ASTM A252 steel tubular piles are a workhorse of deep foundation work, used as permanent load-carrying members and as shells for cast-in-place concrete piles in bridges, ports, high-rise buildings, and industrial plants. The standard itself defines the chemical and mechanical requirements, but how a pipe is marked and coated decides whether the pile can be traced on site, survive handling, and stand up to the soil and water it sits in. This guide walks through the marking items inspectors expect to see on every A252 pipe, the coating systems that are most commonly specified, and how EZ Steel Industrial controls both ends of the process from production through delivery.
A252 covers three grades of nominal-wall cylindrical pipe piles: Grade 1 (205 MPa minimum yield), Grade 2 (240 MPa), and Grade 3 (310 MPa). Both welded (ERW, LSAW, SSAW) and seamless products are covered, and the standard is intentionally lean on corrosion protection so the project specification can pick the system that fits the ground conditions. That is where marking and coating become the two practical details that make or break a delivery.
Marking is not decoration. It is the only way a foreman at a piling rig can confirm that the pipe in front of him is the grade, heat, and size listed on the mill certificate, and it is the only way an engineer can tie a specific pile back to the original test report if a defect shows up years later. The ASTM A252 standard calls out the minimum marking items, and most project specifications add a few more. EZ Steel Industrial stamps every pipe with the following items, applied by low-stress dot-stencil or paint stencil so the markings survive handling, banding, and storage:
For project work, a color band on each end is often added to identify the grade at a glance. EZ Steel Industrial can apply project-specific color coding on request, including duplicate heat number tags attached to the pipe end for jobs that require full traceability through splicing and driving. Each bundle ships with a mill test certificate (MTC) that cross-references the heat numbers stenciled on the pipes. Buyers can also order API 5L line pipe or ASTM A53 companion pipe from the same mill, with the same marking discipline, when a project mixes piling with process or utility lines.
A252 does not mandate a coating – the standard assumes the buyer will select corrosion protection based on the service environment. EZ Steel Industrial supports the full range of options that piling contractors actually specify, and applies them in a controlled shop environment rather than in the field, which gives a more uniform film thickness and better adhesion than site-applied coatings.
For temporary works, soil with low corrosivity, or piles that will be fully encased in concrete, bare or mill-scale pipe is acceptable. In this case the protection strategy is end caps and careful storage, not a coating film. EZ Steel Industrial supplies plastic or metal end caps on every pipe by default to keep the bevels clean and the inside dry during transport.
Hot-dip galvanizing per ASTM A123 is a popular choice for small-diameter A252 piles used in light structures, sign gantries, and soil conditions with moderate moisture. The zinc layer sacrifices itself to protect the steel and gives a clean, uniform appearance. Galvanized A252 piles are commonly paired with ASTM A500 structural sections to keep the entire substructure on a single coating system.
FBE is the most common coating specified for permanent A252 piles in bridges, chemical plants, and urban infrastructure. A single- or double-layer FBE system, applied to a cleaned and heated pipe surface, gives strong adhesion, good chemical resistance, and the flexibility to survive handling and driving. Typical dry film thickness is 300–400 μm for standard service and up to 500–600 μm for aggressive soils. FBE handles temperatures up to about 110 °C in continuous service, which is plenty for the vast majority of piling applications.
For marine piling, jetty structures, and any pile that sits in salt water or aggressive soil, 3LPE (or 3LPP where higher temperatures are expected) is the go-to system. The structure is an FBE primer, a copolymer adhesive, and an extruded polyethylene top coat, giving a total thickness of about 2.0–3.0 mm. The mechanical resistance of the polyolefin outer layer protects the pipe during driving and against backfill impact, while the FBE primer bonds the system to the steel. 3LPE is also the preferred choice when the A252 pile is tied into a larger copper-nickel marine piping network or runs parallel to a cathodic protection system.
For buried piles in soil with stray currents or high bacterial activity, coal tar epoxy or bitumen-based wraps are still specified. They are economical, easy to repair in the field, and tolerate the slightly uneven surfaces that come from welded splices. The trade-off is a higher sensitivity to UV and a more limited temperature range, so they are usually restricted to fully buried sections.
When A252 piles are left hollow, the inside of the pipe is exposed to groundwater, condensation, and trapped air, and that is often where corrosion starts. EZ Steel Industrial can supply piles with an internal FBE lining, a concrete fill, or a closed-cell foam insert. The simplest and most common option is a flush internal FBE to 150–250 μm, which keeps the bore dry during storage and adds decades of service life in the splash zone.
Marking and coating work only if the pipe reaches the site undamaged. Two practical items complete the specification:
Lifting points should use nylon slings rather than chains when the pipe is coated, and any drag marks should be touched up with the same coating system before driving. These small steps are what separate a 50-year foundation from a 15-year one.
A clean specification removes ambiguity and protects both sides of the contract. The minimum order information for A252 pipe piles, including marking and coating requirements, should include:
Submitting this list up front lets the mill confirm availability, lock in production slots, and produce a clean documentation package. EZ Steel Industrial's team can also recommend the right combination of grade, weld type, and coating for the soil and water profile of a specific project, drawing on past deliveries to bridges, ports, petrochemical plants, and the South-to-North Water Diversion and West-East Gas Pipeline programs.
A foundation package rarely stops at the pile itself. A port project might combine A252 piles with carbon steel flanges and gaskets for tie-back connections, while a power plant foundation might run A252 piles next to GB 5310 alloy steel tubes for boiler connections. Buying the whole package from one manufacturer gives consistent marking, the same coating system across components, one set of mill certificates, and a single point of accountability if anything goes wrong on site.
If you are planning a piling order and want to align the marking, coating, and documentation with your project specification, share your drawings and soil data with the EZ Steel Industrial team at export@ezsteelpipe.com or call +86 731 8870 6116. They will turn around an offer that lists every pipe, every marking item, and every coating option in plain language – and they will deliver it on a schedule that keeps the rig moving.
