For heavy vertical loads with strict settlement limits on permanent foundations, closed-end piles deliver higher tip resistance and better settlement control.

For inclined or batter piles and deepwater marine installations, a tapered or reinforced shoe helps protect the toe and keep the pile on line during driving.

For gravel, cobble, or weathered-rock layers, a reinforced shoe is strongly recommended to prevent toe damage under high-impact driving.
