What are the mechanical properties required for A269 A269M steel pipe?

ASTM A269/A269M is one of the most frequently referenced specifications for austenitic stainless steel tubing used in general corrosion-resistant and low- or high-temperature service. If you are sourcing stainless steel tube for instrumentation, heat exchangers, chemical process lines, or sanitary systems, understanding the mechanical property requirements is essential to selecting a grade that can safely handle the design pressure, temperature, and forming operations in your application.

This guide breaks down exactly what the A269/A269M specification requires, why each property matters, and how to specify the right A269 A269M steel pipe for your project.

What ASTM A269/A269M Actually Covers

ASTM A269/A269M covers nominal-wall-thickness seamless and welded austenitic stainless steel tubing for general corrosion-resisting and low- or high-temperature service. The current edition (A269/A269M-25) lists more than 20 grades, with TP304, TP304L, TP316, TP316L, TP321, and TP347 being the most widely purchased.

An important scope note: mechanical property requirements do not apply to tubing smaller than 1/8 in. (3.2 mm) in inside diameter or thinner than 0.015 in. (0.38 mm). If you are working with capillary or hypodermic-size tubes, you will need to refer to ASTM A632 for mechanical requirements.

Mechanical Property Requirements by Grade

A269/A269M defines four mechanical properties that must be met at room temperature after the final solution-anneal heat treatment: tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and hardness. The exact values depend on the UNS grade.

Grade	UNS	Tensile min (MPa)	Yield min (MPa)	Elongation min (%)	Hardness max (HBW)
TP304	S30400	515	205	35	192
TP304L	S30403	485	170	35	192
TP316	S31600	515	205	35	192
TP316L	S31603	485	170	35	192
TP317	S31700	515	205	35	192
TP321	S32100	515	205	35	192
TP347	S34700	515	205	35	192

A useful observation: the "L" grades (TP304L, TP316L) trade roughly 30 MPa of yield strength for much better resistance to intergranular corrosion after welding, because their carbon content is capped at 0.030% versus 0.08% in the standard grades. For instrument tubing that will be bent or flare-connected in the field, the L-grade is almost always the safer pick.

Why Each Mechanical Property Matters

Tensile strength tells you the maximum stress the tube can withstand before it starts to neck. A269's minimums (515 MPa for standard grades, 485 MPa for L-grades) are well above what most process and instrument lines will ever see, but the number is your safety margin against pressure spikes and water hammer.

Yield strength is more important in design. A269 sets 205 MPa for standard grades and 170 MPa for L-grades. Below yield, the tube deforms elastically; above yield, it permanently bends. Pressure codes such as ASME B31.3 calculate allowable stress from yield, so under-specifying yield can force you to use a heavier wall than necessary.

Elongation (35% minimum for all common A269 grades) measures ductility — how much the tube can stretch before fracture. High elongation is what lets you cold-bend instrument tubing around a mandrel without cracking, and it is the property that enables the flaring test in Section 9.1 of the specification.

Hardness is capped at 192 HBW for the common grades and 256 HB / 100 HRB for the high-performance grades (TPXM-29, N08367, N08926). The hardness cap protects corrosion resistance: excessively hard austenitic stainless steel can be sensitised, meaning chromium carbides have precipitated at the grain boundaries and the steel is now vulnerable to intergranular attack.

Mandatory Mechanical Tests in A269/A269M

Beyond the four room-temperature properties, A269/A269M requires several mechanical tests to confirm the tube can be installed and operated without failure:

Flaring test (seamless tubes): one specimen per lot is expanded to a 60° included angle. Any crack or split fails the lot.
Flange test (welded tubes): one specimen per lot is flanged to verify weld ductility.
Reverse flattening test (welded tubes): one specimen per 1500 ft (460 m) of finished tubing. The weld seam is placed at 90° to the force. Cracking means the weld zone is not ductile enough for service.
Hardness test: Brinell or Rockwell on two tubes per lot.
Hydrostatic or eddy current leak test: every single tube must pass one of the two. Hydrostatic is the conservative default; eddy current is faster and acceptable for most general-service use.

Tensile and chemical analysis tests are performed per heat (or per heat-treatment lot), not per tube. Your mill test certificate (EN 10204 3.1) will list the actual values obtained on your specific lot, not just the specification minimums — and that is the document your QA team should compare against the A269/A269M table above.

Heat Treatment: Why All A269 Tubing Must Be Annealed

A269/A269M requires all material to be supplied in the heat-treated (solution-annealed) condition. For the standard austenitic grades, that means heating to a minimum of 1900°F (1040°C) followed by water quenching or other rapid cooling. Some high-alloy grades use higher solution temperatures: S31254 and S32654 require 2100°F (1150°C); N08904 requires 2000°F (1100°C); UNS N08367 requires 2025°F (1107°C).

This step is not optional. Solution annealing dissolves any chromium carbides that may have formed during prior processing and locks the carbon back into solid solution. The result is the soft, ductile, corrosion-resistant condition that gives A269 tubing its 35% elongation and 192 HBW hardness cap. Skip the anneal and you lose both corrosion resistance and formability.

If you intend to do significant cold forming (U-bends, tight 180° returns) after delivery, specify U bend tube material that has been bright-annealed in a controlled atmosphere. The oxide-free surface is much easier on bending tooling and removes the need for post-bend pickling.

A269 vs. A213 vs. A312: When to Choose Each

A269, A213/A213M (boiler and superheater tubes) and A312/A312M (austenitic pipe) are easy to confuse. Here is a quick rule of thumb:

Use A269 for general service — instrument tubing, low- and high-temperature process lines, heat exchangers in chemical and food plants, and sanitary systems. Both seamless and welded are allowed.
Use A213 when the tubing is installed inside a fired boiler or superheater and must meet ASME BPVC requirements. A213 also covers ferritic grades (T11, T22, T91, T92) that A269 does not.
Use A312 when you need NPS-schedule based pipe in larger diameters (typically above the OD range that A269 tubing covers). A312 uses different size tolerances and pressure ratings.

How to Order A269/A269M Tubing

To avoid delays and mismatches, your purchase order should include the following items at minimum:

Standard designation and year (for example, ASTM A269/A269M-24 or ASME SA-269).
UNS grade (TP304L, TP316L, TP321, TP347, etc.).
Size: outside diameter × nominal wall thickness, plus length (specific or random).
Manufacture: seamless (SMLS) or welded (EFW/ERW). For instrument lines above 100 bar, specify seamless.
Surface finish: bright annealed (BA) for instrument tubing; pickled and passivated for heat-exchanger service.
Leak test: eddy current (ET) or hydrostatic — name the preferred method.
Test report: EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate is the default for project work.

If your tubing will be used in ASME B31.3 process piping, note that additional testing requirements may apply — A269 calls this out in scope Note 1, and the supplementary requirements (S1 through S5) cover intergranular corrosion, helium leak, and other special tests you can opt into.

Common Questions About A269 Mechanical Properties

Does A269 require impact testing?

The base specification does not call out Charpy values. However, for low-temperature service (LNG, cryogenic, –196 °C), most projects will request Supplementary Requirement S4 (impact test) or order to ASME SA-479 with impact data. Confirm this with your QA team before placing the order.

Can welded A269 tubing meet the same mechanical properties as seamless?

Yes, after proper solution annealing the parent metal in welded A269 tubing meets the same tensile, yield, elongation, and hardness values as seamless. The weld zone is verified separately through the flange test and reverse flattening test, not through a tensile test on the seam itself.

What happens if my tube fails the flaring test?

The lot is rejected. Common root causes are improper annealing (tube too hard), excessive cold work from a final draw pass without a re-anneal, or contamination from the lubricant. A reputable mill will investigate and re-test before shipping a replacement lot.
