If you have ever looked at a steel-framed building, a bridge, or an industrial plant and wondered what actually carries the load, the answer is often a family of products called hollow sections. Among them, EN10210 steel hollow sections are among the most widely specified in European and international structural engineering. This article explains what they are, how they are made, and where they are used in real projects.
EN 10210 is the European standard for hot-finished structural hollow sections made from non-alloy and fine-grain structural steels. In simple terms, a hollow section is a steel tube with a closed cross-section that is used to carry loads in a structure. The standard covers three main shapes: circular hollow sections (CHS), square hollow sections (SHS), and rectangular hollow sections (RHS).
The "hot-finished" part is what sets this standard apart. The sections are formed while the steel is still at high temperature, which relieves internal residual stresses and creates a uniform, recrystallized grain structure across the cross-section. The result is a product with excellent toughness, consistent mechanical properties, and dependable behavior under dynamic and low-temperature loads.
EN 10210 uses the EN 10025 designation system. The letter S stands for structural steel, the number indicates the minimum yield strength in megapascals, and the suffix describes impact testing and product form. For example, S355J2H means a structural steel with a minimum yield strength of 355 MPa, impact-tested at -20°C, supplied as a hollow section.
Common grades include S235JRH, S275J0H, S275J2H, and S355J2H. For heavy loads, high-rise buildings, and critical infrastructure, S355J2H is the usual choice. For lighter structures, S235JRH or S275 grades are often sufficient and more economical.
Production starts with billets heated to roughly 1100-1250°C, which are then rolled into the required circular, square, or rectangular profile. The sections are straightened, cut to length, and inspected for dimensions, surface quality, and mechanical properties. Because forming happens at high temperature, the finished product has low residual stress and uniform mechanical properties throughout, which is why hot-finished sections are preferred for demanding structural work.
EN10210 steel hollow sections are used wherever a structure must carry significant loads while keeping its own weight low. Typical applications include:
Square and rectangular sections, with their high bending stiffness, are often chosen for columns and beams. Circular sections, with their uniform stress distribution and good torsional performance, are common in trusses and members that see forces from several directions. These products sit at the core of the structure works category for many piping suppliers.
Selection depends on the load condition, service temperature, and budget. For dynamic loads, low temperatures, or safety-critical structures, hot-finished EN 10210 sections are the safer choice. For cost-sensitive general construction, cold-formed EN 10219 sections may be sufficient. Always specify both the standard and the grade, such as EN 10210 S355J2H, because the same grade name means different things under the two standards.
When sourcing EN10210 steel hollow sections for a project, look for a supplier with documented quality control, mill test certificates, and experience with international standards. EZ Steel Industrial Co., Ltd. has supplied structural steel piping for more than three decades, with manufacturing and stocking facilities in Cangzhou, Yangzhou, and Lishui. The company operates under ISO 9001 quality management, holds API 5L and API 5CT product certification, and follows PED requirements for European projects. Every order is backed by more than a dozen quality checkpoints, hydrostatic and ultrasonic testing, positive material identification, and full mill test certificates.
A manufacturer that can supply the full piping package, including fittings, flanges, and fasteners, also simplifies procurement and keeps the project on schedule.
EN10210 steel hollow sections are a dependable, high-performance choice for structural engineering. Understanding what they are, how they are made, and where they fit in your project will help you specify the right product the first time.
