A structure works line is the silent backbone of every foundation pile, building truss, bridge member, and offshore jacket — and the place where a wrongly specified grade quietly costs the project a re-test, a re-quote, or a re-pile. This guide walks procurement, project, and QA teams through the five international standards that govern structural steel pipe, the matching pipe fittings and pipe flanges to bundle with it, and how EZ Steel Industrial ships the whole scope from one mill.
In an EPC or shipyard inquiry, the phrase "structural pipe" hides four very different jobs. A pile driven into a soft marine clay needs a different metallurgical envelope than a truss chord in a stadium roof. Conflating them in a single spec is the most expensive mistake a procurement officer can make on a structure works order.
The four duties that show up most often, each with its own dominant standard, are:
Most RFQs we receive name one standard and assume it covers the project. In practice, the same nominal size can carry four different mechanical envelopes depending on which standard is written on the page. The table below maps the five standards our structural buyers actually call out, and the typical end use each one is intended for.
Quick Reference: Structural Pipe Standards vs End Use
| Standard | Form | Typical Grade | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| ASTM A252 | Welded or seamless | Gr. 1 / 2 / 3 (yield 205–310 MPa) | Driven pipe piles, caissons, deep foundations |
| ASTM A500 | Cold-formed welded | Gr. B / C (yield 290–345 MPa) | HSS columns, trusses, sign structures, building frames |
| EN 10210 | Hot-finished hollow | S235–S355 (yield 235–355 MPa) | Bridges, high-rise columns, transmission towers |
| JIS G3444 | Seamless or welded | STK400 / STK500 | General civil structures, scaffolding, towers |
| GOST 8732 / GB/T 8162 | Seamless hot-rolled | 10 / 20 / 35 / Q345 | Mechanical structure, hydraulic cylinders, supports |
A common miss on cross-border projects: specifying A500 cold-formed HSS where the design calc assumes the normalized, hot-finished properties of EN 10210. The two products have similar chemistry but different impact and through-thickness behavior. Pin the standard, then pin the delivery condition, before you pin the size.
A frequent buyer mistake is to treat a structure works line as a cheaper substitute for a pressure line. It is not. Pressure pipe under ASTM A106, A312, A335, EN 10216, or GB/T 8163 is qualified by hydrostatic test, NDT, and traceable heat chemistry. Structural pipe under A252, A500, or GB/T 8162 is qualified by mechanical test, dimensional tolerance, and — depending on the spec — a different NDT regime.
Running a structural grade through pressure service is a safety issue, not a cost issue. Running a pressure grade through structural duty is a cost issue: you are paying for traceability and NDT the building does not need. Match the standard to the duty and the mill book will line up accordingly.
A bundled structure works scope is never pipe alone. The piles connect to caps, the trusses connect to brackets, the supports connect to base plates, and every one of those connections needs a fitting or a flange from a mill that can prove the same material and heat-number discipline. Three pairing decisions recur on our project orders.
1. Piles to pile caps. Driven pipe piles under A252 typically need a cap plate, a base plate, or a transition piece cut from the same heat. Ordering the cap from the same mill that supplied the pile means the MTC chain is one document, not two. Where the cap is a structural connection rather than a pressure boundary, a matching steel flanges line (WN or lap-joint) gives the engineer a bolt pattern to work with instead of a site-welded transition.
2. HSS trusses to columns. A500 or EN 10210 HSS members usually need matching pipe fittings for cap plates, base plates, and gusset connections. For a one-bolt gusset to an HSS column, BW elbows or tees cut to drawing are a faster install than fabricated weldments — and they arrive with their own MTC.
3. Equipment supports to foundations. Pumps, compressors, fans, and vessels mounted on steel structures use small-bore threaded or socket-weld fittings for instrument connections and drain lines, and a structural pipe column for the main support leg. The full pipe fittings family at EZ Steel Industrial covers BW, SW, and threaded connections in matching steel grades so the MTC chain stays single-source.
A structural pipe is qualified by a different set of tests than a pressure pipe. The buyer who asks for a pressure-grade MTC on a structural shipment will overpay. The buyer who accepts a generic MTC on a critical pile will under-spec. The right documentation package, by duty, looks like this:
For any project destined for the European market, the CE marking chain under EN 1090-1 (Execution Class 1, 2, 3, or 4) also needs to be on the file. Our mill is set up to ship with EN 1090-compatible documentation when the RFQ calls it out.
Across the structure pipe orders we receive, the same five issues appear again and again. None of them are exotic, and every one of them is avoidable in the RFQ.
Pitfall 1: Naming A500 without the delivery condition. A500 can be shipped as-welded or as stress-relieved; the impact values and the dimensional tolerance differ. Write the delivery condition into the spec before you send the inquiry.
Pitfall 2: A252 Grade 1 ordered where the calc needs Grade 3. The three grades look interchangeable on paper, but yield and tensile differ by roughly 30%. If the design calc says Grade 3, the spec must say Grade 3 — not "or higher."
Pitfall 3: Galvanizing only added on the PO, not the RFQ. EN 10210 and GB/T 8162-2018 both now allow hot-dip galvanizing as an optional delivery state, but only when the contract specifies it. A galvanized HSS order written against a black-pipe quote is a 6-week re-quote.
Pitfall 4: Forgetting the cap plate MTC. The pipe pile arrives with a clean MTC. The cap plate was sourced from a different mill with a generic MTC. The inspector rejects the connection because the metallurgical trace stops at the cap.
Pitfall 5: Trading company quoted as mill. A trader can source a structural pipe faster than a mill-direct producer, but the documentation chain stops at the trader. For projects under EN 1090, API Q1, or owner audit, this is a non-starter.
Before you send the inquiry, the following ten points usually decide whether the quote comes back accurate the first time:
With those ten points on the inquiry, the structural pipe and its companion flanges and fittings can be quoted, scheduled, and shipped as a single package.
A long standard list means nothing if the mill cannot control the heat-to-heat consistency. EZ Steel Industrial has run continuous production of carbon, alloy, and stainless tubular products since 1994, with an annual capacity above 480,000 tons and more than 500 production and quality staff. The structural pipe line covers ASTM A252, A500, EN 10210, JIS G3444, GOST 8732, GB/T 8162, Q345, and Q390 in a single quality system, with the same MTC chain extending to the matching fittings, flanges, and bolts.
Our structural pipe has been specified into water diversion projects, west-east gas transmission line civil works, petrochemical pipe racks, marine vessel hull frames, foundation piling, transmission tower structures, and industrial building trusses. That project history is the most useful answer to a buyer's first question, which is usually can this mill deliver a matched structural and connection package on schedule and on certificate?
Send your datasheet, the design standard, the design temperature, the matching fitting or flange list, and the inspection scope, and the EZ Steel Industrial engineering team will return a bundled quote with full mill documentation. We respond in English, supply against ASTM / EN / JIS / GOST / GB standards, and ship to EPC, civil contractor, and structural steel fabricator buyers worldwide.
