Most valve problems on a project start long before the valve is installed. They start at the desk where someone picked the wrong body, the wrong end connection, or the wrong partner for the line pipe it sits in. This guide is written for the people who sit at that desk.
The most common mistake we see in cross-border RFQs is the buyer who opens a valve catalog, scrolls to a familiar model and writes it into the datasheet. The valve that came out of the catalog might be perfect for clean, dry air at ambient temperature — and completely wrong for a 425 °C steam line or a 6 % NaCl seawater service.
Before any model number, you should be able to answer four questions on a single line of your specification sheet:
Once those four numbers are written down, half of the catalog disappears on its own, and the remaining shortlist is much easier to defend in front of an engineer, an inspector or an end client.
Our industrial valves range covers the seven families that appear on the vast majority of oil & gas, power, petrochemical, marine and water projects. They are not interchangeable, and the wrong one is the single most expensive line item to replace after commissioning.
A gate valve is built to be either fully open or fully closed. It is the right pick for an isolation duty in a long pipeline where pressure drop across the valve in the open position has to stay low. It is the wrong pick anywhere you need to throttle flow, because partial-open operation will erode the seat and cause leakage within a few cycles.
Globe valves are the workhorses for throttling and for tight shut-off on steam, feedwater and process lines. The straight, tortuous flow path gives accurate control at the cost of a higher pressure drop, which is why globe valves cluster around control stations, bypass lines and warm-up lines rather than on trunk mains.
Ball valves give you quarter-turn operation, low torque and a very compact face-to-face. Soft-seated ball valves cover most clean services, while metal-seated and double-block-and-bleed configurations handle hydrocarbons, gases and the higher pressure classes seen in API 6D pipelines.
For large-diameter lines — typically DN 300 and above — a butterfly valve weighs a fraction of an equivalent ball or gate valve and is significantly cheaper to install. Concentric designs cover water and HVAC; double and triple eccentric designs cover oil & gas and high-temperature duties where a soft seat would not survive.
Check valves exist to protect equipment, not to isolate lines. Swing, lift, dual-plate and nozzle-type check valves each have a defined place: pump discharge, compressor discharge, hot recirculation loops and lines subject to flow reversal on pump trip.
Plug valves are a strong choice for slurries, crude oil and intermittent service where full-bore flow and quick shut-off are both required. Lubricated and sleeved plug valves extend that capability into chemical and abrasive services.
Y-strainers and basket strainers protect the rest of the line from weld slag, scale and debris. Safety and relief valves are not optional: they are a code requirement on any pressure-containing system, and their set pressure has to be matched to the design pressure of the piping system, not the pump discharge pressure.
An industrial valve in a real line is connected to a pipe on each side, through a flange, with a gasket and a set of stud bolts holding the whole thing together. If any one of those four parts is mismatched, the joint will leak — and a leaking joint is the single most common root cause of unplanned shutdowns on process plants.
| Service | Typical Line Pipe | Matching Flange Family | Matching Gasket & Stud |
|---|---|---|---|
| General process, low to mid pressure | Carbon steel pipe (ASTM A106, A53) | Carbon / alloy steel flanges, ASME B16.5 Class 150–300 | Spiral-wound gasket, ASTM A193 B7 studs with A194 2H nuts |
| High-temperature steam, boiler feed | Alloy steel pipe (ASTM A335 P11/P22/P91) | Alloy steel flanges, Class 300–600 | Graphite- or mica-filled spiral wound, B16 studs matched to flange material |
| Corrosive chemical, hygienic | Stainless steel pipe (ASTM A312, A269) | Stainless or duplex flanges | PTFE or flexible graphite, B8/B8M studs to avoid galvanic corrosion |
| Seawater, firewater, marine cooling | Copper-nickel pipe (90/10 or 70/30 Cu-Ni) | Copper-nickel flanges (EEMUA 234) | Compressed non-asbestos or PTFE, B8M studs with anti-seize |
The point of this table is not to memorize four rows. The point is that the valve, the pipe, the flange and the joint have to be specified as a single system, with the same corrosion allowance, the same temperature limit and the same traceability chain. This is the part of a project that is easy to get wrong in a hurry and expensive to fix after hydrotest.
From thirty years of supplying valves, pipes and flanges to projects in oil & gas, power and marine, three mistakes come back again and again.
EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL manufactures and supplies eight product families under one quality system: carbon and stainless steel, copper-nickel alloy, heat efficiency tubes, pipe fittings, pipe flanges, gaskets, stud bolts and nuts, and industrial valves. ISO 9001 lab, API, EN and ASME compliance, and a 480,000-ton annual capacity mean that when the datasheet changes mid-project, the change is contained inside one supply chain instead of four.
That is also why we tend to win on the harder projects: refinery and petrochemical turnarounds, seawater cooling retrofits, boiler feed upgrades, and cross-border bundles where the buyer does not want to chase three different MTC formats. The valve, the line pipe and the joint arrive together, with one set of certificates, one packing list, and one point of accountability.
If you have a valve, pipe or flange datasheet that you want a second pair of eyes on, send it to our engineering team. We will review the service envelope, the body and the joint together and come back with a specification that holds up at hydrotest, at site and at audit. Visit EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL to get started.
