GOST 8732 and GOST 8734 are two of the most frequently specified Russian steel tube standards, and they are often confused because both cover seamless carbon and alloy steel tubes. The name looks similar and the material families overlap, yet the two standards are built for completely different jobs. One is a hot-formed product for large-diameter structural and pressure systems; the other is a cold-formed product for precise, small and medium tubes. This article walks through the practical differences between GOST 8732 and GOST 8734 steel tubes so engineers and buyers can specify the right one without guessing.
GOST 8732 is the standard for seamless hot-deformed (hot-rolled) steel tubes intended for general structural use, mechanical components, and pipework that does not demand pinpoint dimensional precision. Its counterpart, GOST 8734, covers seamless cold-deformed tubes produced by cold rolling or cold drawing. In short, GOST 8734 is the tighter, smaller, higher-precision brother of the 8732 range, and it is the standard people usually mean when they need a tube with tighter tolerances and a better surface finish than a hot-formed tube can deliver.
The core difference between the two standards lies in how the tube is shaped. GOST 8732 tubes are hot-deformed: the heated billet is pierced and rolled to size at high temperature, which allows large diameters and thick walls but leaves the outside surface slightly rougher. GOST 8734 tubes begin as a hot-formed precursor and are then worked again cold, either by cold drawing or cold rolling. Working the steel below the recrystallization temperature refines the dimensions, improves the surface finish, and can sharpen mechanical properties, which is why cold-drawn 8734 tubes are favoured wherever accuracy and finish matter more than maximum size.
That difference also explains typical size ranges. GOST 8732 hot-rolled seamless tubes commonly run up to roughly 550 mm in outside diameter with walls of about 75 mm for heavy-duty service. GOST 8734 cold-formed tubes are produced in a much finer range, typically from about 5 mm up to around 250 mm in outside diameter with wall thicknesses from roughly 0.3 mm, which is where hydraulic cylinders, precision shafts, and small machine components are specified.
If you compare a GOST 8732 tube and a GOST 8734 tube side by side, the practical difference you notice first is accuracy. A hot-rolled 8732 tube is supplied to a looser dimensional tolerance because hot deformation simply cannot hold the same precision. A cold-deformed 8734 tube is drawn or rolled through precise tooling, so it offers tighter outside-diameter tolerance, more uniform wall thickness, and a smoother, cleaner surface. For most projects this does not matter, but for a component that is machined and mated to another part, that consistency is exactly what prevents scrap and rework.
Wall thickness variation is where the gap is most visible. Hot-rolled pipe tends to show greater dimensional variation and a rougher interior surface, while cold-drawn tube holds far better concentricity. Many buyers who need a honed, precise bore choose a cold-worked 8734 tube for this reason.
Both standards cover carbon and alloy structural steels, with common grades such as 10, 20, 35, 45 and 09G2S appearing across the two ranges. Because cold working hardens the steel, a GOST 8734 tube can show slightly higher strength at the same chemical composition, but it is also closer in microstructure and more consistent from end to end. If a design is looking for predictable hardness and strength in a small diameter, the cold-formed product is usually the more repeatable choice.
GOST 8732 tubes are at home in structural frames, racks, brackets, general mechanical parts, and process piping where large sizes and long lengths are normal. They are a standard choice for the skeleton of industrial buildings, support systems, and pipelines that carry fluids under moderate conditions. GOST 8734 tubes, by contrast, show up in hydraulic cylinders, precision machine components, small shafts, instruments, and thin-wall applications where dimensional consistency and surface finish are the deciding factors.
Ask what the tube has to do. If the project needs a large outside diameter or a thick wall for structural or pressure duty, specify GOST 8732 steel tube. If the component is small, needs a tight OD tolerance, a clean surface, or a uniform thin wall, a cold-drawn 8734 tube is the better fit. Over-specifying a cold-drawn tube for a big structural member wastes money, and under-specifying a hot-rolled tube where precision matters carries the cost of rework. Match the manufacturing method to the function and the decision becomes straightforward.
