Buyer's Guide · 2026 Edition
A field-tested procurement reference for engineers, EPC buyers, and industrial distributors sourcing forged threaded pipe fittings for small-bore water, oil, gas, steam, chemical, and instrumentation lines.
If you have ever stood in front of a piping isometric and asked "should this be screwed or welded?", you already know why threaded fittings still earn a permanent spot on every project's bill of materials. In a market that keeps pushing toward higher pressures and exotic alloys, the humble threaded elbow, tee, coupling, and union quietly continue to handle instrument air, cooling water, fire-protection mains, gas distribution, and chemical dosing lines across refineries, power plants, ships, and factories. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL has been forging and machining these small but critical components in China since 1994, and this guide collects the selection, material, sealing, testing, and sourcing questions our buyers ask most often.
A threaded pipe fitting is a forged or machined component whose connection end is cut with a tapered or parallel pipe thread, allowing it to be made up onto a matching pipe end or another fitting without welding. The two governing documents every buyer should have on hand are ASME B16.11 (which defines the pressure class, dimensional envelope, and tolerances for forged fittings, both socket-weld and threaded) and ASME B1.20.1 (which defines the NPT taper pipe thread used in North America).
Threaded fittings sit inside a much larger family of pipe fittings that also includes butt-weld (BW) elbows, tees, reducers, caps, and stub ends for high-pressure welded systems, and socket-weld (SW) fittings for the small-bore range where threading is not required. Knowing which connection type belongs where is the single biggest cost and reliability lever a buyer can pull.
Threaded joints are the lowest-cost, fastest-to-install option for non-critical, low-to-medium pressure service, and they are deliberately removable, which is why they dominate instrument-air manifolds, sample lines, chemical injection quills, glycol loops, lube-oil headers, and small-bore fire-sprinkler risers. They also appear in plumbing, HVAC, and gas distribution where inspection and periodic maintenance are routine.
That said, threaded joints have well-documented limitations. The thread root is a stress concentrator, so thermal cycling and vibration can walk a threaded joint toward fatigue leakage. They are not recommended for:
For these services, a butt-weld or flanged connection is the right call. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL supplies all three families from a single mill so a buyer can mix connection types on one purchase order without juggling three different vendors.
ASME B16.11 defines four pressure class ratings for forged fittings. Threaded fittings are made in Class 2000, Class 3000, and Class 6000 (Class 9000 is socket-weld only). The class number approximates the non-shock cold working pressure rating in psi at temperatures between -29 °C and 38 °C, with derating curves for higher temperatures.
| Pressure Class | Approx. CWP @ 38 °C (psi) | Typical Service | Common Sizes (NPS) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Class 2000 | 2,000 | Low-pressure water, air, gas, fire protection | 1/2" – 4" |
| Class 3000 | 3,000 | General process, hydraulic, steam condensate, oil & gas distribution | 1/2" – 4" |
| Class 6000 | 6,000 | High-pressure hydraulic, chemical injection, high-pressure gas | 1/2" – 2" |
| Class 9000 | 9,000 (SW only) | Critical high-pressure welded service | 1/2" – 2" |
For most general-purpose industrial and instrumentation work, Class 3000 is the default. Class 2000 is common in fire protection and utility water, while Class 6000 is reserved for high-pressure hydraulic or chemical-injection duty.
Threaded fittings are not interchangeable across regions, and mixing thread forms is the single most common small-bore piping failure we see. Three families cover almost every industrial order:
An NPT male will physically start into a BSPT female but will bind and leak within hours, and a Class 3000 A105 elbow marked "NPT" but actually cut to BSPT can ruin a hydrotest. Always specify the thread standard on the purchase order, on the marking, and on the MTR.
Threaded fittings are produced from forged bar stock or ingots, which means they cover the same material pedigree as the pipe they connect to. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL stocks and supplies the following families:
| Material Family | Common Grades | Typical Service |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon steel | ASTM A105, ASTM A350 LF2 (low-temp) | General process, hydrocarbon, steam, fire water, refinery & petrochemical utility |
| Alloy steel | ASTM A182 F5, F11, F22, F91 | High-temperature boiler, power plant, refinery hydrocracker |
| Austenitic stainless | ASTM A182 F304/304L, F316/316L, F321, F347 | Chemical, food, pharma, marine, instrumentation |
| Duplex / super duplex | ASTM A182 F51, F55, F53 | Offshore, seawater, sour service, chloride-rich environments |
| Nickel alloy | ASTM B564 N04400 (Monel 400), N06600 (Inconel 600), N08825 (Incoloy 825) | Seawater, HF acid, high-temperature corrosive chemicals |
For buyers who are pairing threaded fittings with austenitic stainless steel pipe on chemical or hygienic lines, an F316L fitting with NPT threads gives a consistent, weld-free joint that can be broken down for cleaning or component swap-out.
Within the threaded family, eight core product shapes cover roughly 95% of small-bore piping. The table below is the working list we hand to new EPC buyers:
| Shape | Function | Common Pressure Class |
|---|---|---|
| 90° elbow | Direction change in same plane | 2000 / 3000 |
| 45° elbow | Offset / branch routing | 2000 / 3000 |
| Tee (equal / reducing) | Branch connection | 2000 / 3000 |
| Cross | Four-way branch (rare; consider two tees if avoidable) | 2000 / 3000 |
| Full / half coupling | Extend line, change size | 2000 / 3000 / 6000 |
| Cap | Permanent line termination | 2000 / 3000 / 6000 |
| Hex head plug / round head plug | Pressure-test point, drain, instrument port | 2000 / 3000 / 6000 |
| union (MSS SP-83) | Frequent-disconnect joint for maintenance | 2000 / 3000 |
Sizing runs typically from NPS 1/8" up to NPS 4" for Class 2000 / 3000, and NPS 1/2" to NPS 2" for Class 6000. Beyond NPS 4", threaded connections become impractical because the wall thickness required for a sound thread gets too heavy and the make-up torque becomes unworkable in the field. That is the point at which the same material moves over to a flanged or butt-weld connection.
Even a perfect A105 Class 3000 fitting will leak if it is not made up correctly. The three rules below are the ones our QA team repeats on every audit:
Stainless-on-stainless threaded joints have a hidden enemy: galling. Choose galling-resistant alloys (F316L over F304 where possible), use a PTFE-based thread sealant rather than metal-to-metal dry make-up, and always use a strap wrench. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL can pre-ship fittings with a factory-applied anti-seize compound on request.
Every threaded fitting leaving a serious mill carries documentation, and that documentation is your warranty when an inspector shows up. Ask for, and verify:
On the receiving dock, do not accept a fitting that is missing any of the above. A Class 3000 elbow with no class stamp is not a Class 3000 elbow until the paperwork proves it.
One of the hidden costs of small-bore piping is the number of line items it takes to actually build a system. A typical Class 3000 small-bore train might call for threaded fittings, matching gasket stud bolt nut sets at the flanged transitions, an isolation industrial valve or two, and matching pipe in the same material. Sourcing those from four vendors means four MTR sets, four delivery windows, four points of failure.
EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL ships threaded fittings, butt-weld fittings, socket-weld fittings, flanges, gaskets, stud bolts, and industrial valves — plus carbon, stainless, and alloy pipe — from one Changsha mill complex with project-level inventory holding and consolidated MTR packages. The practical effect is shorter schedules, single-point accountability, and one call when a fitting is short, wrong, or in question.
A short, focused RFQ gets faster, more accurate quotations and avoids the most common shipping-floor surprises. Send this list:
If you only have 30 seconds, the table below is the working rule-of-thumb for matching service to fitting:
| Service | Recommended Fitting | Material | Class |
|---|---|---|---|
| Instrument air, plant air | Threaded elbow, tee, union | A105 or F316L | 3000 |
| Fire protection mains | Threaded elbow, tee, coupling | A105 (UL / FM listed where required) | 2000 |
| Low-pressure steam condensate | Threaded elbow, tee | A105 | 3000 |
| Natural gas distribution | Threaded elbow, tee, union | A105 or A350 LF2 | 3000 |
| Chemical dosing / injection | Threaded tee, hex plug | F316L | 3000 / 6000 |
| Seawater cooling, marine | Threaded elbow, tee | F51 / F55 duplex or copper-nickel | 3000 |
| High-pressure hydraulic | Threaded elbow, tee, coupling | A105 (carbon) or F316L | 6000 |
Threaded fittings are small, dense, and easy to ship in volume — which is exactly why the market is crowded with trading houses that buy from one mill, mark up, and resell. A mill-direct relationship gives you four things the trading house cannot:
