EN 10216-5 is the European standard that sets the technical delivery conditions for seamless stainless steel tubes used in pressure service. It is part of the EN 10216 series, which covers seamless steel tubes for pressure purposes, with Part 5 dedicated specifically to stainless steel tubes. In practical terms, an EN10216-5 steel tube is a seamless tube made from austenitic or austenitic-ferritic (duplex) stainless steel, manufactured to tight tolerances and supplied with defined inspection and certification so that it can be relied on in boilers, heat exchangers, and pressurized process lines.
The standard applies to seamless tubes of circular cross-section made of austenitic (including creep-resisting) and austenitic-ferritic stainless steels, intended for pressure and corrosion-resisting service at room temperature, at low temperatures, or at elevated temperatures. It defines requirements for steel grade, chemical composition, mechanical properties, dimensions and tolerances, heat treatment, surface condition, inspection, and marking. Two test categories are available, which lets the purchaser select the level of testing appropriate to the duty of the application.
The most commonly specified grades in EN 10216-5 are 1.4301 (304), 1.4404 (316L), 1.4541 (321), and 1.4571 (316Ti). For higher-temperature duties, creep-resisting grades such as 1.4919 and 1.4958 (Alloy 800H type) are available. Duplex grades such as 1.4462 (2205) provide higher strength and better resistance to chloride-induced stress corrosion, which makes them a strong choice for offshore and marine environments. Low-carbon variants such as 1.4307 and 1.4404 are preferred where the tube will be welded, because they reduce the risk of sensitization and intergranular corrosion.
EN 10216-5 tubes are produced by a seamless process and may be hot finished or cold finished. Solution annealing is mandatory for austenitic grades, restoring the microstructure after forming so the tube keeps its corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. The surface must be free from scale, cracks, and other defects, and pickling or passivation may be required depending on the delivery condition. Non-standard dimensions can be produced for project-specific requirements, which is useful when a heat exchanger or boiler design calls for an unusual size.
Because these tubes serve pressure equipment, testing is more demanding than for ordinary pipe. Tensile tests verify yield strength, tensile strength, and elongation, and hardness tests may be required. Non-destructive testing such as eddy current or ultrasonic examination detects surface and internal defects, while hydrostatic testing confirms pressure integrity. For critical service, intergranular corrosion testing and grain size assessment can be specified. Every tube is marked with the manufacturer, steel grade, dimensions, heat number, and the standard reference, and is delivered with an EN 10204 Type 3.1 or 3.2 inspection certificate.
Because EN 10216-5 tubes combine corrosion resistance with dependable mechanical performance, they appear across a wide range of industries:
A common question is how EN 10216-5 compares with ASTM A312. ASTM A312 covers seamless and welded stainless steel pipe for general service, while EN 10216-5 is specifically for seamless pressure tubes with defined test categories and standardized EN 10204 certification. Projects falling under the EU Pressure Equipment Directive (PED 2014/68/EU) typically require EN 10216-5 tubes, whereas general industrial piping outside PED jurisdiction is often supplied to ASTM A312. The choice usually comes down to the governing code and the documentation required by the project.
Getting the right grade, dimensions, and certification is only half the job; the other half is working with a supplier that can deliver consistently. EZ Steel Industrial Co., Ltd. is a manufacturer and integrated supplier of industrial metal piping systems, operating since 1994 with more than 500 employees and over 480,000 tonnes of annual production capacity. The company supplies stainless steel tube, alloy and carbon steel pipe, copper-nickel materials, fittings, flanges, and valves, backed by ISO 9001 quality management, API 5L and API 5CT product certification, PED compliance, and more than 12 quality checkpoints across production. Bundled project supply, technical documentation, and just-in-time delivery make it a practical partner for EPC contractors and equipment manufacturers.
EN 10216-5 steel tube is a high-integrity seamless stainless product built for pressure service, from boiler tubing to heat exchanger and process applications. Choosing the right grade, confirming the test category, and working with a certified supplier are the steps that keep a project on schedule and within code.
