A flange joint looks like a simple ring of metal — but in service it is a stack of components that have to behave as one system. Get any layer wrong and the whole joint leaks, creeps, or fails. This guide walks through each layer, from gasket stud bolt nut selection up to the matching pipe flanges and industrial valves, and explains how to specify the whole stack as a single bundled line item.
Walk into any refinery, LNG terminal, or chemical plant and the most common maintenance ticket is not a failed pipe — it is a leaking flange. The reason is structural. A bolted flange joint is a series arrangement: the gasket, the stud bolts, the nuts, the washers, the flange faces, the valve body, and the pipe on either side all share the same load path. If the bolt grade is too soft for the service, the gasket never reaches its seating stress. If the gasket is too soft for the pressure, the bolts over-elastic and the joint relaxes.
Procurement teams that buy each layer from a different supplier on different schedules learn this the hard way: a Class 300 flange arrives with a Class 150 gasket, or a B7 stud bolt is shipped with a 304 stainless nut that gall on first torque-up. The fix is to think of the joint as a single part number, even when it ships as five or six SKUs.
The gasket is the only intentionally compressible layer in the joint, and its job is to fill the micro-gaps on the flange face. Pick by service, not by habit. ASME B16.21 covers non-metallic flat gaskets (compressed non-asbestos, graphite, PTFE) for low-to-medium pressure utility service, while ASME B16.20 covers metallic gaskets — spiral-wound and ring-joint (RTJ) — for high-temperature and high-pressure process service.
| Service profile | Typical gasket type | Standard | Pressure / temperature range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water, air, low-pressure steam, mild chemicals | Compressed non-asbestos fibre | ASME B16.21 | Class 150 / PN 10–16, up to ~200 °C |
| Steam, hydrocarbons, hot oil | Graphite or flexible graphite with metal insert | ASME B16.21 | Class 150–300, up to ~450 °C |
| Strong acids, solvents, pharma | PTFE envelope / PTFE sheet | ASME B16.21 | Class 150, up to ~200 °C |
| Refinery, hydrocracker, high-temp process | Spiral-wound with inner & outer ring | ASME B16.20 | Class 300–600, up to ~650 °C |
| High-pressure wellhead, steam header, thermal oxidiser | Ring-joint (RTJ) — oval or octagonal | ASME B16.20 / API 6A | Class 600–2500, up to ~800 °C |
EZ Steel Industrial's gasket stud bolt nut range covers both non-metallic flat gaskets and metallic spiral-wound / RTJ gaskets, with optional inner and outer rings in carbon steel, 304, 316, and Monel for corrosion-critical services. Filler materials include flexible graphite, non-asbestos fibre, PTFE, and mica for high-temperature oxidation resistance.
Stud bolts do the clamping work; nuts transmit the load to the washer face. The standard pairing in petrochemical and refinery service is ASTM A193 Grade B7 studs with ASTM A194 Grade 2H heavy hex nuts — both quenched and tempered alloy steel, both fully traceable. For low-temperature service (LPG, LNG, ammonia), the pair shifts to A320 Grade L7 studs with L7 nuts. For corrosion service, A193 B8 / B8M (austenitic stainless) is paired with A194 Grade 8 / 8M nuts.
| Service | Stud bolt grade | Nut grade | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| High-temp / high-pressure (refinery, steam) | ASTM A193 B7 | ASTM A194 2H | Class 300 and above, up to ~450 °C |
| Low-temperature (LNG, LPG, ammonia) | ASTM A320 L7 / L7M | ASTM A194 L7 / L7M | Down to −46 °C impact tested |
| Corrosive / chemical (chloride risk) | ASTM A193 B8 / B8M (304 / 316) | ASTM A194 8 / 8M | Stainless process, seawater wash |
| High-temp stainless | ASTM A193 B16 | ASTM A194 7 / 7M | Steam turbines, hot reheat lines, up to ~600 °C |
Stud bolt length and thread engagement also matter. ASME B16.5 specifies the bolt diameter per flange class and NPS, but the length is calculated from the flange thickness, the gasket thickness (typically 4.5 mm for compressed non-asbestos, 6–7 mm for spiral-wound), the washer thickness, and the nut height. A stud that is 5 mm short will not engage enough threads; a stud that is 10 mm long will bottom out in the nut and give a false torque reading.
The flange face determines the gasket type, which determines the stud bolt torque, which determines the stud bolt grade. The most common face on ASME B16.5 flanges is the raised face (RF), with a 1.6 mm (63 μin) or 3.2 mm (125 μin) serrated finish that grips soft gaskets. For higher pressures, the ring-joint face (RTJ) is machined with grooves that match the RTJ gasket. Tongue-and-groove (T&G) and male-and-female (M&F) are used in heat exchanger and vessel services where alignment and a metal-to-metal stop are critical.
EZ Steel's pipe flanges cover the full ASME B16.5 pressure-class range from Class 150 through Class 2500, in carbon steel (A105), low-temperature carbon steel (A350 LF2), stainless steel (A182 F304 / F316 / F321), alloy steel (A182 F11 / F22), and duplex (F51 / F55). For marine and offshore, copper-nickel flanges per EEMUA 234 round out the range, with matching 90/10 and 70/30 Cu-Ni stud bolt kits.
The valve is the fifth member of the stack and the easiest to mis-spec. A gate valve on a low-pressure water line and a gate valve on a high-pressure steam header may share a face-to-face dimension but be built for completely different pressure-temperature envelopes. The body material, seat design, stem alloy, and packing set all have to match the same rating as the flange on the pipe side.
EZ Steel's industrial valves cover the seven families most projects need: gate, globe, check, ball, butterfly, plug, and safety/relief valves. Each is matched to the same ASME, API, or EN standard as the flanges and pipe that connect to it. That alignment removes the "valve arrived, but the flange face doesn't match" conversation that has derailed more than one commissioning schedule.
It is easy to forget that the pipe on either side of the joint is part of the load path. A Schedule 10S stainless pipe on a Class 300 flange is a mismatch — the pipe wall is too thin to seat the gasket without distorting the flange hub. EZ Steel supplies the matching pipe alongside the flange kit: ASTM A106 / A53 for high-temperature carbon service, A312 for stainless, A335 for alloy, and B466 / B111 for copper-nickel. Each grade is delivered with a mill test certificate that lists the actual chemistry and mechanicals, so the inspector can verify that the heat number on the flange matches the heat number on the pipe.
Even a perfectly specified stack will leak if it is not assembled correctly. The widely accepted industry procedure, codified in ASME PCC-1 and EN 1591-4, applies torque in three passes using a star (cross) pattern:
All threads, washers, and nut bearing surfaces must be lubricated with a controlled-friction compound (typically MoS₂ or PTFE-based, with a published K-factor or friction coefficient). Unlubricated assemblies routinely run 30–40% over target seating stress before they "feel" right, which crushes the gasket and overloads the studs.
Most flange-joint failures are procurement failures, not design failures. A short list of items to lock in the RFQ:
The advantage of consolidating a bolted-joint stack with a single mill-direct supplier is more than convenience. It shortens the inspection cycle, simplifies the MTC review, and removes the most common cause of site delay: parts that technically meet their own standard but do not fit together as a system. With 480,000+ tons of annual capacity, a 500+ strong technical team, and ISO 9001 plus API / EN / ASME certifications, EZ Steel Industrial is structured to quote and deliver the whole stack — pipe, flanges, gaskets, stud bolts and nuts, and matching valves — on one line, one heat-number chain, and one shipping plan.
Send your next RFQ with the pressure class, the service fluid, the temperature envelope, and the relevant standards (ASME, EN, JIS, GOST), and EZ Steel Industrial will respond with a consolidated mill-direct quote covering the gaskets, stud bolts, nuts, pipe flanges and industrial valves on one delivery schedule.
