If you are placing an export order for BS 2871 copper alloy tube for the first time, the question of delivery time almost always comes up before the purchase order is even drafted. The short answer is that stock items usually ship within 7 to 15 working days, while a standard customized production run is typically completed in 25 to 35 working days from the date the deposit or L/C is confirmed. The longer answer, the one that actually decides when your tubes arrive at the job site, depends on four variables: alloy grade, dimensional range, order quantity, and documentation.
This guide walks through what those four variables mean in practice, how EZ Steel Industrial schedules a typical export order, and what buyers can do to keep the lead time on the short end of the range.
A BS 2871 copper alloy tube is a seamless or welded tube manufactured to the British Standard 2871 series, most commonly Part 1 for general purposes, Part 2 for higher-pressure plumbing, and Part 3 for refrigeration and air-conditioning duties. The standards reference a wide range of copper-nickel, brass, and aluminum-brass grades such as C106, C107, CN108, CZ110, and CZ111, and they are widely used in plumbing, HVAC, heat exchangers, condensers, refrigeration, and shipboard piping.
Most export orders we see fall into one of three patterns:
Each pattern follows a different production path, which is why quoting a single number for delivery time is misleading.
Based on how EZ Steel Industrial schedules its copper & nickel alloy tube line, a typical export order moves through the following stages:
| Order pattern | Typical quantity | Production lead time | Total arrival window (port to port) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stock item, standard OD and wall | Up to 2 tons | 3 to 7 working days | Around 3 to 5 weeks |
| Customized standard grade | 2 to 20 tons | 20 to 30 working days | Around 5 to 7 weeks |
| Special alloy, special size, or U-bend required | Any | 30 to 45 working days | Around 6 to 9 weeks |
| Project call-off against existing frame agreement | Per call-off | 15 to 25 working days | Around 4 to 6 weeks |
The numbers above are working time at the mill. They do not include the pre-production activities that often add a week, which we cover in the next section.
From the moment you send an inquiry to the moment the container is discharged at your port, an export order moves through five distinct phases. Buyers who understand the order can compress each one.
This phase covers the technical review of your grade, OD, wall thickness, length, temper, and any testing extras, plus the proforma invoice and bank paperwork. If you provide a clear specification, a drawing, and the destination port up front, this phase usually closes in three working days. Missing drawings, unclear tolerances, or a grade that needs cross-referencing against BS 2871 Part 1, 2, or 3 can easily double this.
For common grades such as C106 or C12200, billets are already in our casting cycle, so preparation is limited to cutting and inspection. For less common alloys, especially admiralty brass, aluminum-brass, or high-nickel Cu-Ni, the mill has to either pull from a wider inventory pool or cast a dedicated heat. Dedicated heats are what push the production lead time toward the 35 to 45 working day range.
Piercing, extrusion, cold drawing, and annealing are scheduled in batches so that the same furnace cycle can serve several orders. This is also where U-bending or finning is added if your order includes heat efficiency tubes. Tight OD and wall tolerances, or a required hardness range, will keep the tube in this phase longer because the mill runs extra passes.
Every order goes through hydrostatic testing, eddy current or ultrasonic testing, dimensional checks, and a full MTC 3.1 traceable to heat number. If your project requires third-party inspection by SGS, BV, TUV, or Lloyd's, that visit is normally folded into this phase. Holding inspection until the last week of the month, when many inspectors are fully booked, can easily add three to five days.
Seaworthy packing, fumigation, certificate of origin, and the booking of a container at the loading port usually take 5 to 7 days. Sea transit to the Middle East runs about 18 to 22 days, to Europe around 28 to 35 days, and to the Americas 30 to 40 days. Air freight is possible for small or urgent orders, but the cost premium means it is usually reserved for sample lots or breakdown spares.
Three actions consistently cut a week or more off a BS 2871 export order without changing the production schedule:
Some applications genuinely need the longer path. A nuclear-grade heat exchanger tube, a subsea umbilical line, or a cryogenic LNG train that has to meet RCC-M, EEMUA 144, or EEMUA 234 will always sit at the upper end of the range, simply because the documentation chain and the audit cadence demand it. EZ Steel Industrial's production system is set up to handle these orders, but buyers should plan for 45 to 60 working days from PO to discharge when the order sits in that category.
For standard plumbing, HVAC, refrigeration, heat efficiency tubes, and general heat-exchanger service, however, the lead times in the table at the top of this article are realistic and achievable on most orders.
To get a firm date rather than a range, send us the following with your inquiry: alloy grade and the BS 2871 part you are referencing, OD and wall thickness with tolerance, ordered length, temper, quantity, destination port, and the inspection regime you require. With that information, our export team at EZ Steel Industrial can give you a confirmed production date, a packing date, and an estimated time of arrival within one working day.
Send your specification to export@ezsteelpipe.com or call +86 731 8870 6116, and we will respond with a full quotation, a confirmed lead time, and the supporting documentation your project team will need to release the order.
