Low-pressure fluid-conveying GBT 3091 steel pipe is one of the most widely specified welded pipes in municipal, construction, fire protection and industrial service. When the pipe must resist corrosion or be exposed to moisture, it is normally supplied in a hot-dip galvanized condition. Understanding the galvanizing requirements of GB/T 3091 is essential for engineers, procurement teams and contractors who need to verify that delivered material really meets specification. This article breaks down the key coating, dimensional and testing requirements you should check before ordering.
Guo Biao/Tui Jian 3091, published as "welded steel pipes for low pressure fluid delivery," covers seam-welded round and square steel pipes used for water supply, gas supply, heating, fire fighting and general low-pressure fluid transmission. Typical service limits are a working temperature of no more than 200°C and a working pressure of no more than 1.6 MPa. The pipes are usually manufactured from carbon steel grades such as Q195, Q215 and Q235 (and up to Q345 for reinforced duties), and they may be supplied either plain or galvanized.
Because galvanizing directly affects corrosion life, the standard pays close attention to the quality of the zinc layer. This is why buyers need to specify the coating requirement clearly when ordering welded galvanized steel pipe.
The most important galvanizing requirement relates to the mass of zinc deposited onto the pipe surface. Under GB/T 3091, the total weight per unit area of the zinc coating on the inside and outside surfaces combined shall not be less than 300 g/m². Where a higher level of protection is needed, the supplier and buyer can negotiate a heavier coating, and the agreed value is documented in the contract. In practice, ordinary galvanized pipe commonly carries roughly 300 g/m², while heavier outdoor, marine or chemical-exposure duties may call for coating weights of 500 g/m² or more.
Because coating weight and coating thickness are directly related, many quality plans express the requirement as a minimum zinc layer thickness. Typical hot-dip galvanized pipe for low-pressure service carries a zinc layer of about 70 µm on smaller diameters (DN15–DN50) and about 85 µm on larger diameters (DN65–DN150). For extended outdoor life, a heavy coating of 100 µm or more is often specified.
A high total zinc weight is not enough on its own. GB/T 3091 requires the galvanized layer to be uniform, continuous and firmly bonded to the base steel. The surface must not show missing plating, bare spots, peeling, cracks or loose zinc powder. Uniformity is commonly verified by a copper sulfate immersion test, in which the coating must withstand a specified number of immersions without exposing bare steel. In many quality systems this is combined with visual inspection to confirm an even, smooth galvanized finish that offers reliable long-term corrosion protection.
Galvanizing upgrades the corrosion resistance of the pipe, but the underlying pipe still has to obey the dimensional rules of GB/T 3091. Galvanized round pipe is available from DN15 up to DN300 and beyond, with outer diameters following standard series such as 21.3, 26.9, 33.7 and 60.3 mm. Wall thickness is supplied in either standard or reinforced values, and the allowable deviation on wall thickness is typically +12%/-15% for standard wall and +10%/-12% for reinforced wall. The outer diameter allowance is about ±0.4 mm for sizes up to DN100 and about ±1% of the outer diameter for larger sizes.
To confirm that both the steel and the galvanized coating meet the specified requirements, a reputable supplier will perform hydrostatic testing, check the zinc coating weight and uniformity, and review the mill test certificate for the base material. For fire protection and pressure service, hydrostatic testing pressure is usually applied at about 1.5 times the working pressure and held for a set period, with no leakage allowed. Always request the mill test certificate together with the coating test results so the delivered lot can be traced back to its heat and production batch.
Specifying the right galvanizing requirement is only half the job; the other half is sourcing from a manufacturer that can actually deliver it. EZ Steel Industrial supplies galvanized and plain welded carbon steel pipe conforming to GB/T 3091, together with a full range of pipe fittings, flanges, gaskets, stud bolts and valves for complete pipeline works. With multi-location production, cooperative testing procedures and 12+ quality checkpoints, the company is positioned to bundle project supply with the technical documentation EPC contractors need. When you specify galvanizing, confirm the target zinc coating weight or thickness with your supplier and ask for the coating test report before delivery — this small step prevents expensive field failures and keeps corrosion protection on spec.
