Pulp and paper mill piping is one of the harshest service environments in the process industries. Liquor lines, bleach plants, chlorine dioxide generators, black liquor evaporators, and white water loops expose welded and seamless tubes to a changing mix of sodium hydroxide, sodium sulfide, chlorides, hypochlorite, sulfur compounds, and high-temperature steam. Selecting the right ASTM B619 nickel alloy tube solutions is therefore a critical decision for project reliability. EZ Steel Industrial supplies B619 nickel alloy tubes (UNS N10276 Hastelloy C-276 and UNS N06200 Hastelloy C-2000, among other grades) specifically engineered for these aggressive pulp and paper applications.
This guide explains what B619 nickel alloy tubes are, which grades and chemistries suit different pulp mill services, and how to specify the right combination of weld integrity, corrosion testing, and documentation for long service life.
ASTM B619 is the standard specification for welded nickel and nickel-cobalt alloy pipe. It covers a broad family of corrosion-resistant alloys, including Hastelloy C-276 (UNS N10276), Hastelloy C-2000 (UNS N06200), Hastelloy C-22 (UNS N06022), Monel 400 (UNS N04400), Nickel 200/201 (UNS N02200/N02201), and Inconel 600 (UNS N06600). Compared with seamless B622 tubes, B619 welded construction offers significant cost savings for long mill piping runs, while still meeting strict chemical and mechanical requirements when the weld is properly solution annealed.
For pulp and paper service, the welded seam must be 100% radiographed and the pipe supplied in the solution-annealed condition after welding. This produces a weld zone that is metallurgically equivalent to the parent metal for corrosion purposes, which is essential in chloride- and sulfur-bearing environments.
Different zones in a pulp mill create very different corrosion challenges. Matching the B619 grade to the service condition is the single most important step in material selection.
Kraft digesters operate with white liquor (NaOH + Na2S) at 150-180°C. Nickel 200/201 (UNS N02200 / N02201) is the traditional material of choice because it tolerates hot concentrated caustic without stress corrosion cracking. For higher-temperature digester piping and sulfide-bearing black liquor lines, low-carbon Nickel 201 (B619, N02201) is preferred to avoid graphitic corrosion at grain boundaries.
Bleach plant stages use chlorine dioxide, hypochlorite, and acid washes. These oxidizing chloride environments are the classic service condition for Hastelloy C-276 and C-2000 B619 nickel alloy tubes. C-276 (15-17% Mo) provides strong resistance to localized corrosion and pitting, while C-2000 (22-24% Cr, 15-17% Mo, plus 1.3-1.9% Cu) adds higher chromium and copper for improved resistance to the mixed acid conditions that occur in the acidic bleach washer stages.
Evaporator tubes carry concentrated black liquor with residual alkali and sulfide. For welded evaporator and pre-evaporator piping, B619 C-276 or C-2000 is recommended where chloride contamination of the liquor is possible. ASME B619 pipe supplied in the solution-annealed condition with 100% RT and ASTM G28 corrosion testing is a robust specification.
Green liquor contains dissolved sodium carbonate, sodium sulfide, and trace chlorides. Nickel 201 (B619, N02201) is widely used for green liquor piping and clarifier overflow lines where caustic SCC risk is high.
For less aggressive but still chloride-bearing loops, the cost-effective choice is often Inconel 600 (B619, N06600) or C-276, depending on chloride concentration and temperature. Where microbiologically influenced corrosion is a concern, C-2000 with its higher Cr content provides a more protective passive film.
The weld seam is the most common point of premature failure in pulp mill nickel alloy piping. Three controls are non-negotiable for B619 welded tubes in this service.
First, the pipe must be supplied in the solution-annealed condition after welding, typically 1060-1120°C followed by rapid water quench. This dissolves any carbides or intermetallic phases precipitated during welding and restores corrosion resistance across the weld and HAZ.
Second, specify 100% radiographic examination of the longitudinal weld seam per ASTM E94, plus 100% ultrasonic examination per ASTM E213. Any lack of fusion, porosity, or oxidation coloring must be rejected.
Third, require ASTM G28 Method A corrosion testing on weld-inclusive samples, with a corrosion rate no more than 20% above the base metal. This is the most direct verification that the weld zone matches the parent metal in mill service.
A complete B619 nickel alloy tube package for a pulp mill project should include the mill test certificate (MTC) per EN 10204 3.1, a PMI verification report (XRF or OES) on each pipe end, hydrostatic test records, hardness traverse across the weld (typically 85-95 HRB), and a documented solution-anneal heat treatment chart. For nuclear or safety-critical recovery boiler piping, additional documentation per ASME B16.34 and RCC-M may be requested.
EZ Steel Industrial delivers B619 nickel alloy tubes with full traceability, EN 10204 3.1 certificates, and optional third-party inspection (SGS, BV, TÜV). All tubes are produced in the manufacturer's ISO 9001 facility with API 5L/5CT product certification and can be supplied in custom lengths, beveled ends, and pre-fabricated spool pieces to reduce on-site welding time.
A practical specification for pulp mill B619 nickel alloy tubes reads: "Nickel alloy welded pipe per ASTM B619, grade UNS N10276 (or UNS N06200 / N02201 as applicable), supplied in the solution-annealed condition after welding. Weld seam shall be 100% radiographed per ASTM E94 and 100% ultrasonic tested per ASTM E213. Material shall pass ASTM G28 Method A on weld-inclusive samples with corrosion rate not exceeding 1.5x base metal rate. Each pipe shall be hydrostatically tested, PMI verified, and accompanied by EN 10204 3.1 certificate."
