When a refinery runs crude through a distillation column, or a power plant pushes superheated steam toward a turbine, the piping in between is doing a job most people never think about. It has to hold pressure, resist heat, and keep doing both for decades. That is exactly the service that A106 A106M steel pipe was designed for, and why it remains one of the most specified materials in high-temperature industrial piping.
ASTM A106/A106M is the standard specification for seamless carbon steel pipe for high-temperature service. It covers sizes from NPS 1/8 to NPS 48 (DN 6 to DN 1200) and defines three grades — A, B, and C — with increasing tensile strength. The pipe is produced by seamless hot-working, with no welding allowed, which is the key to its performance in demanding service.
The most important reason engineers choose A106 over welded alternatives is the absence of a longitudinal weld seam. A weld seam is a potential weak point — a place where the material structure changes and where defects can hide. A seamless pipe is pierced from a solid billet and rolled into shape, giving it a uniform metallurgical structure around the entire circumference. That uniformity translates into higher allowable operating pressures and better resistance to mechanical stress, which matters when a line is carrying hot hydrocarbons or high-pressure steam.
ASTM A106 defines three grades so that engineers can match the material to the job:
Refineries are environments of extremes. Process lines carry volatile hydrocarbons, hot process fluids, and steam at high pressure, and the piping must stay structurally sound through temperature swings and pressure surges. Grade B’s combination of tensile strength and ductility makes it the default choice for process piping, and its weldability means it can be joined to flanges, valves, and fittings without compromising the heat-affected zone. For petrochemical facilities where reliability is non-negotiable, A106 is the material engineers return to again and again.
In power generation, the transport of superheated steam is mission-critical. A106 is used for main steam lines, boiler headers, and feedwater systems, where long-term exposure to elevated temperature makes creep resistance essential. The seamless structure and controlled chemistry help the pipe hold its integrity over the lifecycle of the plant, reducing downtime and maintenance. Whether the plant runs on fossil fuel or biomass, the pressure tubes that carry that steam have to be dependable — and A106 has a long track record of being exactly that.
A106 pipe is only as good as the testing behind it. The standard requires hydrostatic testing of each pipe unless replaced by non-destructive examination, plus tensile and bend tests, and flattening tests for larger sizes. Every pipe must be marked with the manufacturer’s name, grade, size, heat number, and standard number, and shipments should be backed by mill test reports confirming chemical composition and mechanical properties. When a project is built to run for decades, that traceability is not paperwork — it is peace of mind.
When ordering, be precise. Specify the quantity, dimensions (NPS and schedule or wall thickness), grade, end finish (plain, beveled, or threaded), test report requirements, and any special requirements such as hydrostatic testing or non-destructive examination. Getting these details right at the ordering stage avoids costly surprises later in the project.
EZ Steel Industrial Co., Ltd. has been manufacturing and supplying industrial metal piping since 1994, with more than 500 employees and a production network across three locations. Its A106 A106M steel pipe range covers the full scope of the standard, backed by ISO 9001 quality management, API certification, and more than 12 quality checkpoints including hydrostatic testing, ultrasonic testing, and positive material identification. Whether the project is a refinery expansion or a power plants & aerospace application, the company supplies not just pipe but the fittings, flanges, and technical documentation to go with it.
For refineries and power plants, the choice of piping is a safety and longevity decision. ASTM A106/A106M seamless carbon steel pipe has earned its place as the industry standard for high-temperature service — and with the right supplier, specifying it is straightforward.
