In an industry dominated by welded and flanged connections, threaded fittings remain the most economical and fastest-to-install option for small-bore, low-to-medium pressure service. For instrument air lines, utility water, fire protection loops, and skid-mounted modules, a properly selected and sealed NPT or BSP joint can deliver decades of reliable service — without the cost, equipment, and certification burden of on-site welding.
EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL has supplied forged threaded fittings alongside pipe fittings in carbon steel, stainless steel, and alloy grades since 1994, with annual capacity above 480,000 tons. That volume gives the engineering team a working knowledge of what fails in the field — and what does not.
Before requesting a quotation, lock down three standard references. They will resolve most of the ambiguity between regional buyers and mill stock.
One important reminder: NPT and BSPT are not interchangeable. The thread angle, pitch, and tolerance are different, and forcing them together creates a joint that feels tight but leaks under thermal cycling.
Forged threaded fittings are produced in three pressure classes defined by ASME B16.11. The class does not change the thread — it changes the wall thickness, and therefore the pressure rating at a given temperature.
| Class | Common Service | Typical NPS Range |
|---|---|---|
| 2000 | Low-pressure water, air, drainage | 1/8" – 4" |
| 3000 | General process, utility, instrument air, fire protection | 1/8" – 4" |
| 6000 | High-pressure gas, hydraulic, critical process | 1/8" – 4" |
Threaded joints are practical up to NPS 4. Beyond that, the wall thickness required to maintain the pressure class makes the fitting heavy and difficult to make up by hand. For larger diameters, EZ STEEL supplies butt weld fittings in matching materials and schedules, which is the standard approach for high-pressure lines.
Material is where most field problems are born or avoided. Choose the lowest-cost material that meets both the corrosion and the temperature requirement — and verify weld compatibility if the threaded fitting is welded into a larger piping run.
ASTM A105 Carbon Steel
The default for Class 2000/3000 threaded fittings in non-corrosive service — water, steam, oil, air. Good up to roughly 425 °C (795 °F) per ASME B16.11.
ASTM A182 F304 / F316 Stainless
Specified for chemical, food, marine, and pharmaceutical lines. Pairs naturally with stainless steel pipe in ASTM A312 / A269 grades to keep the galvanic series consistent.
ASTM A182 F11 / F22 / F5 Alloy
Used for elevated-temperature service in power plants and refineries, typically alongside pressure tubes in ASTM A335 grades.
Copper-Nickel 90/10 & 70/30
Reserved for seawater cooling and shipboard systems. EZ STEEL stocks matching Cu-Ni flanges and butt-weld fittings so the entire seawater loop is metallurgically consistent.
A leaking threaded joint is almost never a material problem. It is one of three installation issues: damaged threads, wrong sealant, or over-torque. The procedure below addresses all three.
The economics of threaded joints break down quickly outside their design envelope. Switch to welded or flanged connections when any of the following apply:
In those cases, EZ STEEL pairs forged fittings with industrial valves and flanged connections in the same material family, so the entire loop — pipe, fitting, flange, gasket, stud bolt, valve — is supplied as one consistent package.
A complete RFQ saves both buyer and supplier about a week of clarification emails. Send the following with every inquiry:
Most threaded fitting failures during commissioning are not the fitting itself — they are the result of mixing material families, inconsistent threading, or missed documentation. Bundling threaded fittings, line pipe, flanges, gaskets, and industrial valves from one supplier removes that risk and shortens the inspection cycle.
EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL has supplied that bundled scope since 1994 to projects including the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, the West-East Gas Pipeline, petrochemical plant piping, and marine vessel systems. Every shipment is backed by API, EN, and ASME certifications, with mill test certificates released at the same time as the material.
