Threaded Pipe Fittings: A Practical Guide to Types, Standards, and Sourcing for Industrial Piping
How engineers and procurement teams can specify the right threaded fitting for pressure, temperature, and service conditions
Among the three dominant joining methods used in industrial piping, threaded fittings are often the fastest to install and the easiest to dismantle, but they are also the easiest to misapply. Choose the wrong thread standard, the wrong pressure class, or the wrong material and you will see leaks at startup, failures during hydrostatic test, or corrosion damage within the first 18 months. This guide walks through where threaded fittings make sense, the international standards that govern them, and how to source them as part of a complete piping package.
Where Threaded Fittings Make Sense in an Industrial System
Threaded connections use a tapered or parallel screw thread to compress a male and female joint together, creating a metal-to-metal seal that is often assisted by thread sealant. They are the dominant joining method for small-bore, low to medium pressure service lines — instrument air, utility water, lube oil, chemical injection, fire protection branch lines, and hydraulic piping around compressors and pumps.
Compared with butt weld fittings and socket weld fittings, threaded joints require no hot work, no welder qualification, and no NDT after installation. That makes them ideal for field tie-ins, plant modifications, and emergency repairs in operating facilities. The trade-off is that they are limited in size (typically NPS 1/2 through NPS 4) and in pressure class (Class 2000, 3000, and 6000 under ASME B16.11). Above that, welded connections become both safer and more economical.
When used correctly inside their design envelope, threaded joints are perfectly reliable. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL has supplied forged threaded fittings to power plant auxiliary systems, refinery instrument air, and offshore chemical injection skids for more than 30 years, alongside our carbon steel pipe, stainless steel pipe, and pipe flanges programs.
The Main Types of Threaded Fittings You Will Spec
Although the catalog of threaded shapes is long, the following six families cover the majority of industrial applications. Knowing the role of each one is the foundation of a good specification.
1. 90° and 45° Threaded Elbows
Threaded elbows change the direction of flow in a run. The 90° elbow is the workhorse for routing around equipment, while the 45° elbow is used to build up a large-radius offset or to drop a vertical line. Both are produced as forged pieces per ASME B16.11, with male (NPT or BSP) threads on both ends. Choose Class 3000 for general service, Class 6000 for high-pressure hydraulic and steam service.
2. Threaded Tees and Crosses
Threaded tees split flow into two branches, while crosses split it into three. They are used at instrument connections, drain and vent points, and header drop-outs. In a properly designed pipe fittings network, the branch connection should always be reinforced, and the run should use the same pressure class as the header.
3. Threaded Couplings and Half-Couplings
Full couplings join two threaded pipes of the same size, while half-couplings are welded to a header or vessel to provide a single threaded outlet for instruments, gauges, or drains. Half-couplings must be welded by a qualified procedure because they carry the full system pressure into the branch.
4. Threaded Unions
A union is the only threaded fitting that allows disconnection and reconnection without cutting the pipe. It uses a three-piece design with a threaded nut that draws the two halves together on a metal seat. Unions are essential at equipment nozzles, filter housings, and instrument manifolds where periodic maintenance is expected.
5. Threaded Bushings, Hex Nipples, and Pipe Caps
Bushings reduce a threaded opening to a smaller size; hex nipples (also called hex nipples or hose nipples) connect two female ends in tight spaces; caps close off a threaded outlet that is not yet in service. Together, these are the small hardware items that make a piping layout work, but they must match the same pressure class as the rest of the run.
6. Threaded Plugs and Square Head Plugs
Plugs close a female threaded opening permanently or for pressure testing. They should be marked with the same material grade as the fitting body so they do not become a weak point during hydrotest or future modification.
Thread Standards: NPT, BSP, and ISO 7-1 Explained
The most common reason a threaded fitting leaks is a thread standard mismatch. A fitting that is described as "1 inch" in your datasheet can be NPT, BSPT, BSPP, NPTF, or ISO 7-1, and the threads are not interchangeable. The table below summarizes the standards you will encounter most often.
| Standard | Region | Thread Form | Sealing Method | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ANSI/ASME B1.20.1 (NPT) | North America | Tapered | Thread deformation plus sealant | General industrial, oil & gas, fire protection |
| ANSI/ASME B1.20.3 (NPTF) | North America | Dryseal tapered | Metal-to-metal without sealant | Hydraulic, high-pressure instrumentation |
| ISO 7-1 (Rc, Rp, R) | Europe / international | Tapered (Rc, R) and parallel (Rp) | Thread plus sealant or bonded gasket | Process plants, marine, water treatment |
| BS 21 (BSPT, BSPP) | UK, Commonwealth, Asia | Tapered (BSPT) and parallel (BSPP) | Thread plus sealant or bonded washer | Plumbing, light industrial, fire systems |
| ASME B1.13M (Metric) | Global | Parallel ISO metric | O-ring or bonded washer | Instruments, OEM equipment |
EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL can supply threaded fittings to any of the above standards. Each fitting is marked with the standard, size, material grade, and pressure class so your QA team can confirm the right thread was shipped to site.
Pressure Class, Material, and Service Envelope
ASME B16.11 defines three pressure classes for forged threaded fittings: Class 2000, Class 3000, and Class 6000. These classes are the safe working pressure at the design temperature of the material, with a built-in corrosion and thread engagement allowance. Material grade is the second decision and is just as important as the pressure class.
| Material (ASTM) | Equivalent UNS | Typical Service | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| A105 Carbon Steel | K03504 | General hydrocarbon, steam, water up to 425 °C | Not for corrosive media |
| A350 LF2 | K03011 | Low-temperature service down to -46 °C | Limited high-temperature strength |
| A182 F304 / F304L | S30400 / S30403 | Corrosive chemicals, food and pharma utilities | Not for chloride-rich environments |
| A182 F316 / F316L | S31600 / S31603 | Marine, chemical, offshore injection | Higher cost than carbon steel |
| A182 F11 / F22 | K11597 / K21590 | High-temperature alloy service, refineries | Pre-heating required for welding |
| A182 F51 / F55 (Duplex) | S31803 / S32760 | Sour service, seawater, chloride pitting | Special thread lubrication, NACE required |
A good rule of thumb is to match the fitting material to the pipe material. Pairing stainless steel fittings with carbon steel pipe in a water service line will create galvanic corrosion at every joint. If you have a mixed-material run, isolate the two with a dielectric union or use flanged transitions instead.
Installation Best Practices That Prevent 90% of Threaded-Joint Failures
Even the right fitting will fail if it is installed poorly. The following five practices are the difference between a leak-free system and one that drips from the day it is commissioned.
1. Inspect threads before assembly. Reject any fitting with nicked, galled, or dirty threads. A damaged thread cannot be sealed by adding more sealant.
2. Use the right sealant for the service. PTFE tape is fine for water and air. For hydrocarbons, steam, and chemicals, use a paste sealant rated for the fluid and temperature (for example, Loctite 567 for steam, or a methacrylate paste for hydrocarbons).
3. Hand-tighten plus a controlled number of turns. After hand-tight, an additional 2 to 4 turns with a strap wrench is typical for NPT sizes up to 2 inches. Over-tightening splits the female fitting.
4. Support the line. Threaded joints are not designed to carry bending loads. Use pipe hangers, saddles, or U-bolts every 2 to 3 meters, and at every change of direction.
5. Pressure test before insulation. A 1.5x hydrostatic test for 30 minutes, per ASME B31.3, will reveal under-tightened joints before they are hidden behind cladding.
Sourcing Threaded Fittings as Part of a Bundled Piping Package
The fastest way to create a documentation headache is to source threaded fittings from one vendor, pipes from a second, and flanges from a third. MTRs, pressure class, and material traceability do not line up, and a single failed fitting can delay an entire plant shutdown.
EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL solves this by delivering the full pipe fittings package — threaded, socket weld, and butt weld fittings, plus pipes, flanges, gaskets, stud bolts, and valves — from one ISO 9001 certified facility in Changsha, China. Our 480,000+ ton annual capacity and 30+ years of export experience mean that a single purchase order covers everything from a Class 6000 NPT half-coupling to a full heat exchanger tube bundle.
Every fitting is delivered with full material traceability, EN 10204 3.1 mill test reports, dimensional reports, and, where required, NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 certificates. For special service such as sour hydrocarbons, subsea, or LNG, our engineering team can review your datasheet and recommend the right material, thread standard, and pressure class before production starts.
