Picking the right steel grade is the single most important decision when you specify GOST 8732 SMLS structure pipe for a project. The Russian standard covers a wide family of seamless hot-rolled pipes, and the grade you select sets the tensile strength, weldability, impact toughness, and cost of every metre you buy. This guide walks through exactly which steel grades fall under GOST 8732, where each one is used, and how to match the grade to your application.
GOST 8732 is the Russian interstate standard for seamless hot-deformed steel pipes with outer diameter ≥ 20 mm and wall thickness ≥ 2.5 mm. Unlike GOST 8731, which is the technical requirements counterpart, GOST 8732 is the dimensional standard, so it does not list grades by itself. The actual steel grades are drawn from the referenced metallurgical standards, primarily GOST 380 (carbon steel) and GOST 4543 (alloy structural steel), and the resulting pipe is used for structure works such as frames, supports, machinery components, and general engineering applications.
All grades permitted under GOST 8732 fall into one of three families: ordinary-quality carbon steels, quality carbon steels, and alloy structural steels. Each family is defined by its own referenced GOST.
These are the most economical grades and the workhorse of general construction. They are written with the prefix "Ст" (St) followed by a number that indicates strength group, plus a deoxidation suffix: кп (rimmed, boiling), пс (semi-killed, semi-calm), or сп (killed, calm).
Under GOST 380, only mechanical properties are guaranteed for Group 1 grades; chemical composition is added for Group 2; Group 3 grades (the Ст3Г* series) add guaranteed weldability. For welded carbon & carbon alloy steel frames, Ст3сп and Ст3Гсп are the safe defaults.
These grades are designated by a two-digit number that approximates the mean carbon content in 0.01% and offer tighter chemical control plus defined heat-treatment response. They are the most common choice for GOST 8732 SMLS structure pipe that needs predictable mechanical properties.
Note that GOST 1050 also lists the "А" high-purity variants (10А, 20А, 45А) with reduced sulphur and phosphorus for impact-critical service.
Alloy grades are written with the alloying element symbol and its approximate percentage, in the order Cr–Ni–Mn–Si–V etc. The "А" suffix again means high-purity. These grades are specified when the pipe must keep its strength at elevated temperature, in cold service, or under high impact loads.
Most alloy structural pipes are delivered in a heat-treated condition (normalized, annealed, or quenched and tempered) so the specified mechanical properties are achieved.
| Grade Family | Source Standard | Example Grades | Typical Use in Structure Pipe |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary-quality carbon | GOST 380 | Ст3сп, Ст5сп, Ст3Гсп | Welded frames, low-stress supports, general construction |
| Quality carbon | GOST 1050 | 10, 20, 35, 45 | Machinery frames, high-load structures, pipeline supports |
| Low-alloy Mn / Mn-Si | GOST 4543 | 09Г2С, 17Г1С, 14Г2 | Cold-service welded structures, bridges, building frames |
| Alloy Cr / Cr-Mo / Cr-Ni | GOST 4543 | 20Х, 40Х, 12Х1МФ, 30ХГСА | Heat-resistant, high-strength and impact-loaded structures |
Start with the load case, not the grade list. Ask four questions:
To avoid mismatches at the receiving dock, your purchase order should clearly state each of the following items:
Specifying "St20" alone is not enough. St20, 20, and 20Х are three different steels from three different standards, with different chemistry and heat-treatment response. Always pair the grade with its source standard (for example, "GOST 1050 grade 20" or "GOST 4543 grade 20Х"). A second common error is ordering rimmed steel (кп) for welded structures; rimmed grades are prone to porosity and ageing and should be replaced with semi-killed (пс) or killed (сп) variants. Finally, do not substitute a pressure-pipe grade for a structural application without checking that the impact and dimensional requirements are still satisfied, and vice versa.
A reliable carbon & carbon alloy steel pipe supplier will hold stock across all three grade families, supply full GOST 380 / 1050 / 4543 traceability, and issue EN 10204 3.1 mill certificates. At EZ Steel Industrial, GOST 8732 SMLS structure pipe is produced across three manufacturing sites (Cangzhou, Yangzhou, and Lishui) with hot-rolling, cold-drawing, heat treatment, and non-destructive testing all under one quality system, and every shipment is delivered with the test documents your inspector expects.
If you have a grade, dimension, or delivery-condition question, send your inquiry to the EZ Steel Industrial team and they will confirm the closest standard match, the available stock, and the lead time for your project.
