GOST 8732 is the Russian/CIS interstate standard for seamless hot-deformed steel tubes used in pressure systems, structural applications, and high-temperature service. Because procurement, engineering review, and inspection all rely on the same numbers, dimensional tolerances are the most often requested section of the standard. This guide breaks down the tolerance tables for outer diameter, wall thickness, length, straightness, and ovality, and explains what those numbers mean when you place an order or accept a shipment.
GOST 8732 applies to seamless hot-deformed steel tubes with outside diameters of 20 mm and larger and wall thicknesses of 2.5 mm and larger. It is used together with GOST 8731, which lists the technical requirements (steel grade, mechanical properties, testing, and delivery condition). When buyers and mills reference GOST 8732 seamless steel tubes, they almost always mean the size range defined in 8732 combined with the technical requirements of 8731.
The current revision is published in Russian; legacy revisions (GOST 8732-78) are still widely cited in older projects and procurement documents. Unless the buyer specifies "increased precision" (повышенная точность), the tolerances in this article are the "ordinary precision" (обычная точность) values that apply by default.
The outside diameter (OD) tolerance depends on the nominal OD range and on whether the order is for ordinary or increased precision. The table below summarises the values given in the standard:
| Outside Diameter, mm | Ordinary Precision Tolerance | Increased Precision Tolerance |
|---|---|---|
| 20 to 50 | ± 0.5 mm | ± 0.5 mm |
| Over 50 to 219 | ± 1.0 % | ± 0.8 % |
| Over 219 | ± 1.25 % | ± 1.0 % |
In practice this means that a 168.3 mm OD tube at ordinary precision is allowed to measure between 166.6 mm and 170.0 mm, while at increased precision it is allowed to measure between 167.0 mm and 169.6 mm. For diameters above 219 mm, a typical 325 mm OD tube at ordinary precision falls between 320.9 mm and 329.1 mm. These ranges are the first thing inspectors measure when they receive a shipment.
Wall thickness tolerances in GOST 8732 are expressed as a percentage of the nominal wall thickness. The applicable percentage depends on the wall thickness range and the manufacturing precision:
| Wall Thickness, mm | Ordinary Precision | Increased Precision |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5 to 15 | +12.5 % / -15.0 % | ±12.5 % |
| Over 15 to 30 | ±12.5 % | ±10.0 % |
| Over 30 to 45 | +10.0 % / -12.5 % | ±10.0 % |
A 10 mm wall at ordinary precision, for example, may range from 8.5 mm to 11.25 mm. For heavy-wall pipe, a 36 mm wall is allowed between 31.5 mm and 39.6 mm. Asymmetric tolerances are common in hot-rolling, where the inside diameter cannot be controlled as tightly as the outside.
GOST 8732 recognises three length categories:
In other words, the standard does not impose a minus tolerance on cut-to-length pipe; only an overrun is allowed. This is important for fabricators who pre-cut and who need to plan for the extra material.
The standard limits the curvature of any 1 m section of tube to no more than 1.5 mm for tubes with a wall thickness up to 20 mm, and 2.0 mm for tubes with a wall thickness over 20 mm. Ovality (the difference between the maximum and minimum OD measured in the same cross-section) is not expressed as a separate number in GOST 8732; it must fall within the OD tolerance band shown in Section 2. If a project needs tighter ovality — common for heat-exchanger U-bend tubes and machined pipe — it should be agreed as an additional requirement at the time of order.
Tolerances are not negotiated after production. They must be specified in the purchase order, because the mill sets up different rolling and sizing passes for ordinary versus increased precision. When preparing a request for quotation, include the following items so the offer matches the standard exactly:
If increased precision is required, expect the unit price to be higher and the delivery time longer, because the mill must use closer rolling passes and additional inline measurement.
When tubes arrive on site, the dimensional check is straightforward if the inspector uses the same conventions as the standard:
Does GOST 8732 apply to small-diameter tubes? No. Tubes below 20 mm OD or below 2.5 mm wall thickness fall under GOST 8734 (cold-deformed) or GOST 10704 (electric-welded).
Can I mix GOST 8732 dimensional tolerances with ASTM A106 or API 5L technical requirements? The dimensions stay with 8732; the chemical composition, mechanical properties, and testing should follow the ASTM or API specification agreed in the order. Many EPC projects use this combined approach.
Is ovality checked separately? It is captured within the OD tolerance. If the project needs a tighter ovality than the OD window allows, request it as an additional requirement.
Where can I get a certificate that lists all these values? A mill test certificate (MTC) issued to EN 10204 3.1 will state the actual measured dimensions alongside the chemical and mechanical results, and the inspector can compare them to the tolerance tables above.
Buyers who work with GOST 8732 often also need tubes to neighbouring standards. For pressure service the closest equivalents are ASTM A106/A106M seamless steel pipe and EN 10216-2 seamless tubes. For high-temperature alloy service, ASTM A335 alloy steel pipe is the usual counterpart. For structural and pile applications, ASTM A252 steel pipe piles and GOST 8732 seamless tubes for structural use are commonly referenced side by side.
GOST 8732 gives a clear, percentage-based tolerance system for the outside diameter, wall thickness, and length of seamless hot-deformed steel tubes, and a curvature limit that depends on the wall thickness. Ordinary precision is the default; increased precision tightens the OD and wall windows and should be requested at the time of order. Knowing these numbers before issuing a purchase order avoids the most common sources of rejection at goods-in inspection: OD measured out of band, wall thickness below the minus tolerance, fixed length delivered short, and ovality outside the agreed window.
