If you have ever requested a quote for stainless steel tubing in China, you have likely seen two different code formats: GB/T 13296 (often written as GBT13296) and GB 13296. At first glance they look like two separate standards, and a quick search of supplier catalogs will often list them as if they were different products. In practice the two codes refer to the same Chinese national standard for stainless steel tube used in boilers and heat exchangers. The real differences a buyer needs to understand are the version of the standard (2013 versus 2023), the material grade inside the standard, and the manufacturing route of the tube. This guide explains each of those points in plain language and shows how EZ Steel Industrial applies the standard in real projects.
In the Chinese standards system, the prefix GB stands for Guobiao, or national standard. The letter /T after the code means Tuijian, which translates to "recommended" or "voluntary." So GB/T 13296 is the recommended national standard numbered 13296, while GB 13296 is simply the short form of the same number without the T. Both refer to Seamless stainless steel tubes for boiler and heat exchanger.
When you see a mill test certificate, a packing list, or an inspection document, the certificate may list the standard as "GB/T 13296-2023" or "GB 13296-2023" depending on the writer's habit. The product, the chemical composition limits, and the test requirements are identical. If a supplier is quoting you two different prices for the two codes, ask them to clarify, because the material should be the same. The distinction that actually matters is the version year and the steel grade inside the standard, not the slash-T.
GB/T 13296 has been revised several times. The previous widely used edition was GB/T 13296-2013, and the current edition in force is GB/T 13296-2023, published in 2023 by the State Administration for Market Regulation. If you are buying boiler tubing for a new project, you should specify the 2023 version, because it tightens several requirements that affect long-term service life.
The most important technical changes between the two versions are:
In short, if your procurement documents still list GB/T 13296-2013, a mill quoting to the 2023 edition is supplying a tube that meets a stricter specification, not a different product. Always confirm the version in the contract and on the certificate.
GB/T 13296 is a standard that covers many steel grades, not a single grade. The most common grades stocked by Chinese mills for heat exchanger tube applications are:
Two tubes quoted as GB/T 13296 can have very different corrosion allowances, weld behavior, and allowable stress depending on which grade is selected. Always pin down the UNS or EN number as well as the GB designation when you issue a purchase order.
GB/T 13296 allows both hot-finished and cold-finished seamless tubes, and the choice has a direct effect on dimensional tolerance, surface finish, and price. EZ Steel Industrial produces both options and can help you match the route to your service conditions.
Hot-rolled tubes are produced by piercing and elongating billets at high temperature. Outside-diameter tolerance for hot-rolled tubes is wider: ±0.4 mm to -1.6 mm depending on OD. Wall-thickness tolerance ranges from +28% to +40%. Hot-rolled tubes are typically used for larger-diameter stainless steel tube shells in heat exchangers and for high-pressure boiler headers where wall thickness is heavy.
Cold-drawn tubes are produced by drawing hot-rolled tubes through dies at room temperature, often with intermediate annealing. Outside-diameter tolerance drops to ±0.10 mm on small OD, and wall-thickness tolerance is held to +20% to +22%. Cold-drawn tubes have a brighter surface, tighter dimensions, and are required for U-bend applications and for condensers where thin walls and small bend radii are common. Maximum developed length under the standard is 32 meters, with U-bend leg lengths up to 15.24 meters.
Every tube leaving the mill should carry a certificate confirming the following inspections, all of which are mandatory under the standard:
At EZ Steel Industrial we issue an EN 10204 type 3.1 mill test certificate for every GB/T 13296 order, and the inspection records can be linked to the heat number marked on each tube. For nuclear or high-pressure service, additional NDT such as 100% ultrasonic or radiographic testing can be added on request.
Most international EPC projects cross-reference GB/T 13296 with ASTM A213 (Seamless ferritic and austenitic alloy-steel boiler, superheater, and heat-exchanger tubes) and EN 10216-5 (Seamless steel tubes for pressure purposes, stainless steel). The three standards cover the same product family, and the chemical composition of equivalent grades is closely aligned:
In practice, a tube ordered to GB/T 13296 with grade 07Cr17Ni12Mo2 can be dual-certified to ASTM A213/ASME SA213 TP316H when the project requires both Chinese and ASME compliance. EZ Steel Industrial routinely supplies dual-certified tubes for refineries, power plants, and chemical projects that must meet both local and international codes.
A few points worth confirming before placing your order:
EZ Steel Industrial manufactures GB/T 13296 seamless stainless tubes across the full grade range, with stocks of 12Cr18Ni9, 07Cr19Ni10, and 07Cr17Ni12Mo2 in both hot-rolled and cold-drawn conditions. Our production covers three sites in China, ISO 9001 and API 5L/5CT certified, with hydrostatic, ultrasonic, and eddy-current testing available on every order.
