When engineers and procurement teams in the oil and gas sector look for line pipe, they encounter a wide alphabet of standards — API 5L for North American projects, ISO 3183 for international tenders, EN 10208 for European operators, and GOST 20295 for pipelines designed, supplied, or operated under Russian and CIS specifications. GOST 20295 K60 line pipe is one of the most commonly requested grades under this standard, but it is only one of several strength classes defined in the document.
This guide explains the steel grade system behind GOST 20295, which grades are covered, what each grade is intended for, and how the standard compares to the more familiar API 5L and ISO 3183 specifications. If you are selecting line pipe for a trunk gas line, a crude oil transmission project, or a refinery feed pipeline, the notes below should help you specify the right grade on the first attempt.
GOST 20295 is the interstate standard for welded steel pipes for main pipelines used to transport oil, gas, and refined products. It covers both longitudinal (LSAW) and spiral (SSAW/HSAW) welded pipes produced from hot-rolled or thermomechanically rolled plate and coil. The standard defines:
At EZ Steel Industrial, our carbon and carbon alloy steel line includes GOST 20295 welded pipe in the strength classes and impact classes most frequently used in long-distance transmission projects.
The strength grades in GOST 20295 use a simple convention. The number that follows the letter K indicates the minimum specified yield strength in kgf/mm², which is numerically close to (but not exactly equal to) the value in MPa divided by 10. For practical comparison with API 5L and ISO 3183, the table below uses the yield strength in MPa.
| GOST 20295 grade | Min. yield strength (MPa) | Tensile strength (MPa) | Min. elongation (%) | Typical API 5L equivalent |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| K34 | ≥ 245 | ≥ 412 | ≥ 21 | API 5L A / X42 |
| K38 | ≥ 265 | ≥ 431 | ≥ 20 | API 5L B |
| K42 | ≥ 290 | ≥ 441 | ≥ 20 | API 5L X42 |
| K48 | ≥ 330 | ≥ 510 | ≥ 19 | API 5L X46 |
| K50 | ≥ 345 | ≥ 491 | ≥ 20 | API 5L X52 |
| K52 | ≥ 353 | ≥ 510 | ≥ 20 | API 5L X52 |
| K54 | ≥ 372 | ≥ 539 | ≥ 19 | API 5L X56 |
| K55 | ≥ 380 | ≥ 549 | ≥ 19 | API 5L X56 / X60 |
| K56 | ≥ 392 | ≥ 539 | ≥ 18 | API 5L X60 |
| K60 | ≥ 410 | ≥ 588 | ≥ 17 | API 5L X60 / X65 |
The values in the table are typical working ranges drawn from GOST 20295-85 and the commonly used revision of the standard, with cross-references to API 5L for the convenience of international procurement teams. For acceptance, the specific revision called out in your purchase order always governs.
K60 line pipe is the highest strength class most commonly produced under GOST 20295. Its minimum yield strength of 410 MPa and tensile strength range of 588–810 MPa make it the natural choice for high-pressure gas and crude oil trunk lines where wall thickness must be kept under control while still meeting design factors.
For onshore gas transmission systems operating at design pressures of 7.4 to 9.8 MPa, K60 in spiral welded form (SSAW) has become the default option. Compared to K52, a K60 pipe of the same diameter can typically be specified with a slightly thinner wall for the same design factor, which reduces tonnage, transportation cost, and field welding time.
Typical chemical composition for K60 under GOST 20295 includes:
If you are comparing K60 with the API 5L grades most often called out in international tenders, our API 5L PSL1 and PSL2 line pipe page provides a side-by-side view of chemical composition, mechanical properties, and testing requirements.
Not every pipeline operates at transmission pressures. Many distribution networks, refinery intra-plant piping, low-pressure oil gathering lines, and water injection systems can be safely built with lower strength classes. The lower grades are also widely used in projects where the governing standard is GOST 20295 but the project profile is closer to API 5L A or B.
A few typical applications:
For refinery and plant-side applications, our pipeline works inventory covers ASTM A53, ASTM A106, API 5L, ISO 3183, and GOST 20295 grades so that a single project can be sourced from one manufacturer regardless of which standard applies to which spool.
Buyers sometimes ask for grades above K60 under GOST 20295. It is important to understand the scope of the standard. GOST 20295 was written for main oil and gas pipelines, and the highest strength class it explicitly covers is K60. For grades above 410 MPa minimum yield — projects that would call for X70 or X80 in API 5L — the Russian regulatory system points to a different standard: GOST R 52079 for line pipe, or to API 5L directly.
If your project requires a higher strength class, we can supply the pipe under the GOST R 52079 family, under API 5L PSL2, or under EN 10208 for European gas and oil pipeline projects. We routinely provide line pipe in L485 (X70) and above for high-pressure transmission projects.
Strength alone does not guarantee safety in cold-climate pipelines. GOST 20295 therefore adds four optional impact classes that define the minimum Charpy V-notch (CVN) impact energy at a specified test temperature:
| Impact class | Test temperature | Min. CVN energy (J) per specimen | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| K0 (no class) | +20 °C | — | Mild climate, no specific toughness requirement |
| K1 | 0 °C | ≥ 29 J (average of three specimens) | Temperate climate transmission |
| K2 | −20 °C | ≥ 29 J | Continental winter operation |
| K3 | −40 °C | ≥ 29 J | Northern regions, Arctic-adjacent lines |
| K4 | −60 °C | ≥ 29 J | Siberian and Arctic service |
Specifying the correct impact class is just as important as selecting the correct strength grade. A K60 pipe supplied to class K3, for example, will have a fine-grained, fully killed, microalloyed steel with controlled inclusions — quite different from a K60 pipe supplied to class K0.
Cross-standard comparison is the most common question we get from international buyers. The mapping is approximate, not exact, because the standards use different impact energy requirements, different acceptance criteria, and different testing frequencies. Use the mapping as a starting point for tender preparation, then confirm with the standard that governs your project.
| GOST 20295 | API 5L | ISO 3183 | EN 10208 |

| K34 | A / X42 | L245 | L245 |
| K38 | B | L245 / L290 | L245 / L290 |
| K42 | X42 | L290 | L290 |
| K50 / K52 | X52 | L360 | L360 |
| K54 / K55 | X56 | L390 | L390 |
| K56 / K60 | X60 / X65 | L415 / L450 | L415 / L450 |

Welded pipe under GOST 20295 is produced as either longitudinal or spiral welded. Spiral welded pipe is the most common form for large diameters (typically 426 mm and above), while longitudinal welded pipe is preferred for thinner walls, smaller diameters, and applications where tighter dimensional tolerances are required.
Mandatory tests and inspections under GOST 20295 include:
At EZ Steel Industrial, all GOST 20295 pipe is supplied with a mill test certificate (MTC) that includes the heat number, the chemical analysis, the mechanical test results, and the NDT reports. The certificates are issued in English and Russian and are signed off against the specific revision of the standard that appears on your purchase order.
A clear and complete specification avoids costly clarification cycles. The minimum information that should appear on a GOST 20295 purchase order is:
If you are not sure which combination of grade and impact class suits your line, our engineering team can review your design pressure, design temperature, pipeline length, and terrain to recommend a specification. The same team can also align your specification with API 5L PSL1, API 5L PSL2, ISO 3183, or EN 10208 if the project crosses regulatory regimes.
Although the standard is most familiar in Russia, the CIS, and parts of Eastern Europe, GOST 20295 pipe is used worldwide in projects that follow CIS or Russian design codes. The most common applications include:
For offshore or near-shore lines, the GOST 20295 pipe is normally supplemented with a higher grade of impact toughness and a heavier external coating system. Our steel flange inventory and industrial valve inventory are designed to match the GOST 20295 line pipe specification, so that the entire piping package can be sourced from a single supplier.
A GOST 20295 pipe supplier should be able to demonstrate more than the ability to roll a coil. The points that matter most, in our experience, are:
EZ Steel Industrial, established in 1994, operates manufacturing and inventory locations in Cangzhou, Yangzhou, and Lishui. The Yangzhou facility focuses on large-diameter carbon and alloy steel welded pipe, including GOST 20295 line pipe from K34 through K60 in spiral and longitudinal welded form. Combined annual production capacity exceeds 480,000 tons, with API 5L and API 5CT product certification, PED compliance, and mill test certificates issued to EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 as required.
If you are still deciding which GOST 20295 grade to call out, the practical rule of thumb is:
For projects that exceed the K60 envelope, step outside GOST 20295 and specify GOST R 52079, API 5L PSL2, or ISO 3183 with the appropriate strength grade and impact class.
