Refineries operate under some of the harshest conditions in the piping industry: high temperature, elevated pressure, hydrogen-saturated streams, sour gas containing hydrogen sulfide, and constant thermal cycling. Every flange joint in a refinery is a potential leak point, and a single failure in a pipe flanges line can shut down a unit for weeks. Choosing the right steel flange solution is therefore not a catalog exercise but an engineering decision driven by the actual service environment of each process unit.
This guide walks through the flange solutions usually recommended for refinery piping, organized by the process units you will actually find in a modern refinery. It is built on the products, standards, and certifications carried by EZ Steel Industrial, a manufacturer that has supplied carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, and copper-nickel piping packages to petrochemical and refinery projects from China since 1994.
In a utility or water line, a flange mainly needs to seal against moderate pressure. In a refinery, the same joint must survive a combination that rarely appears elsewhere:
Before choosing a material, the dimensional and rating framework should be locked down, because flange bolt patterns are not interchangeable across standards. The most common frameworks in international refinery projects are:
Material is the first decision that separates a reliable specification from a problematic one. The table below summarizes the steel families most often recommended for the major refinery units and the logic behind each choice.
After the material, the flange geometry has to match how the joint is fabricated and maintained. For most refinery process lines, three types carry the bulk of the work:
The facing choice follows the pressure class. Raised face (RF) is the everyday default for Class 150–600 joints with spiral-wound gaskets. Ring-type joint (RTJ) is preferred for Class 600 and above in hydrocarbon and hydrogen service, where the metallic ring gasket provides a tighter metal-to-metal seal under high bolt load.
A steel flange is only half of a working joint. The gasket and the stud bolts must be engineered as part of the same specification. Spiral-wound gaskets with graphite filler are the mainstream choice for refinery flanges, while solid metal ring gaskets are required for RTJ facings. On the bolting side, A193 B7 stud bolts with A194 2H nuts are the carbon-steel default, B8/B8M for stainless joints, and B16 for higher-temperature service. Ordering the flange, gasket, and bolting from a single supplier on one heat can eliminate the fit-up surprises that appear when each component comes from a different vendor.
Refinery flanges are pressure-safety items, and the paperwork is as important as the metal. A responsible specification should require material test certificates with heat-number traceability, positive material identification (PMI) verification for alloy and stainless grades, ultrasonic or magnetic particle examination where specified, and — for sour service — a clear NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 compliance statement. A manufacturer that runs more than a dozen inspection checkpoints, holds ISO 9001 certification, and can supply forged flanges to ASTM, ASME, API, EN, and ISO standards is well positioned to deliver this documentation consistently.
For a materials package that covers hydroprocessing, distillation, and utility systems, it is usually more efficient to work with one manufacturer that can supply the complete joint — steel flanges, matching gaskets, stud bolts and nuts, and the connected pipework — on a coordinated mill test certificate and shipping schedule. EZ Steel Industrial supports refinery and petrochemical facilities with carbon steel, alloy steel, and stainless steel flange lines, backed by 12+ quality checkpoints, API 5L and 5CT product certification, PED compliance, and a 480,000-plus annual production capacity.
