Long-distance oil transportation is one of the most demanding services in the pipeline industry. Crude oil is heavy, often corrosive, and has to be pushed across thousands of kilometers through deserts, permafrost, mountains, river crossings, and offshore stretches. The pipe that carries it must hold internal pressure, resist external corrosion, survive ground movement, and remain weldable in the field. For many projects in Russia, Central Asia, the Middle East, and the CIS region, GOST 20295 steel pipe is the specification that designers reach for, and it is the standard we follow when supplying pipeline works products to trunk-line contractors.
GOST 20295-85 is the Russian interstate standard for steel welded straight-seam and spiral-seam pipes intended for main oil, gas, and oil-product pipelines, as well as for field and process lines that feed them. It applies to diameters from 114 mm up to 1420 mm, and to wall thicknesses that are matched to the design pressure of the line. The standard covers both electric-resistance welded (ERW) and submerged-arc welded (SAW, including spiral) products, and it allows supplementary requirements for sour service where the crude contains H₂S.
In practical terms, a GOST 20295 pipe leaves the mill with:
This is the documentation that EPC contractors and pipeline operators rely on when they sign off a lot for an export or a long-haul line.
Long-distance crude oil lines are not the same as refinery or process piping. They run at moderate to high pressure over very long distances, they cross climate zones, and the cost of a failure is measured in lost production, environmental cleanup, and regulatory exposure. GOST 20295 was written with exactly this service in mind.
Main oil pipelines in the 500–1500 km range are commonly designed for operating pressures between 4.0 MPa and 9.8 MPa, depending on the crude and the pump stations. GOST 20295 grades such as K52, K55, K60, and K65 give the designer a clear yield-strength ladder to work with. Combined with the wall-thickness options in the standard, the engineer can optimize the pipe for the pressure class of the line without over-specifying material and adding unnecessary weight to the right-of-way.
A single pipeline can cross frozen tundra and then climb into a hot desert in the same year of operation. GOST 20295 calls for Charpy V-notch impact tests on the base metal and on the weld, with categories defined for service temperatures down to −60 °C. For tropical or desert routes, the same grades retain stable mechanical properties well above 100 °C of operating temperature, which matters when the pipe is laid above ground or inside an uninsulated casing.
Many of the crude streams carried by long-distance lines contain dissolved H₂S, CO₂, salts, and water. GOST 20295 is paired with supplementary GOST requirements (such as the "S" category) that restrict hardness, require HIC and SSC testing where applicable, and set rules for hardness surveys on the weld. When combined with an external coating (3LPE, 3LPP, or FBE) and a cathodic-protection system, the line is engineered to give decades of service.
For very long trunk lines, big diameter steel pipe in the 720–1420 mm range is the most economic choice because it lowers flow velocity and reduces pressure drop per kilometer. GOST 20295 supports both longitudinal (LSAW) and spiral (SSAW / HSAW) welded pipes in this range. LSAW is typically selected for the largest diameters and the highest pressure classes, while spiral pipe is widely used for mid-range diameters where the mill can deliver long lengths with consistent geometry.
Based on what we supply to EPCs and pipeline operators, GOST 20295 pipe is used in four main roles inside a long-distance oil system:
The cross-country line itself is the most visible application. The pipe is delivered in double-jointed or triple-jointed lengths to reduce field-welding time, lowered into the ditch, and joined by manual or automatic welding. The combination of consistent geometry, controlled chemistry, and tested weld seams is what allows a contractor to maintain a high daily welding rate while still meeting the project's radiographic-acceptance criteria.
Pump stations, intermediate manifolds, and storage tank farms tie into the main line with smaller-diameter GOST 20295 pipe, typically in the 114–530 mm range. Here, the same standard is used because operators want one documentation system, one welding procedure, and one spare-parts inventory for the entire station.
Directional-drilled and trenchless crossings put extra demands on the pipe: higher external load from the reamed hole, longer unsupported spans, and stricter limits on ovality. GOST 20295 pipes with documented dimensional tolerance, along with supplementary factory hydrostatic and hardness testing, are routinely qualified for these crossings.
Gathering lines that bring crude from a field to the main trunk, and lateral lines that distribute to refineries or export terminals, are typically built to the same GOST family. Using one standard from the wellhead to the export terminal simplifies material traceability and operator training.
A GOST 20295 line pipe is a long-term asset, so the specification review at the inquiry stage is where most project risk is removed. We recommend that buyers confirm the following points in the technical annex of the purchase order:
A clear specification at this stage avoids costly re-testing, schedule slips, and field rejections.
EZ Steel Industrial is a manufacturer and integrated supplier of industrial metal piping systems. Our three production locations cover the supply chain that GOST 20295 line pipe typically needs:
We supply GOST 20295 pipes together with the full project package that a long-distance oil line requires: pipe fittings, pipe flanges, gaskets and stud bolts, and industrial valves, all traceable to the same documentation system. Mill test certificates, third-party inspection (SGS, BV, TUV, or customer-nominated), and multilingual export documents are standard.
From the projects we have shipped, a few practical points are worth keeping in mind when planning a long-distance line:
Long-distance oil transportation is unforgiving on materials. A line that runs for 30 or 40 years across permafrost, river crossings, and populated areas has to be specified conservatively, manufactured consistently, and documented thoroughly. GOST 20295 gives the pipeline industry a well-proven framework for exactly that, and it remains one of the specifications we recommend for trunk-line crude oil projects in Russia, the CIS, the Middle East, and similar markets.
If you are working on a long-distance oil pipeline, an export terminal, or a feeder line, share your datasheet with our team at export@ezsteelpipe.com or call +86 731 8870 6116. We will review the line class, recommend the right GOST 20295 grade and weld type, and provide a mill-aligned quotation with the testing and documentation your project requires.
