Boilers and superheaters are among the most punishing service environments in any industrial plant. Tubes in the furnace wall, the convection bank, and the final superheater stage are continuously exposed to internal steam pressure, external fire-side heat, and thermal cycling between cold start-up and full load. Selecting the wrong steel for these tubes means frequent leaks, forced outages, and expensive retubing. That is why ASTM A210 / A210M seamless medium-carbon steel tubes have remained a workhorse specification for decades: they deliver the strength, ductility, and weldability needed for boiler tubes, boiler flues, safe ends, arch tubes, stay tubes, and superheater tubes in a single, well-understood standard.
At EZ Steel Industrial, we supply A210 and A210M tubes as part of our broader carbon and carbon alloy steel pressure tube portfolio. This guide explains what the standard covers, the difference between Grade A-1 and Grade C, the mechanical and chemical limits you should specify, and the practical reasons engineers keep choosing A210 for new builds, retrofits, and replacement campaigns.
ASTM A210 / A210M is titled "Standard Specification for Seamless Medium-Carbon Steel Boiler and Superheater Tubes." The scope is intentionally narrow but covers exactly the components most plants need to replace or specify on a daily basis:
The standard applies to tubing in outside diameters from 1/2 in. (12.7 mm) to 5 in. (127 mm) and minimum wall thickness from 0.035 in. (0.9 mm) to 0.500 in. (12.7 mm). Tubes outside this dimensional envelope can still be supplied under A210, provided they comply with all the other requirements of the specification. The "M" designation (A210M) simply indicates that metric SI units are the controlling values; both inch-pound and SI versions are published and must be used independently — never combined.
The material is killed steel, made by the seamless process, and can be ordered as either hot-finished or cold-finished. The surface condition — typically oil-dipped, varnished, passivated, phosphated, or shot-blasted — must be specified in the order. A210 also ties back to ASTM A450 / A450M for general testing requirements, which is why every shipment arrives with a mill test certificate (MTC) issued to EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2.
The standard defines only two grades — A-1 and C — but the difference between them is significant. Both share the same silicon floor, the same phosphorus and sulfur ceilings, and the same minimum elongation, but Grade C allows more carbon and a wider, higher manganese range. That chemistry shift is what pushes tensile strength from 415 MPa up to 485 MPa and yield strength from 255 MPa to 275 MPa.
| Property / Element | Grade A-1 | Grade C |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon (max) | 0.27% | 0.35% |
| Manganese | 0.93% max | 0.29% – 1.06% |
| Silicon (min) | 0.10% | 0.10% |
| Phosphorus (max) | 0.035% | 0.035% |
| Sulfur (max) | 0.035% | 0.035% |
| Tensile Strength (min) | 415 MPa (60,000 psi) | 485 MPa (70,000 psi) |
| Yield Strength (min) | 255 MPa (37,000 psi) | 275 MPa (40,000 psi) |
| Elongation (min, 2 in.) | 30% | 30% |
In practice, Grade A-1 is the everyday choice for water-wall tubes, convection bank tubes, and economizer inlets where the design temperature and pressure are moderate. Grade C is reserved for the higher-temperature end of the boiler — secondary superheaters, reheat sections, and high-pressure steam lines where the additional 70 MPa of tensile strength and the higher allowable stress directly translate into thinner walls, lighter supports, and better creep margin.
A word of caution on the flattening test for Grade C: cracks or breaks at the 12 or 6 o'clock position on tubes 2.375 in. (60.3 mm) OD and smaller are not grounds for rejection. If your fabrication procedure relies on a perfectly flat test coupon, flag that in the purchase order.
There is no shortage of tube specifications in the pressure-vessel world — A179, A192, A213, A335, EN 10216-2, JIS G3461, GB/T 5310 — but A210 keeps coming back into specifications for three practical reasons.
Medium-carbon steel with 0.10% min silicon is the sweet spot for tubes that have to be bent, swaged, beaded, expanded, and welded in the field. A210 Grade A-1 can be cold-formed into tight U-bends for economizer and superheater panels without cracking, and both grades can be welded using standard SMAW, GTAW, and GMAW procedures with matching filler metals. For fabricators comparing A210 with A192 high-pressure boiler tubes and A179 heat-exchanger and condenser tubes, A210 is usually the step up when the application moves from low-pressure water/steam service into true boiler and superheater service.
A210 tubes are explicitly rated for the temperature and pressure band where most utility, process, and package boilers operate. The minimum wall thickness requirement, combined with the tensile and yield strength targets, gives boiler designers a known set of allowable stresses at the metal temperatures of furnace walls, pendant superheaters, and platen superheaters. Compared with general-purpose high-pressure carbon and alloy steel pipe used for process piping, A210 tubing is dimensionally tighter, surface-finish is more strictly controlled, and every tube is hydrostatically or nondestructively tested before shipment.
Because A210 is one of the oldest and most widely produced boiler tube specifications in the world, mills can deliver it in standard sizes on short lead times, with full EN 10204 3.1 / 3.2 certification, heat-number traceability, and PMI verification on request. That supply predictability is a hidden but real cost saver on turnaround projects, where the schedule — not the metallurgy — usually decides which tube you actually receive.
Most ordering errors on A210 tubes come from leaving tolerances vague. The standard itself gives different OD and wall tolerances for hot-rolled and cold-drawn tubes, and the purchaser has to choose which one applies. The most commonly used limits are summarized below.
For hot-rolled tubes, OD ≤ 101.6 mm carries a -0.5% tolerance, and 101.6 mm < OD ≤ 127 mm carries approximately -0.33%. For cold-drawn tubes, the tolerance tightens to ±0.10 mm for OD under 25.4 mm and steps out in 0.05 mm increments up to ±0.38 mm for OD between 76.2 and 101.6 mm. Cold-drawn is the right choice when the tube will be expanded into a tube sheet or rolled into a panel.
Hot-rolled wall tolerance is always on the plus side, ranging from +40% / -0% on thin walls down to +28% / -0% on walls above 4.6 mm. Cold-drawn is tighter at +20% / -0% for OD ≤ 38.1 mm and +22% / -0% above that. Because the standard permits no negative wall tolerance, you should always specify a minimum wall — never a nominal wall — in the purchase order.
Standard cut lengths up to 24 ft (7.3 m) carry a +3/16 in. (5 mm) over / 0 under tolerance. For longer tubes the over-tolerance increases by 1/8 in. (3 mm) for each additional 10 ft (3 m), or 1/2 in. (13 mm) total, whichever is less. Straightness is 1:1000 (0.001 in./in.) for both hot-rolled and cold-drawn tubes — important when the tube will be installed in a pendant superheater or a tightly spaced convection bank.
If you need tubes that fall outside the standard dimensional envelope — for example, large-diameter boiler drums or downcomers — you will usually move from A210 tubing into the ASTM A106 / A106M seamless pipe family, which is what EZ Steel Industrial supplies for the high-temperature, high-pressure pipe side of the same plant.
Every A210 tube we ship is subjected to the standard test battery required by ASTM A210 and referenced by A450 / A450M. The base package covers:
For critical service, we recommend adding the following to the purchase order:
A210 tubes are delivered in the annealed, normalized, or normalized-and-tempered condition. The choice depends on the fabrication route: annealed material is the softest and easiest to bend into U-tubes; normalized material gives a finer grain and is generally preferred for superheater panels that will see the highest metal temperatures. As-shipped surface treatments include oil-dip, varnish, passivation, phosphating, and shot-blasting, and each end of every bundle is labeled with the order number, heat number, dimensions, weight, and bundle number to maintain full traceability through storage and installation.
On site, A210 tubes should be stored under cover on wooden dunnage, kept off the ground, and protected from standing water. The standard phosphate or oil coating is sufficient for short-term outdoor storage; for long-term storage, request an additional VCI (vapor corrosion inhibitor) wrap or a desiccant inside the end caps.
A210 does not exist in isolation. Most projects let you choose between several equivalent or near-equivalent standards, and the right pick usually depends on which national system the rest of the plant is designed to. EZ Steel Industrial supplies the full set side by side, so engineers can optimize for material availability without compromising on the specification.
| ASTM A210 | EN | JIS | GB/T | DIN |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A-1 / C | EN 10216-2 (P235GH / P265GH family) | JIS G3461 (STB340 / STB410) | GB/T 5310 (20G / 20MnG) | DIN 17175 (St 35.8 / St 45.8) |
In other words, A210 Grade A-1 is roughly the U.S. equivalent of EN 10216-2 P235GH and JIS G3461 STB340, while A210 Grade C lines up with P265GH and STB410. For international projects, dual-certification to ASTM and EN is common, and EZ Steel Industrial routinely supplies both certifications on the same heat of steel.
A210 / A210M is not the right answer for every high-temperature service. Above about 540 °C (1000 °F) metal temperature, or where creep dominates the design, you typically step up to the ferritic alloy family — ASTM A335 P11 / P22 / P91 / P92 — or to the austenitic stainless family under ASTM A213 for the highest-temperature superheater and reheater sections. But for the majority of utility, industrial, waste-heat, HRSG, and package boilers, A210 Grade A-1 and Grade C are still the most cost-effective way to get reliable, code-compliant boiler and superheater tubing.
Typical applications where EZ Steel Industrial ships A210 on a regular basis include:
A210 tubes are also frequently combined with EZ Steel's heat efficiency tubes — including finned tubes and U-bend tubes — to build complete boiler panels and heat-recovery sections from a single source. That integration matters on EPC and turnaround projects where multiple tube specifications have to arrive on the same barge, in the same heat, with the same documentation package.
To get the right tube on the first shipment, every A210 purchase order should specify, at minimum, the following items. Anything left off the order becomes a default that may not match your fabrication procedure.
When the boiler is being built to ISO recommendations, ASTM A520 shall supplement and supersede the A210 requirements — flag that in the RFQ so the mill runs the correct test matrix.
EZ Steel Industrial was founded in 1994 and has grown into an integrated manufacturer and supplier of industrial metal piping systems, with more than 500 employees and an annual production capacity above 480,000 units. Our three manufacturing locations — Cangzhou for alloy steel and custom fittings, Yangzhou for large-scale carbon and alloy steel pipe, and Lishui for stainless and copper-nickel corrosion-resistant materials — give us the flexibility to roll A210 tubes in standard sizes or to cut, bevel, swage, and heat-treat them to your isometric drawing before shipment.
Every A210 shipment leaves our facility with mill test certification to EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request), full dimensional inspection, hydrostatic or NDT verification, optional PMI, and a documented quality plan aligned with ISO 9001. We support EPC contractors, power plant operators, petrochemical facilities, and equipment manufacturers with bundled supply of pipe fittings, pipe flanges, gaskets, stud bolts and nuts, and industrial valves to match the tubes, so a single PO covers an entire boiler tubing package.
