A four-axis framework (process, grade, cross-standard, coating) plus an A252 mechanical property table, a 5x5 standard cross-reference, and the structural-works bundle that turns a single pipe pile into a port, bridge or offshore-wind foundation.
If you are specifying a 24-inch Grade 3 pipe pile for a port quay wall, a 16-inch EN 10210 hollow section for a bridge pier, or a spiral-weld large-diameter pile for an offshore-wind jacket, you already know the conversation does not end at the pipe. The right structure works selection has to be made in the same breath as the matching grade, the cross-standard compatibility, the coating envelope, and the mill that can deliver the pile + the pile cap + the superstructure tube in one shipment. EZ Steel Industrial has been that mill since 1994 — 500+ employees, 480,000+ tonnes of annual capacity, and project-bundled deliveries to the South-to-North Water Diversion, the West-East Gas Pipeline, port and bridge EPCs across Asia, the Middle East and Latin America.
This guide uses the same four-axis framework (process, grade, cross-standard, coating) that ASTM A252 / EN 10210 / JIS A5525 / GB/T 13793 all rely on, but extends it to the structural-works bundle a 2026 buyer actually compares: pipe pile + hollow section + structural tube + companion pipe fittings. Wherever the customer product line intersects a spec clause, you will find a direct link to the relevant structure works page so engineering and procurement speak the same language.
Before you compare mill quotes, lock the four standard axes. They are the only common language a Chinese mill, a Korean EPC and a Saudi Aramco engineer all share. Skipping this step is the single most common reason pipe-pile orders are re-issued at the 11th hour.
Brands change. Standards endure. ASTM A252 (pipe piles), EN 10210-1 (hot-finished hollow sections), EN 10219-1 (cold-formed hollow sections), JIS A5525 (steel pipe piles), GB/T 13793 (structural welded steel pipes) and API 5L (line pipe, where the same product re-purposed as a structural tube) are the only documents you can hand to a third-party inspector and have a meaningful conversation. Anchor your spec to these — not to a brochure.
The single most important table a structural-works buyer carries. Anchoring to A252 first, then walking the grade to the local standard (EN / JIS / GB) is the procurement-team shortcut. The 8-category EZ Steel catalog ships structure works with the same MTC chain that backs the pipe pile, the hollow section and the structural tube.
| Property | Grade 1 | Grade 2 | Grade 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum tensile strength | 50,000 psi [345 MPa] | 60,000 psi [415 MPa] | 66,000 psi [455 MPa] |
| Minimum yield strength | 30,000 psi [205 MPa] | 35,000 psi [240 MPa] | 45,000 psi [310 MPa] |
| Elongation, 8" gauge, min | 18 % | 14 % | — |
| Elongation, 2" gauge, min | 30 % | 25 % | 20 % |
| Phosphorus, max | 0.050 % | 0.050 % | 0.050 % |
| OD tolerance | ±1 % of specified OD | ±1 % of specified OD | ±1 % of specified OD |
| Wall thickness, min | 87.5 % of nominal | 87.5 % of nominal | 87.5 % of nominal |
| Weight tolerance (when specified) | +15 % / -5 % | +15 % / -5 % | +15 % / -5 % |
For piles with nominal wall thickness below 5/16" (7.9 mm), the elongation requirement is reduced per A252: Grade 1 by 1.50 % per 1/32" (0.8 mm) reduction, Grade 2 by 1.25 %, Grade 3 by 1.0 %. The reduction is cumulative and is the most-overlooked clause in commercial RFQs — EZ Steel flags it on every MTC.
A 2026 buyer rarely works in a single standard. Port EPCs mix A252 and EN 10210, offshore-wind EPCs mix EN 10219 and A252, Chinese port EPCs mix GB/T 13793 and JIS A5525. The cross-reference below is the table a project structural engineer will ask for in the first week. The 8-category EZ Steel catalog publishes it openly on the structure works family page.
| ASTM A252 | EN 10219-1 (cold-formed) | EN 10210-1 (hot-finished) | JIS A5525 | GB/T 13793 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Grade 1 — 30 ksi yield (205 MPa) | S235 J0H / J2H | S235 J0H / J2H | SKK400 | Q235 |
| Grade 2 — 35 ksi yield (240 MPa) | S275 J0H / J2H | S275 J0H / J2H | SKK400 | Q275 |
| Grade 3 — 45 ksi yield (310 MPa) | S355 J0H / J2H | S355 J0H / J2H | SKK490 | Q345 |
| A252 G3 (higher charpy / offshore) | S420 MH / NLH | S420 MH / NLH | SKK490 (with -40°C CVN) | Q345 (with -40°C CVN) |
| API 5L X52 (re-purposed structural) | S355 / S420 | S355 / S420 | STK490 / SKK490 | Q345 / Q390 |
If the project's main standard is A252, lock the A252 grade first (G1 / G2 / G3), then use the table to write the EN / JIS / GB equivalent into the mill's MTC. A 480,000+ t/y mill with both API / EN / ASME certifications can hold one MTC chain across all five standards — that is the structural-works version of the bundled-sourcing model.
The longest single factor in pile life is not the grade. It is the coating envelope. A252 does not specify a coating; the project specification does. Use the matrix below as the default selection, then escalate to a project-specific cathodic-protection study for buried or immersed service. The structure works family page at EZ Steel ships all four options from one production system with one MTC chain.
A pipe pile does not arrive in isolation. It welds to a pile cap, splices to a continuation pile (for lengths above 25 m), and connects to the superstructure through a structural tube. The same mill-direct discipline that protects the pile has to extend to the joint, otherwise you have a Grade 3 A252 pile welded to a sub-grade pile cap. The 8-category EZ Steel catalog is built so that structure works, pipe fittings and structural tubes ride the same MTC chain.
The cost of bundling the pile with the pile cap, splice and structural tube is roughly 4-7 % lower than separate POs (in our 2024-2025 project book), and the critical-path saving is 3-5 weeks on a typical 10-14 week port or bridge schedule. That is the entire foundation-window recovered.
Before you release the RFQ, tick the 9 boxes below. A mill-direct supplier with project-bundled scope should answer all 9 without you chasing a sales engineer for two weeks.
A simple decision tree: if the pile is a temporary structure (falsework, access trestle, temporary bridge), pick Grade 1. If it is a permanent building pile, light-port pile or small bridge pier, pick Grade 2. If it is a port quay wall, large bridge pier, offshore-wind monopile or any pile with a high driving stress or rock-socket demand, pick Grade 3. The yield strength jump from G2 to G3 (240 to 310 MPa) is what allows the same OD to absorb a heavier hammer blow or a longer unsupported length.
Three levers: (a) diameter — for OD > ~24" spiral-weld (HSAW) is the only cost-effective option; (b) duty — for high-load, deep-foundation or corrosive-environment piles, seamless or LSAW is preferred; (c) economy — for general building piles, ERW gives the best cost / property balance. The weld seam on a properly made ERW pile does not fail in service per A252 §6; do not over-pay for seamless if the duty does not demand it.
A252 §12 allows three steps: (a) defect depth ≤ 12.5 % of nominal wall — accept after grinding / filing to confirm depth; (b) defect depth > 12.5 % but ≤ 33.33 % — weld-repair allowed, provided the defect is fully removed first and the repair is NDT-checked; (c) defect depth > 33.33 % — reject the section. Anything beyond 33.33 % is not repairable per A252. The 33.33 % threshold is the project's last line of defence against a sub-grade pile entering the field.
Welded splices (full-penetration butt weld per AWS D1.1) are the default for permanent structures. The procedure must be qualified before production (test plate, tensile, bend, Charpy where required). Mechanical sleeve splices (per ASTM A537 or proprietary) are used for rapid-driving, temporary works, or where on-site welding is impractical (offshore, restricted space). Mechanical splices have lower fatigue life; never use them for bridge or offshore-wind fatigue-sensitive service.
EN 10219-1 is the cold-formed hollow section standard (formed at room temperature from coil, welded seam, normalized). EN 10210-1 is the hot-finished hollow section standard (formed hot, seamless or welded, normalized). For structural works, EN 10210 S355 J2H is the workhorse for European bridge and port work — better ductility, tighter tolerances, no cold-work residual stress. EN 10219 S355 J2H is acceptable for building frames and lighter structures, and is more cost-effective. The 480,000+ t/y mill capacity at EZ Steel means you can hold one MTC chain across both ENs and A252 in one project bundle.
The single largest avoidable cost on a multi-category structure-works bundle in 2026 is the stockist margin and the MTC fragmentation that comes with it. A mill-direct project bundle (pipe pile + hollow section + structural tube + pile cap + pipe fittings) brings:
EZ Steel's 480,000+ t/y capacity across 8 product categories (carbon and carbon-alloy steel, stainless steel, copper-nickel alloy, heat efficiency tubes, pipe fittings, pipe flanges, gaskets / stud bolts / nuts, and industrial valves) is the reason a single mill-direct PO can cover the full scope from pipe pile to pile cap to bolted joint — and ship in one window. The 1994-vintage operation, the API / EN / ASME / JIS certifications, and the 30+ years of project experience on China's South-to-North Water Diversion, West-East Gas Pipeline, port, bridge and offshore-wind EPCs are what back the certificate chain.
