & seamless, large OD | Foundation piles, casings |
| EN 10210-1/2 | Europe | Hot-finished SHS/RHS/CHS | Bridges, offshore, heavy columns |
| EN 10219-1/2 | Europe | Cold-formed SHS/RHS/CHS | Building frames, canopies |
| JIS G3444 | Japan | Carbon steel tubes for general structure | Japanese and SE Asian infrastructure |
| GB/T 8162 | China | Seamless structure tubes | Mechanical parts, frames, hydraulic cylinders |
| GOST 8732 | Russia / CIS | Hot-rolled seamless structure pipe | CIS-region projects, structural frames |
EZ Steel Industrial routinely produces to ASTM A252 / A500 in parallel with the equivalent EN 10210 / EN 10219 grade on the same heat number. The mill test certificate (MTC) then lists both standards in the supplementary requirements box, which is what most EPC quality plans actually ask for.
The two production routes give very different products, and the choice drives cost, lead time, dimensional envelope and what the structure is allowed to do in service.
Produced by hot-extruding or hot-piercing a solid billet, seamless structural pipe has uniform mechanical properties around the circumference and no weld seam. OD typically ranges from 6 mm to 720 mm with wall thickness from 1 mm to 100 mm. The default choice for high-stress members, dynamic loads, low-temperature service and any application where a weld seam is treated as a defect initiation point. EZ Steel Industrial delivers seamless structural pipe to GB/T 8162, JIS G3444 (SMLS option), GOST 8732 and ASTM equivalents.
Formed from coil or plate and welded by ERW, LSAW or SSAW processes, welded structural pipe covers the largest diameters and thickest walls (up to 4,000 mm OD for spiral pipe). The weld seam is the weakest area, so the standard usually requires 100% radiographic or ultrasonic testing of the seam. Welded structural pipe is the right choice for piling where the loads are predominantly compressive, and for the long, large-diameter casings used in bridge pier construction.
| Route | Typical OD range | Wall thickness | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seamless (GB/T 8162, GOST 8732, JIS G3444) | 6 – 720 mm | 1 – 100 mm | Dynamic loads, low-temp, mechanical parts |
| ERW welded | 21 – 660 mm | 2 – 22 mm | Light structural members, low-rise frames |
| LSAW (longitudinal submerged-arc) | 406 – 1,420 mm | 6 – 65 mm | Bridge piers, marine casings, large piles |
| SSAW (spiral submerged-arc) | 219 – 4,000 mm | 5 – 25 mm | Long pile lines, wharves, low-pressure casings |
Across three decades of mill-direct supply, EZ Steel Industrial has delivered structural pipe into the typical services below — most of which are still in service today.
In most of these services the structural pipe is a small fraction of the total project cost but the line item that determines whether the foundation is built on time and whether it carries the design load for the next 50 years. That is why it pays to specify the mill rather than chase the lowest unit price.
After thirty years supplying the global civil engineering market, EZ Steel Industrial has seen the same five mistakes drive up cost and delay structural pipe projects:
