For EPC contractors, oil and gas operators, port builders and infrastructure developers, "how big can it really get?" is usually the first question when they contact a Chinese mill. The short answer is that big diameter steel pipe from established Chinese manufacturers is currently available in outer diameters from a few hundred millimetres up to roughly 2,800 mm for welded products, with special seamless and forged-pipe projects reaching outside diameters of around 720 mm or more. The exact upper limit depends on the manufacturing route, the steel grade, the standard you need, and how the project is packaged.
This guide walks through the real ceiling for each pipe family, the standards that govern those diameters, the inspection requirements that go with them, and how to talk to a Chinese mill so that the size you order is the size that actually ships.
Buyers often expect one headline figure, but big diameter steel pipe covers three very different product families. Each one is made by a different process, and each has its own diameter ceiling.
Hot-rolled seamless pipe is produced by piercing a solid billet. As the outside diameter grows, the billet becomes heavier, the piercing force rises, and mill torque becomes the limiting factor. That is why a modern continuous-rolling seamless line launched by Hengyang Valin Steel Tube in 2026 covers outer diameters from 323.8 mm up to 630 mm, with wall thickness from 7.2 mm to 65 mm, and the seamless ceiling for most other Chinese mills sits in the same range, with a few specialised lines reaching outside diameters near 720 mm.
Longitudinally welded pipe (LSAW, also called JCOE or UOE) is formed from heavy steel plate. Because the starting material is plate rather than billet, the diameter ceiling is set by plate width, forming press capacity, and welding capability. Most Chinese LSAW lines cover outside diameters up to about 1,600 mm, and the largest new lines are being expanded to around 2,800 mm to serve water transmission, offshore wind and bridge piling.
Spiral welded pipe (SSAW or HSAW) is formed by helically bending a coil. It is the easiest route to large diameters because the same coil can produce a wide OD range simply by changing the forming angle. Chinese SSAW mills commonly quote outside diameters from 219 mm up to about 3,500 mm, and some specialist producers go even larger for one-off projects.
The table below summarises the practical maximum outside diameters that an experienced Chinese mill such as EZ Steel Industrial can quote, based on the manufacturing route and the relevant product standard. The numbers are typical, not absolute; special projects can push further, often at a higher cost and longer lead time.
| Manufacturing process | Typical OD range | Practical maximum OD | Common standards |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hot-rolled seamless | 60 – 630 mm | ~720 mm (special mills) | ASTM A106, A53, API 5L, EN 10216, GB/T 5310, GB/T 8162, GOST 8732 |
| LSAM / JCOE / UOE | 406 – 1,600 mm | ~2,800 mm (new lines) | API 5L, ASTM A252, EN 10208, ISO 3183, GB/T 3091, GOST 20295 |
| SSAW / HSAW | 219 – 2,500 mm | ~3,500 mm (project basis) | API 5L, ASTM A252, EN 10208, GB/T 3091, GOST 20295 |
| Forged or heavy-wall pipe | 200 – 1,000 mm | ~1,200 mm (forged) | ASME B16.5, ASTM A105, custom |
In other words, the real ceiling for "big diameter" Chinese steel pipe is roughly 3,500 mm outside diameter, achieved by spiral welded pipe for special applications. For day-to-day project work, most buyers are actually selecting from the 500–2,000 mm range, where every mill in China can offer stable supply.
Chinese mills do not pick a diameter in isolation. The OD and wall thickness are governed by a standard, and the standard sets the inspection regime, the allowed tolerances and the marking requirements. When you ask a mill for a 1,420 mm pipe, you should also say which standard you need it to follow, because the same nominal OD can come with very different mechanical requirements.
For transmission pipelines, API 5L PSL1 and PSL2 pipe is the default choice. ISO 3183 and EN 10208 (L245 to L485 grades) cover similar duty and are widely quoted for cross-border projects. For low-pressure fluid lines, ASTM A53 and GB/T 3091 (Q195 to Q345) are common.
For structural and foundation work, ASTM A252 is the standard for steel tubular piles in grades 1, 2 and 3, with diameters commonly up to about 1,200 mm. ASTM A500 grade C and EN 10210 hot-finished hollow sections cover structural columns and braces, typically up to around 800 mm. Larger structural diameters are usually produced as welded pipe, not seamless, because the wall thickness and tonnage are easier to control in plate form.
For pressure and high-temperature service, ASTM A106 grade B/C, ASTM A335 P5 to P122, and GB/T 5310 cover seamless alloy and carbon steel pipe, with diameters in the 60–720 mm range. For heat-exchanger and boiler service, ASTM A179, A192, A210 and A213 cover small to medium diameters, while GB/T 13296 and JIS G3463 cover stainless and alloy seamless tubes for the same duty.
Several practical factors decide the maximum diameter a Chinese mill can quote for a given standard:
Plate or billet supply. For welded pipe, the heaviest plate coil in commercial production is around 25 mm thick and 1,800 mm wide, which caps the wall thickness and pipe circumference for a given OD. For seamless pipe, the heaviest round billet most mills can pierce is around 600–700 mm in diameter, which sets the upper OD limit.
Forming and welding equipment. LSAW mills use a JCO or UO press to bend plate, and the press tonnage sets the maximum plate thickness for a given OD. SSAW mills use coil and a forming stand, so their ceiling is set by coil width and the welding power source.
Heat treatment capacity. Large-diameter thick-wall pipe often needs normalisation, quenching and tempering, or stress-relief heat treatment. The size of the heat-treatment furnace becomes the real bottleneck, because a 2,500 mm OD pipe may not fit a standard furnace.
NDT and hydrostatic test capability. Hydrostatic testing pressure increases with diameter for a given wall thickness and material. A 2,000 mm OD pipe at 6 MPa service pressure needs a test rig that can fill and pressurise that volume safely. Mills that can hydrostatically test 3,000 mm+ pipe are relatively few in China.
Logistics. Even if the mill can produce the pipe, road and port handling can become the binding constraint. Pipe above about 2,500 mm OD usually needs special trailers, low-bed trucks and, in some cases, sea-river shipping rather than road freight.
When a buyer asks for the maximum diameter, an experienced supplier does not give a single number. Instead, the conversation moves through a few standard steps that are worth understanding before you send the enquiry.
First, the mill asks for the duty. A water transmission line, a port pile, a refinery penstock and an offshore wind monopile will all have different maximum diameters because the wall thickness, steel grade and inspection regime change with the duty.
Second, the mill asks for the standard. API 5L PSL2 and ASTM A252 grade 3 are not interchangeable, and the standard will fix the allowed chemical composition, the mandatory impact test temperature and the marking format.
Third, the mill asks for the order quantity and the delivery window. Producing one 2,800 mm OD pipe is not the same as producing 20 km of 1,420 mm OD pipe. The first is a project item, the second is a production run. Pricing and lead time follow that distinction.
Fourth, the mill reviews its production schedule. Most Chinese mills run three shifts on the LSAW and SSAW lines, so an enquiry for 5,000 tonnes of 1,620 mm LSAW pipe can usually be scheduled into the next production window. An enquiry for a single 2,800 mm pipe will be quoted as a project and may share a heat with other large orders.
Fifth, the mill confirms the inspection plan. Buyers should expect, at minimum, a mill test certificate to EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2, full-length ultrasonic testing, dimensional checks, and hydrostatic testing at the pressure defined by the standard. For diameters above about 1,800 mm, a third-party inspector is often involved, either from the buyer's side or from a classification society such as DNV, BV or TUV.
In practice, the largest Chinese pipe exports go to a small set of applications, and each has a typical diameter band.
Long-distance oil and gas pipelines. Main lines usually run in the 1,016–1,422 mm OD band, with API 5L PSL2 grades up to X80. Larger diameters, up to 1,800 mm, are used for trunk lines and slurry pipelines.
Water transmission and penstocks. These range from about 1,200 mm up to 3,000 mm, often in LSAW or SSAW with internal coating and external epoxy or 3LPE coating. Pressure ratings are typically 6–25 bar for water and up to 100 bar for hydro penstocks.
Port and marine piling. Steel tubular piles in ASTM A252 grade 3 are common in 600–1,200 mm OD for port quays and breakwaters. For very heavy berths and offshore wind monopiles, diameters of 2,000–3,000 mm have been produced in SSAW.
Bridge and structural foundations. EN 10210 and ASTM A500 hollow sections are widely used in 200–800 mm OD. Above 800 mm, the pipe is usually a welded product supplied to a structural standard such as GB/T 8162 or JIS G3444.
Petrochemical and refinery headers. These are smaller in diameter, usually 200–600 mm, but heavier in wall and higher in alloy content, often ASTM A335 P11, P22 or P91, and produced as seamless pipe.
To get a useful quotation, include the following items in the enquiry so the mill can match the diameter to a real production line:
The clearer this list, the more accurate the mill's diameter and price response will be. A bare "give me your biggest pipe" almost always produces a quote that the mill can technically produce but the buyer cannot actually use.
EZ Steel Industrial has been producing and exporting industrial metal piping since 1994, with manufacturing and stockholding facilities in Cangzhou, Yangzhou and Lishui, and an annual capacity above 480,000 tonnes. The product range covers carbon and carbon alloy steel, stainless steel, copper-nickel alloy, and the full project package of fittings, flanges, gaskets, stud bolts and industrial valves.
For diameter-driven enquiries, the relevant families are the pipeline works range, which includes API 5L PSL1 and PSL2, ISO 3183, EN 10208, ASTM A53, ASTM A106 and GB/T 3091, and the structure works range, which includes ASTM A252 steel tubular piles, ASTM A500, EN 10210, JIS G3444, GB/T 8162 and GOST 8732 structural pipe. Stainless pipeline products in the 60–1,200 mm band are covered under stainless steel pipeline works to standards such as ASTM A312, ASTM A269, EN 10312, GB/T 14976 and GOST 9940.
Production is supported by automated forming, CNC machining, robotic welding, plate rolling and a non-destructive testing setup that includes X-ray and ultrasonic inspection. Every order is shipped with full mill test documentation, and more than 12 in-process quality checkpoints are in place from plate receiving to final marking. API 5L, API 5CT, ISO 9001 and PED compliance documentation can be issued against the standard required by the project.
If you are trying to put a single number on a slide or in a specification, use the following rule of thumb.
Up to 720 mm OD: specify seamless, in any of the ASTM, EN, GB/T, JIS or GOST pressure and structural standards. Most Chinese mills can deliver.
720 mm to 1,600 mm OD: specify welded (LSAW or SSAW), in API 5L, ISO 3183, EN 10208, GB/T 3091, GOST 20295 or ASTM A252, depending on the duty.
1,600 mm to 2,800 mm OD: specify welded, mainly SSAW or new-generation LSAW lines, typically for water transmission, port piling and large structural foundations. Expect a project quotation and a longer lead time.
Above 2,800 mm OD: treat the enquiry as a one-off project, not a catalogue item. The mill, the inspection body and the logistics plan need to be agreed together.
That is the realistic ceiling for big diameter steel pipe from Chinese manufacturers in 2026. The pipe itself is rarely the constraint; the constraint is the combination of standard, steel grade, wall thickness, inspection and logistics. When all four are aligned, the diameter limit is essentially a project management question rather than a manufacturing one.
What is the maximum diameter of seamless steel pipe from China? For most mills, the practical ceiling is about 630–720 mm OD. A small number of special seamless lines, including the Hengyang Valin continuous-rolling line commissioned in 2026, sit in the 323.8–630 mm range as their nominal OD band.
What is the maximum diameter of LSAW steel pipe from China? Standard LSAW lines cover up to about 1,600 mm OD. New lines under expansion in 2026 are pushing the ceiling to around 2,800 mm OD.
What is the maximum diameter of SSAW steel pipe from China? Common production reaches 2,500 mm OD, and project-based runs have reached about 3,500 mm OD.
What is the largest steel pipe pile diameter available? For ASTM A252 grade 3 piling, 1,200 mm OD is widely available. For larger monopile-style applications, 2,000–3,000 mm OD welded pipe has been produced on a project basis.
Does the steel grade affect the maximum diameter? Yes. Higher-strength grades such as API 5L X80 or ASTM A252 grade 3 require stricter control of chemical composition and heat treatment, which can reduce the maximum OD a mill can produce in a single heat.
How long does it take to produce a large-diameter pipe order? A standard 1,420 mm LSAW order in API 5L PSL2 usually takes 30–60 days from order confirmation. A 2,500 mm+ project order typically takes 60–120 days, including plate procurement, forming, welding, heat treatment and final hydrostatic testing.
If you have a specific diameter, standard and quantity in mind, send the enquiry to EZ Steel Industrial with the items listed in section 7. The mill will confirm whether the diameter fits a standard production line or needs to be quoted as a project, and will return a price, lead time and inspection plan against your specification.
