GB/T 5310 is the Chinese national standard for seamless steel tubes and pipes used in high-pressure boilers, high-pressure steam pipelines, and other high-temperature pressure service. When engineers and procurement teams select material for power plant boilers, petrochemical heaters, or heat efficiency tubes, the dimensional and tolerance requirements in GB/T 5310 directly determine whether the tube will fit the welding groove, survive the forming operation, and meet the inspection acceptance. This guide explains the diameter, wall, length, weight, straightness, and roundness tolerances defined in the current GB/T 5310-2023 edition, and shows how to align them with your project specification.
GB/T 5310 tubes are normally installed in boiler tubing and condenser tube assemblies that operate above 400 °C and under sustained internal pressure. A wall that is too thin reduces the calculated stress margin; a diameter that drifts out of tolerance prevents a proper fit-up with the matching pipe fittings and flanges. Tight tolerance control is therefore not a quality-of-life issue but a safety, weldability, and interchangeability requirement.
The standard recognizes two tolerance levels: Ordinary (the default commercial level) and Advanced (a tighter level used when the buyer specifies it in the order). Both levels are tied to the manufacturing route, so a hot-rolled tube and a cold-drawn tube of the same nominal size will have different tolerance bands.
GB/T 5310 tubes are normally delivered to nominal outside diameter (D) and nominal wall thickness (S). When the buyer requires it, delivery can also be on the basis of nominal outside diameter and minimum wall thickness, or nominal inside diameter and nominal wall thickness. The tolerance that applies depends on whether the tube is hot-rolled / hot-extruded (W-H), hot-expanded, or cold-rolled / cold-drawn (W-C).
For hot-finished tubes, the standard distinguishes between small, medium, and large diameters. The Ordinary and Advanced tolerances are listed below.
| Dimension (D or S), mm | Ordinary Tolerance | Advanced Tolerance |
|---|---|---|
| D < 57 | ±0.40 mm | ±0.30 mm |
| D 57 – 325, S ≤ 35 | ±0.75 % D | ±0.50 % D |
| D 57 – 325, S > 35 | ±1 % D | ±0.75 % D |
| D > 325 – 600 | −2 % D to +1 % D, or +5 mm, whichever is less | — |
| D > 600 | −2 % D to +1 % D, or +7 mm, whichever is less | — |
| S ≤ 4.0 | ±0.45 mm | ±0.40 mm |
| S > 4.0 – 20 | −10 % S to +12.5 % S | ±10 % S |
| S > 20, D < 219 | ±10 % S | ±7.5 % S |
| S > 20, D ≥ 219 | −10 % S to +12.5 % S | ±10 % S |
For hot-expanded tubes, GB/T 5310 fixes the outside-diameter tolerance at ±1 % D (Ordinary) or ±0.75 % D (Advanced), and the wall-thickness tolerance at −10 % S to +15 % S (Ordinary) or −10 % S to +12.5 % S (Advanced).
Cold-finished tubes are typically used for small-diameter heat exchanger tube and instrument lines, where tighter geometry is needed.
| Dimension (D or S), mm | Ordinary Tolerance | Advanced Tolerance |
|---|---|---|
| D ≤ 25.4 | ±0.15 mm | — |
| D > 25.4 – 40 | ±0.20 mm | — |
| D > 40 – 50 | ±0.25 mm | — |
| D > 50 – 60 | ±0.30 mm | — |
| D > 60 | ±0.5 % D | — |
| S ≤ 3.0 | ±0.30 mm | ±0.20 mm |
| S > 3.0 | ±10 % S | ±7.5 % S |
When the order specifies a minimum wall thickness (Smin), the deviation is one-sided positive only. The acceptable ranges are:
Because the deviation is one-sided, the minimum wall thickness approach gives designers a guaranteed structural thickness for pressure and creep calculations.
The standard treats the inside-diameter tolerance differently from the outside-diameter tolerance. For hot-expanded tubes, the nominal inside-diameter deviation is ±0.75 % d. For all other manufacturing routes, the nominal inside-diameter deviation is ±1 % d. This wider band is normal because the inside diameter is a derived dimension, controlled indirectly through the outside diameter and wall thickness.
GB/T 5310 tubes are normally supplied in random lengths between 4 000 mm and 12 000 mm. When fixed length is ordered, the deviation is 0 to +15 mm for D ≤ 325 mm and 0 to +30 mm for D > 325 mm. For double (cut) length, the cut allowance is 5 to 10 mm per cut for D ≤ 159 mm and 10 to 15 mm per cut for D > 159 mm.
When delivery is by actual weight, the deviation from theoretical weight is ±10 % for a single tube and ±7.5 % for lots of 10 t or more. Straightness per meter is limited to 1.5 mm/m for S ≤ 15 mm, 2.0 mm/m for 15 mm < S ≤ 30 mm, and 3.0 mm/m for S > 30 mm. For tubes with D ≥ 127 mm, the total-length straightness shall not exceed 0.10 % of the tube length.
Out-of-roundness, also called ovality, shall not exceed 80 % of the applicable outside- or inside-diameter tolerance. Wall-thickness non-uniformity shall not exceed 80 % of the wall-thickness tolerance. These two limits are important during the assembly of pipe fittings and headers, where concentricity and uniform wall directly influence the weld preparation.
A complete dimensional and tolerance call-out on a purchase order should include: standard number and edition (GB/T 5310-2023), steel grade (for example 20G, 15CrMoG, 12Cr1MoVG, 10Cr9Mo1VNbN), delivery basis (nominal OD and nominal wall, or OD with minimum wall), manufacturing route (W-H or W-C), tolerance level (Ordinary or Advanced), length type (random, fixed, or double), and any supplementary hydrostatic or non-destructive test requirement. Adding these six items up front reduces clarification rounds and shortens the mill lead time.
As a manufacturer and integrated supplier, EZ Steel Industrial can produce GB/T 5310 tubes with custom outside diameter, wall thickness, heat treatment, and full non-destructive testing options. Project buyers looking for GB/T 5310 steel tube in boiler, superheater, and heat-exchanger service can request the mill test certificate and the full dimensional report together with the order to confirm tolerance compliance before shipment.
