A Weld Neck (WN) flange, also known as a welded neck flange, is a type of pipe flange designed to create a permanent, high-strength connection between two pipes or between a pipe and a piece of equipment (like a valve or pressure vessel). What sets it apart from other flange types is its long, tapered neck that extends from the flange's base and is welded directly to the pipe. This neck acts as a reinforcement, distributing stress evenly across the connection and making it ideal for applications involving high pressure, high temperature, or frequent thermal cycling.
At first glance, a WN flange resembles a flat, circular disk with bolt holes around its perimeter (to secure it to a mating flange) and a raised hub in the center. The hub transitions into the tapered neck, which is the part welded to the pipe. The flange's face—where it contacts the mating flange—can vary in design (e.g., raised face, flat face, or ring-type joint) depending on the project's pressure and sealing requirements. Together, these features make the WN flange a workhorse in industries where failure is not an option.
