From material selection and bending radius to inspection and bundle supply — how procurement teams specify U-bend tubes that survive real plant conditions, written from a manufacturer's perspective.
In a shell-and-tube heat exchanger, the U-bend is the small component that decides whether the bundle lasts 5 years or 25. Each bend has to absorb thermal expansion, tolerate vibration, resist the process fluid, and still allow the bundle to be pulled for cleaning. Buyers who treat U bend tubes as a commodity line item usually end up with field leaks inside the first turnaround. Buyers who treat them as engineered components — and source them from a mill that controls the entire process from billet to hydrostatic test — get predictable service life.
EZ Steel Industrial has been producing U-bend tubes since 1994, with an annual output north of 480,000 tonnes of pipe, tube, fittings, flanges and industrial valves from a single Changsha base. The walkthrough below reflects what we actually do on the shop floor, not a generic textbook summary.
Material selection drives everything downstream — bend method, minimum radius, heat treatment, NDT scope and final price. A U-bend in austenitic stainless steel and a U-bend in titanium may look identical on paper, but the bending window, tool steel and dwell times are completely different.
Spec tip: when you send an RFQ, name the standard (e.g. "ASTM A213 TP316L") plus the operating fluid, design temperature and design pressure. Three extra lines on the datasheet save a back-and-forth email chain and remove the risk of a mill quoting the wrong grade.
"U-bend" is one word, but the bending process is a choice between mandrel bending, rotary draw bending, induction bending and cold push bending. The wrong method on thick-wall austenitic tube gives you wrinkles on the intrados and wall thinning on the extrados — both of which fail the hydraulic test or, worse, fail in service.
| Tube OD × Wall (typical) | Recommended Bending Method | Minimum Bend Radius (CLR) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9.53–25.4 mm × 0.7–2.0 mm (small-bore) | Mandrel / rotary draw, cold | 1.5 × OD | Standard for instrument and small process exchangers. |
| 25.4–50.8 mm × 2.0–3.9 mm (mid-range) | Mandrel with wiper die, cold | 1.5–2.0 × OD | Most common range for refinery and chemical service. |
| 50.8–88.9 mm × 4.0–8.0 mm (thick wall) | Induction bending (hot) | 2.5–3.0 × OD | Heating narrow band with induction coil, then push-bend. Used for power and offshore. |
| 88.9 mm and above | Induction bending or welded return bend | 3.0 × OD or larger | Welded return is preferred when wall thickness makes bending impractical. |
On our shop floor we run CNC mandrel benders for the small and mid-range tubes (covering roughly 90% of heat efficiency tubes orders) and a medium-frequency induction bender for the heavy-wall jobs. Both paths are supported by laser templating so the bend angle, tangent length and CLR are verified before heat treatment.
Most RFQ documents list "bending" as a single line. On the mill, that one line is actually five controlled steps, and any of them can ruin the tube if rushed.
U-bend tubes are not a free-form product. The standards you cite on the datasheet determine what inspection, documentation and traceability the mill is obligated to provide. The most common ones we work against:
Most procurement teams also reference TEMA on the tube side and gasket stud bolt nut packages on the shell side, which we can supply from the same mill order to keep documentation consistent.
A real shell-and-tube exchanger is more than tubes. Tube sheets, baffles, tie rods, pipe flanges, gaskets, stud bolts and the matching industrial valves all arrive on site together — and any mismatch in material, schedule or documentation between the tubes and the rest of the package is a fabrication delay. EZ Steel Industrial ships U-bend tubes as a stand-alone product, or bundled with the rest of the heat-exchanger kit. Typical bundle contents:
Single-mill supply is the simplest way to collapse the documentation list from 12 PDFs to one consolidated MTC pack, and to keep the heat numbers consistent across tubes, fittings and flanges.
A datasheet with these eight lines lets us turn a quote around in 24–48 hours instead of a week of clarification emails. Most of our repeat buyers keep a standard template in their procurement system and just fill in the variables per project.
EZ Steel Industrial supplies U-bend tubes, straight tubes, flanges, fittings, gaskets and valves from one factory in Changsha, China, with API, EN, ASME, AWS and ISO 9001 certifications. Send us your tube datasheet and we will return a full mill quote with bend method, heat treatment plan, inspection scope and MTC format within two working days.
